Epson WorkForce Pro WF-3820 Not Printing Cyan: How to Fix Pink or Incorrect Colors After Changing Ink Cartridges

I have an Epson WorkForce Pro WF-3820 and recently performed a firmware rollback so I could continue using non-Epson ink cartridges. The printer now recognizes the cartridges, and black, magenta, and yellow appear to be working, but cyan is not printing correctly.

When I print something that should be blue, there is a little blue near the top of the letters, but the lower portions turn pink or magenta. I have already run a nozzle check, performed a printhead cleaning, and replaced the cyan cartridge, but the problem remains. What else should I check or try?

From your description, I would concentrate primarily on the cyan ink-delivery system and cyan section of the printhead, rather than on the firmware itself.

The fact that you can see blue at the beginning of the printed words but the color later turns pink is particularly useful information. Blue is normally produced by combining cyan and magenta. If cyan stops firing while magenta continues printing, the remaining color will appear magenta, pink, or reddish-purple. In other words, the printer may begin the print job with some cyan available and then lose cyan as printing continues.

That behavior can be caused by several different problems.

1. Look Very Carefully at the Cyan Section of the Nozzle Check

The nozzle check is the most important diagnostic test in this situation because it separates an ink-delivery problem from a software or color-setting problem.

Print another nozzle check and look specifically at the cyan pattern.

If the cyan section contains many missing lines, prints very faintly, or is completely absent, then the problem exists inside the printer's cyan ink path or printhead. Changing printer drivers, color settings, applications, or ICC profiles is unlikely to correct it.

If cyan initially looks reasonably complete on a nozzle check but disappears after printing for a while, that suggests the printhead may be consuming cyan faster than the cartridge or ink path can replenish it. This can happen because of restricted ink flow, a poorly vented cartridge, a cartridge outlet problem, air entering the ink path, or another ink-delivery issue.

2. Do Not Assume the Replacement Cyan Cartridge Is Good

Possible causes include a cartridge that cannot vent properly, an obstruction at the cartridge ink outlet, air in the cyan ink path, poor cartridge seating, or a restriction farther downstream.

One useful diagnostic observation is whether the cyan nozzle check changes depending on how much the printer has recently printed. For example, if cyan looks better after the printer has been sitting for several hours but disappears again after printing several pages, restricted ink replenishment becomes much more likely.

4. Avoid Running Cleaning Cycle After Cleaning Cycle

Printhead cleaning is appropriate when the nozzle check has gaps, but repeated cleaning cycles are not necessarily better.

Cleaning consumes ink and sends that ink into the maintenance system. If the cyan problem is caused by a cartridge that cannot supply ink properly, repeatedly running cleaning cycles may not solve the underlying restriction.

Therefore, if you have already performed several cleanings without meaningful improvement, I would stop repeating them continuously. Give the printer time to sit and then perform another nozzle check before deciding what to do next.

5. Determine Whether Cyan Is Completely Missing or Only Partially Missing

There is an important diagnostic difference between these two conditions.

If cyan is completely absent, I would be more suspicious of the cartridge, ink supply connection, a severely blocked cyan channel, or a printhead-related failure.

If some cyan lines are present but many are missing, clogged cyan nozzles become more likely.

If cyan starts good but progressively disappears, ink starvation or restricted ink delivery moves higher on the list.

If the cyan nozzle check is perfect but blue documents still print pink, then the physical ink system is probably not your first suspect. In that case, test a simple image directly from another application or computer and check that no unusual color correction, grayscale mode, custom ICC profile, or application-specific color setting is active.

A nozzle check generated directly by the printer is particularly valuable because it does not depend on the computer's application color settings.

6. The Firmware Rollback and Cyan Problem May Be Separate Issues

7. If the Nozzle Check Never Recovers, the Cyan Section of the Printhead May Be Involved

If you have tested more than one cyan cartridge, confirmed proper cartridge installation, allowed the printer to rest between reasonable cleaning attempts, and cyan remains substantially or completely absent on the printer's own nozzle check, then the problem may be farther downstream.

At that point, possible causes include a persistent obstruction in the cyan ink path, contamination or dried pigment in the cyan nozzles, poor ink delivery to the head, or an internal printhead problem.

There is also a difference between a hydraulic problem and an electrical printhead problem. With a hydraulic problem, the cyan nozzles may be capable of firing but simply are not receiving enough ink. With an electrical failure, part or all of the cyan nozzle array may no longer fire correctly even when ink is physically present.

Unfortunately, those two conditions can look very similar from the printed page, which is why a careful progression of tests is more useful than replacing parts immediately.

8. Use the Pattern of Failure to Decide What to Investigate Next

Based specifically on the symptom you described, I would approach it in this order:

  1. Print a fresh nozzle check and examine only the cyan pattern.

  2. If cyan is missing, remove and carefully inspect the cyan cartridge installation.

  3. Make sure the correct protective tape was removed and the cartridge is fully seated.

  4. If possible, test another known-good cyan cartridge, preferably not from the same package or batch.

  5. Avoid performing many consecutive printhead cleanings.

  6. After the printer has rested, run another nozzle check.

  7. Compare whether cyan is stronger immediately after resting and then becomes weaker after printing.

  8. If cyan remains missing even with another cartridge and reasonable cleaning attempts, an internal ink-delivery or printhead problem becomes increasingly likely.

  9. If the nozzle check is completely correct but ordinary documents still show pink instead of blue, move your diagnosis away from the ink system and toward the driver, application, and color settings.
