Epson XP-15000 DTF Conversion: Can You Perform the Initial Setup With DTF Ink in Empty Cartridges?

I have a brand-new Epson XP-15000 that has never been initialized or used. I purchased empty refillable cartridges and plan to convert the printer for DTF printing using the six-step process, including relocating the CSIC board, waterproofing the printhead, and removing the star wheels.
Can I complete the printer's first-time setup using DTF ink in the empty cartridges, or must I install the original Epson cartridges for the initial ink-charging process?

Once the Epson XP-15000 has been successfully converted to chipless firmware, the printer generally no longer relies on the cartridge chips to determine whether the installed cartridges are original Epson cartridges, compatible cartridges, or refillable empty cartridges. Therefore, you can usually perform the initial ink setup using refillable cartridges filled with DTF ink. You do not necessarily need to initialize the printer with the original Epson cartridges first.
However, several important conditions must be considered before beginning the initial ink charge.
Complete the Chipless Conversion Before Installing the Cartridges
The chipless firmware installation should be completed before you attempt the initial cartridge setup. If the printer is still operating with its original firmware, it may reject the refillable cartridges because their chips are missing, incompatible, unrecognized, or not properly initialized.
After a successful chipless conversion, the printer should stop monitoring the individual cartridge chips in the normal way. It will generally display the ink levels as full or otherwise bypass the original cartridge-recognition system.
This is why, after the chipless conversion is active, the printer typically does not care whether you use:

The XP-15000 uses six cartridge positions. A standard printer configuration normally includes:

Because the printer is new and has never been charged with OEM ink, beginning with DTF ink has one advantage: you avoid mixing the original dye-based Epson ink with the DTF pigment ink. This can reduce the amount of flushing required during the conversion.
Understand the Risk of Using White DTF Ink During Initial Charging
White DTF ink requires considerably more maintenance than standard desktop-printer ink. It contains heavy pigment that can settle quickly and may clog cartridges, dampers, ink ports, or printhead nozzles.
Before filling or installing white ink cartridges:

Shake or agitate the white ink according to the ink manufacturer's instructions.

Make sure the ink is fully mixed without creating excessive foam.

Do not use ink containing hardened sediment or large particles.

Keep the ink containers and filling tools clean.

The Initial Ink Charge Uses a Significant Amount of Ink
During the first startup, the XP-15000 performs an initial ink-charging process. This process fills the internal ink path, dampers, and printhead. It may consume a substantial amount of ink from each cartridge.
Make sure the refillable cartridges are adequately filled before starting. If a cartridge runs empty during the initial charge, the printer may pull air into that channel. Removing a large airlock afterward can require additional cleaning cycles, manual priming, or printhead maintenance.
It is also important not to interrupt the initial charge. Do not unplug the printer, remove the cartridges, or turn off the power while the charging process is underway unless the printer displays a specific error requiring intervention.
Confirm That the Printer Recognizes the Chipless Firmware
Before starting the ink charge, verify that the chipless firmware activation was successful. Depending on the firmware package, the printer may show full ink levels, bypass cartridge-chip errors, or behave differently from a stock XP-15000.
If the printer displays errors such as "Ink Cartridge Not Recognized," "Replace Cartridge," or another cartridge-related warning, the chipless conversion may not have been completed correctly, the activation key may not have been applied, or the firmware may not match the printer's current firmware version.
Do not repeatedly remove and reinstall cartridges while the printer is powered on. Cartridge handling should be performed carefully to reduce the risk of damaging the CSIC contacts, cartridge carriage, or relocated CSIC wiring.
Consider the Printhead Waterproofing Step
DTF conversions involve greater risk of ink leakage and moisture exposure than normal desktop printing. White ink and cleaning fluid can reach the printhead cable connections, especially during manual flushing, cartridge changes, or printhead maintenance.
Waterproofing the printhead area is intended to reduce the chance that liquid will contact the flat flexible cables or electrical terminals. However, waterproofing does not make the printhead completely immune to liquid damage.
Always avoid allowing ink or cleaning solution to contact:

Mainboard connectors

Carriage electrical contacts
Liquid on these components can cause short circuits, printhead errors, blown fuses, or permanent mainboard damage.
Remove the Star Wheels Before Printing DTF Film
Removing or modifying the star wheels is normally done to prevent the small exit rollers from touching wet DTF ink on the film. If the star wheels remain in contact with freshly printed ink, they may leave tracks, dots, scratches, or repeated marks across the printed design.
This modification is important for print quality, but it does not directly affect whether you can perform the initial ink setup with DTF ink. The printer can generally complete its ink charge before or after the star-wheel modification, provided the conversion work has been performed correctly.
Recommended Startup Procedure
For a new XP-15000 that has never been initialized, the general sequence is:

If a color is completely missing after the initial charge, inspect the cartridge, vent, outlet, and ink flow before performing numerous cleaning cycles.
