Epson WF-7710 or WF-7720 Printing Blank Pages After T1881/T252 Printhead Replacement

I followed the printhead replacement instructions and installed a new Epson T1881/T252-compatible printhead in my WorkForce WF-7710. The replacement printhead looks identical to the original, and the installation appeared to go correctly. However, every page now comes out completely blank. I have already performed four printhead-cleaning cycles, but there is still no ink on the paper. What should I check next?

When an Epson WorkForce WF-7710, WF-7720, WF-7110, WF-7610, WF-7620, WF-3620, or WF-3640 begins producing completely blank pages immediately after a T1881/T252-family printhead replacement, the problem usually falls into one of three categories:

  1. Ink is not reaching the printhead.

  2. The printhead is not receiving electrical signals.

  3. The replacement printhead is defective or not fully compatible.

Because you have already completed four cleaning cycles without any visible improvement, we do not recommend continuing to run repeated cleanings until several other items have been checked. Additional cleaning cycles can consume a large amount of ink, fill the waste-ink system, and still accomplish nothing when the actual problem is an electrical connection, failed pump, poor capping-station seal, or incompatible printhead.

Determine Whether All Colors Are Completely Blank

The first important distinction is whether the nozzle check is entirely blank or whether only one or two colors are missing.

If every color is completely absent, including black, cyan, magenta, and yellow, the problem is less likely to be four separate clogged ink channels. A completely blank nozzle check usually points toward a common issue affecting the entire printhead, such as:

  • No ink being drawn into the printhead

  • Air trapped throughout the ink-delivery system

  • A capping station or pump that cannot create suction

  • A disconnected or improperly seated printhead cable

  • A blown printhead fuse on the mainboard

  • A defective or incompatible replacement printhead

If some colors print while others remain blank, the issue is more likely related to individual cartridge vents, blocked ink inlets, air in specific channels, internal clogs, or damage to particular nozzle sections.

Check the Ink Cartridges and Ink Supply

Begin by confirming that the printer recognizes every cartridge and does not display an ink-cartridge warning. Remove and reinstall each cartridge, making sure it locks completely into position.

Check the following:

  • All required protective seals and shipping tape have been removed.

  • The cartridge air vents are open and unobstructed.

  • The cartridges contain enough ink.

  • No cartridge outlet seal, rubber plug, or packaging material is blocking ink flow.

  • The cartridge contacts are clean and dry.

  • Each cartridge is installed in the correct color position.

  • Refillable cartridges have been properly vented.

A cartridge may be recognized electronically while still failing to deliver ink mechanically. This is especially common with refillable cartridges when the air vent remains closed. Without incoming air, the cartridge can develop a vacuum and stop supplying ink.

If compatible or refillable cartridges are being used, temporarily testing with a known-good cartridge set may help determine whether the problem is related to the new printhead or the ink supply.

The New Printhead May Not Be Primed

A replacement printhead may arrive dry or partially filled with shipping fluid. Normal cleaning cycles sometimes cannot remove a large air pocket from a newly installed head, particularly if the ink channels were emptied during the replacement.

A regular cleaning cycle is designed mainly for maintaining an already primed printhead. It may not provide enough suction to fill an entirely empty head.

After printhead replacement, a service-level ink charge or power-cleaning operation may be necessary. Use this function only if it is officially available for the model or performed with the appropriate Epson service procedure. Do not repeatedly initiate power cleanings because each cycle uses a substantial amount of ink and sends that ink into the waste-ink system.

After a limited number of cleaning attempts, allowing the printer to remain powered off for several hours can sometimes help trapped air settle and allow ink to migrate toward the nozzles. However, waiting will not correct an electrical connection problem or a pump that is unable to create suction.

Inspect the Capping Station and Waste-Ink Pump

The capping station is the rubber sealing assembly where the printhead rests when parked. During a cleaning cycle, the cap seals against the bottom of the printhead while the waste-ink pump creates suction.

If the cap does not seal against the new printhead, no ink will be pulled through the nozzles. Possible causes include:

  • The capping station is dirty or misaligned.

  • The rubber cap is deformed or damaged.

  • Dried ink prevents the cap from sealing.

  • The pump tube is disconnected, pinched, or clogged.

  • The waste-ink pump is not turning.

  • The printhead carriage is not parking at the correct height.

  • The replacement printhead sits slightly differently from the original.

