I have an Epson WF-2661 that started displaying error code 0x4D after I pulled a sheet of paper out of the automatic document feeder because the paper was too thick and became jammed. Is there a way to repair this error? Can I disconnect or disable the ADF and continue using the printer without it?

What Does Epson Error Code 0x4D Mean?
On an Epson WF-2661, error code 0x4D is generally associated with a scanner or document-feeding mechanism that cannot initialize or move correctly. Depending on the exact failure, the printer may detect a blocked scanner mechanism, an ADF sensor problem, a damaged paper-feeding component, or an electrical fault affecting the scanner assembly.
Because the error appeared immediately after thick paper became stuck in the automatic document feeder and was forcibly removed, the most likely area to inspect is the ADF rather than the ink-cartridge carriage.
Pulling a jammed document against the normal paper-travel direction can potentially:

Leave a small piece of paper inside the ADF.

Move or damage a paper-detection sensor flag.

Dislodge a spring connected to a sensor lever.

Damage an ADF pickup or separation roller.

Move a gear out of alignment.

Damage the scanner or ADF wiring.

Prevent the ADF cover from closing completely.

Place excessive force on the document-feeding mechanism.
The WF-2660-series instructions state that the ADF cover should be opened before jammed originals are removed, because pulling paper without opening the cover may damage the product. Epson recommends opening the ADF cover, carefully removing the paper, checking beneath the document cover, and then closing all covers securely.
Turn Off and Reset the Printer
Begin by turning off the printer using the power button. Disconnect the power cord from the wall outlet and leave the printer unplugged for several minutes.
While it is unplugged, press and hold the power button for approximately 15 seconds. This does not repair a mechanical problem, but it may help discharge residual electricity from the printer.
Reconnect the printer directly to a wall outlet and turn it on. Avoid using a power strip during testing. If error 0x4D immediately returns, the printer is probably detecting a physical obstruction, sensor condition, or hardware failure during its startup inspection.
Inspect the ADF for Torn Paper
Remove every document from the ADF input tray. Open the ADF cover fully rather than attempting to pull anything through the closed paper path.
Use a flashlight to inspect the following areas:

The ADF input slot.

The pickup and separation rollers.

The paper path beneath the ADF cover.

The exit area where scanned documents come out.

The area beneath the scanner lid.

The hinges and rear section of the ADF assembly.
Look carefully for small scraps of paper. Even a narrow strip may hold a sensor lever in the wrong position and cause the printer to report an error after the visible jam has been removed.
Remove any loose paper slowly and in the normal direction of travel whenever possible. Do not use a knife, screwdriver, or sharp metal object inside the paper path. A sharp tool can scratch a roller, break a sensor flag, or damage the wiring.
Epson's official jam-clearing procedure also advises users not to touch the ADF paper rollers unnecessarily.
Check the ADF Sensor Flags
Inside the ADF paper path, there are usually small plastic levers or flags that detect the presence and movement of a document. A sheet that is unusually thick can bend one of these flags, push it out of position, or disconnect its return spring.
With the printer unplugged, inspect any visible plastic levers. A normal sensor flag should move with light pressure and return to its original position when released.
Do not force a lever that feels locked. If it does not move or return normally, it may be:

Blocked by a paper fragment.

Bent or broken.

Disconnected from its spring.

Jammed against an ADF gear or roller.

No longer positioned inside its optical sensor.
A damaged sensor flag can make the printer believe that paper is permanently jammed, even when the paper path is empty.
Examine the ADF Rollers and Gears
Turn the accessible ADF rollers gently while the printer is unplugged. They may not rotate freely in both directions because some mechanisms use one-way clutches, but they should not appear severely crooked, detached, or locked by paper debris.
Pay attention to clicking, grinding, or skipping. A thick sheet can place enough resistance on the feeder to damage a small plastic gear or move a gear out of alignment.
If the printer makes a repetitive clicking sound before displaying 0x4D, that may indicate that the ADF motor is attempting to move the mechanism but cannot complete its initialization.
Make Sure Every Cover Is Closed Correctly
Close the ADF cover firmly and verify that it sits evenly on both sides. Then close the scanner lid.
A cover that appears closed may still fail to activate its cover-detection switch. Check for bent hinges, displaced plastic tabs, or a latch that no longer reaches the switch.
You can also remove all documents from the ADF and start the printer with the scanner lid and ADF cover fully closed. Do not place pressure on the lid while the printer is starting.
Check the Flatbed Scanner
Although the problem began with an ADF jam, error code 0x4D may also involve the scanner's initialization process.
With the printer turned off and unplugged, look through the scanner glass and check whether the scanner lamp or scanning carriage appears trapped at one end. Do not attempt to push the scanner carriage through the glass.
If the scanner assembly moves briefly, makes a grinding sound, and then displays the error, possible causes include:

