Epson WF-2760 Ink Draining During Printhead Cleaning: Refillable Cartridge and Chip Compatibility Explained

I was following your "Secrets of Epson's Printhead Self-Cleaning Unclogging Routine Revealed" video because I got a good deal on an Epson printer, but one color is not printing.
Is it normal for a full ink cartridge to become completely empty while going through the printhead cleaning process? The cartridge for the color that is not printing was full when I started, but now it shows empty and that color still is not printing.
Also, are refillable cartridges available for the Epson WorkForce WF-2760? I would like to reduce my ink costs, but I have read that there can be problems with the cartridge chips. How do refillable cartridges and chips work on this printer?

Is It Normal for a Full Cartridge to Become Empty During Printhead Cleaning?
The short answer is: printhead cleaning definitely consumes ink, but a single normal cleaning cycle should not ordinarily drain a genuinely full cartridge. If you have run many cleaning cycles, however, the printer can consume a surprisingly large amount of ink.
The Epson WF-2760 cleans its printhead by parking the printhead over the capping station and using the maintenance pump to create suction. Ink is pulled through the printhead nozzles and discharged into the printer's waste-ink system. In other words, the ink used for cleaning does not go onto paper-it ends up in the waste-ink pads inside the printer.
Epson specifically notes that printhead cleaning consumes ink and recommends performing cleaning only when print quality has declined. Epson's WF-2760 documentation also recommends that if approximately four rounds of nozzle checks and head cleaning do not improve the print quality, the printer should be allowed to sit for at least six hours before trying again. This is important because repeatedly running cleaning cycles one after another can consume a tremendous amount of ink without necessarily fixing the original problem.
Why Can the Cartridge Become Empty While That Color Still Does Not Print?
This is probably the more important part of your situation.
If the cartridge for the problem color is going from full to empty, but that color still does not appear on the nozzle check, it does not necessarily mean that all of the ink successfully traveled through the nozzles.
Several things could be happening.
1. The printhead channel may still be severely clogged.
Ink can be pulled toward the printhead during cleaning while individual nozzle passages remain blocked. A stubborn dried-pigment clog can prevent the ink from spraying properly even though the cleaning system continues consuming ink.
2. There may be air in the ink channel.
If air has entered between the cartridge and printhead, the pump may struggle to establish a solid column of ink. Repeated cleaning may remove some ink while still leaving enough air in the channel to prevent consistent printing.
This can sometimes happen after the printer has been stored for a long time, operated with an empty cartridge, or had cartridges repeatedly removed and installed.
3. The cartridge may not be delivering ink properly.
The cartridge's outlet, air vent, internal valve, or seal can cause problems. A cartridge can appear normal and still fail to provide a consistent supply of ink to the printhead.
With refillable or compatible cartridges, this becomes especially important because the cartridge design needs to provide both proper ink delivery and proper air pressure.
4. The capping station may not be sealing correctly.
The cleaning pump can only pull ink through the printhead efficiently if the rubber cap underneath the printhead forms a good seal.
If the cap is dirty, dried out, distorted, or not contacting the printhead correctly, the pump may pull mostly air instead of efficiently drawing ink through the clogged nozzles.
The printer may continue performing the cleaning routine and consuming its calculated amount of ink even though the cleaning action is not accomplishing much.
5. The pump or waste-ink system may have a problem.
A weak or partially clogged pump can also make repeated cleaning ineffective. Ink may move through parts of the maintenance system without generating enough suction at the printhead to clear the affected channel.
An "Empty" Reading Does Not Always Mean the Cartridge Is Physically Dry
Another thing to keep in mind is that the printer does not simply look inside the cartridge and physically measure the remaining liquid.
The cartridge chip and printer electronics keep track of ink usage. Therefore, when the printer says a cartridge is empty, that reading represents the printer's calculated ink status. It does not always mean there is literally zero ink remaining inside the cartridge.
This becomes even more important with third-party, refilled, or reset cartridges because the chip's calculated ink level may not correspond perfectly with the actual amount of ink inside the cartridge.
So there are really two separate questions:
Is the cartridge physically empty?
and
Does the printer's chip system consider the cartridge empty?
Those are not always the same thing.
Avoid Running Too Many Cleaning Cycles Consecutively
If you have already performed several cleanings and the nozzle check is not improving, I would not continue running cleaning after cleaning indefinitely.
Besides consuming ink, every cleaning cycle sends additional ink into the waste-ink pads. Eventually, those pads can become saturated, and the printer keeps an internal waste-ink counter that can eventually result in a service-related condition.
A better diagnostic approach is to print a nozzle check between cleaning attempts and compare the patterns.
If the missing color gradually begins appearing-for example, you initially have no cyan and then begin seeing several cyan lines after cleaning-that suggests the cleaning process is accomplishing something.
If you perform several cleanings and the nozzle pattern remains exactly the same, particularly if an entire color remains completely absent, I would start considering something other than an ordinary nozzle clog. Possible causes include an ink-supply problem, cartridge problem, air leak, capping-station problem, pump problem, or a more severe printhead obstruction.
What Ink Cartridges Does the Epson WF-2760 Use?
For the U.S. version of the Epson WorkForce WF-2760, Epson specifies the 220 and 220XL cartridge family.
The standard-capacity cartridges include the 220 Black, Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow cartridges, while 220XL cartridges provide higher capacity. Epson currently lists both 220 and 220XL cartridges as compatible with the WF-2760. (Epson)