During a cleaning cycle, ink should normally move through the waste-ink tube. If no ink enters the waste line, the pump may not be producing suction, the cap may not be sealing, or the ink supply may be blocked.

Do not force cleaning fluid through the printhead with high syringe pressure. Excessive pressure can separate internal membranes, damage nozzle plates, flood the electrical contacts, or push contaminated fluid into areas that must remain dry.

Recheck Every Printhead Ribbon Cable

A loose, reversed, contaminated, or damaged flat-flex cable can cause the printer to move normally while producing completely blank pages.

Turn the printer off and disconnect it from power before touching any printhead cable. Inspect the flat-flex cables for:

  • Incomplete insertion into the connector

  • Incorrect orientation

  • Crooked installation

  • Folded or bent contact ends

  • Torn conductor traces

  • Ink or cleaning solution on the contacts

  • Burn marks or darkened terminals

  • Damaged connector locking tabs

The exposed cable contacts must enter the connector evenly and face the correct direction. A cable can appear installed while being slightly crooked or not inserted deeply enough to make reliable contact.

If ink or cleaning solution reached a cable or connector, do not power the printer on until the area has been cleaned appropriately and dried completely. Moisture around the printhead circuitry can short the printhead, damage the ribbon cables, or blow a fuse on the printer's mainboard.

Check for a Blown Printhead Fuse

The mainboard normally contains one or more protective fuses in the printhead power circuit. If the replacement head, cable, or connector created a short circuit, a fuse may open. The printer may still turn on, move the carriage, feed paper, and complete a print job, but the printhead will not fire any ink.

A completely blank page after replacement, particularly when ink is visibly reaching the head, can indicate this type of electrical failure.

A technician can check the relevant fuse for continuity with the printer unplugged. However, replacing or bridging a fuse without identifying the cause is dangerous. If the printhead or cable is still shorted, the replacement fuse can fail immediately, and bypassing the fuse may cause more serious mainboard damage.

The fuse is a protective component, not usually the original cause of the failure. Before replacing it, inspect the printhead, cables, connectors, and surrounding areas for ink contamination, pinched cables, incorrect cable orientation, or signs of a short circuit.

Verify the Exact Printhead Part Number

Although multiple Epson WorkForce models use printheads that look nearly identical, appearance alone does not guarantee compatibility.

"T1881" and "T252" are commonly used in online listings to describe compatible printhead or cartridge families, but the actual Epson printhead identification, connector configuration, electrical revision, region, and supported printer models must match.

Compare the following between the original and replacement heads:

  • Printed part numbers and revision markings

  • Number and position of ribbon-cable contacts

  • Ink inlet arrangement

  • Mounting points

  • Sensor or grounding contacts

  • Manifold configuration

  • Electrical board layout

A head can physically fit the carriage yet have a different electrical configuration. In that situation, the printer may produce blank pages, display an error, or damage the printhead power circuit.

Contact the seller and provide clear photographs of the identification markings on both the original and replacement printheads. Ask the seller to confirm compatibility with the exact printer model and region-not merely the broader WF-7000 or WF-3000 series.

Consider the Condition of the Replacement Printhead

Some printheads sold as "new" are refurbished, recovered from another printer, or stored for an extended period. A replacement may have clogged internal channels, dried shipping fluid, damaged nozzle electronics, or an internal short circuit.

A defective head can produce either of two confusing conditions:

  • Ink reaches the head, but the nozzles do not fire electrically.

  • The head's internal passages are blocked, so cleaning cycles cannot pull ink through it.

If the original printhead produced at least partial output before replacement and the replacement produces a perfectly blank nozzle check, carefully reinstalling the original head can sometimes help isolate the issue. If the original head prints again, the replacement head is likely defective, incompatible, or improperly prepared.

This comparison should only be attempted when the cables, connectors, and printheads are completely clean and dry. Repeatedly connecting printheads while ink or moisture is present can damage the mainboard.

Avoid Running More Cleaning Cycles for Now

Four cleaning cycles should normally create at least some marks on the nozzle check if the printhead is electrically active, the cartridges are supplying ink, and the capping station is functioning.

Before performing another cleaning cycle, we recommend checking:

  • Ink flow into the printhead

  • The capping-station seal

  • Waste-pump operation

  • Ribbon-cable placement

  • Cable and connector contamination

  • Mainboard fuse continuity

  • The replacement head's exact part number