If your printer was originally sold outside the United States, verify the cartridge family before purchasing anything because Epson cartridge numbers can differ by region.
Can You Use Refillable Cartridges in an Epson WF-2760?
There have been aftermarket refillable cartridges manufactured for printers using the 220/220XL cartridge format. The difficult part is generally not the plastic cartridge itself-it is the chip.
The WF-2760 needs to recognize an electronic chip on every cartridge. The chip identifies the cartridge to the printer and keeps track of its ink status.
A refillable cartridge therefore normally needs some type of compatible chip, such as an auto-reset chip (ARC) or another resettable/replacement chip system.
With an auto-reset cartridge, you generally refill the physical cartridge and the chip resets its reported ink status according to the chip manufacturer's design. However, the exact resetting behavior varies considerably between cartridge manufacturers.
This is why I would not purchase a refillable cartridge simply because the seller says that it fits a "220" cartridge slot.
The seller should specifically confirm that the chip is compatible with your WF-2760 and the firmware currently installed on your printer.
Why Firmware Can Cause Problems With Refillable Cartridge Chips
This is the issue you were reading about, and your concern is valid.
Epson states that its cartridge printers are designed for Epson cartridges and that firmware updates can affect the functionality of third-party ink cartridges. (Epson Support)
That means an aftermarket cartridge that works with one WF-2760 may not necessarily work on another WF-2760 if the printers have different firmware versions.
This can produce situations where a cartridge physically fits perfectly but the printer reports messages such as:
"Cannot recognize ink cartridge."
"Ink cartridge not recognized."
or a similar cartridge-related warning.
This is generally a chip-recognition problem rather than an ink-flow problem.
If you decide to use refillable cartridges, I would therefore check with the cartridge supplier and specifically ask whether their current chip works with your printer's firmware version. Do not assume that all "WF-2760 compatible" refillable cartridges use the same chip technology.
Firmware also serves legitimate purposes such as bug fixes and printer functionality, so the decision about firmware updates should be made with both printer reliability and aftermarket-cartridge compatibility in mind.
Refillable Cartridge Ink Choice Matters Too
If you do use refillable cartridges, the ink itself is also important.
The WF-2760 was designed around Epson's DURABrite Ultra ink system. Epson lists DURABrite Ultra 220/220XL cartridges for this printer. (Epson)
Using an ink with unsuitable viscosity, surface tension, pigment characteristics, or particle size can create additional flow problems. This is particularly important when trying to recover a printer that already has a clogged color channel.
Changing to a different ink formulation while troubleshooting can make diagnosis harder because you are introducing another variable into the system.