An obstruction in the scanner mechanism.

A scanner motor or drive-belt problem.

A dirty or unreadable scanner position strip.

A disconnected scanner cable.
-
A damaged scanner home-position sensor.
-
Internal damage caused by force transferred through the ADF assembly.
Accessing these components normally requires partial disassembly of the scanner unit.
Do Not Reposition the Ink-Cartridge Carriage for This ADF Problem
The proposed procedure involving manually sliding the ink-cartridge carriage applies to certain carriage-lock or print-mechanism problems. It is not the first procedure we would recommend for an error that appeared directly after an ADF document jam.
The ink-cartridge carriage and the scanner or ADF assembly are separate systems. Moving the printhead carriage is unlikely to correct a damaged ADF sensor, feeder gear, scanner cable, or scanner initialization problem.
Additionally, forcing the printhead carriage while it is mechanically locked at the capping station could damage the carriage belt, locking mechanism, capping station, or printhead assembly.
Can the ADF Be Cut Off or Disabled?
We do not recommend cutting wires or physically cutting the ADF away from the printer.
The ADF is part of the scanner assembly, and its cables may carry motor power, sensor signals, or control signals. Cutting or unplugging those connections may cause additional scanner errors, electrical shorts, or permanent mainboard damage.
The WF-2661 may also check the scanner and ADF circuits during startup. Therefore, simply disconnecting the ADF may not allow the printer to start normally. It may instead produce another scanner-related error because the expected motors or sensors are no longer detected.
There generally is not a normal control-panel setting that completely removes a defective ADF from the printer's startup hardware check. You can choose the scanner glass rather than the ADF when scanning, but that software selection does not necessarily bypass an ADF hardware failure during initialization.
If the ADF is confirmed to be defective, the practical repair options are usually:

Repairing the damaged sensor, lever, roller, gear, or wiring.

Replacing the ADF assembly.

Replacing the complete scanner assembly if the ADF is not available separately.

Replacing the printer if repair costs exceed its value.
Inspect the ADF Cable Connections
If you are comfortable disassembling the printer, inspect the ADF and scanner cable connections only after disconnecting the power cord.
The scanner assembly may contain flat flexible cables and wire harnesses that can be torn or partially disconnected when the ADF is forced or lifted. A partially seated cable can produce a scanner initialization error even when the mechanical jam has been cleared.
Before disconnecting anything, take clear photographs showing the cable orientation and routing. Flat cables must be installed in the correct direction and inserted evenly into their connectors. Installing a cable backward or at an angle can damage the cable or control board.
Do not repeatedly power on the printer if you find a torn cable, exposed conductor, or liquid contamination.
Test the Printer After Each Inspection
After removing any obstruction and confirming that the sensor flags, covers, and rollers appear normal, close the ADF cover and scanner lid. Reconnect the power and test the printer.
Observe what happens before error code 0x4D appears:

Does the scanner lamp turn on?

Does the scanner carriage move?

Does the ADF motor run?
-
Is there a clicking or grinding sound?

Does the error appear immediately?

Does the printer reach the home screen before the error occurs?
These observations can help distinguish an ADF paper-path problem from a scanner motor, cable, sensor, or control-board failure.
If the error occurs immediately without any movement, the problem may involve an electrical connection, sensor signal, or control-board circuit. If the mechanism moves and then stops with noise, a mechanical blockage or damaged drive component becomes more likely.
When Replacement May Be More Practical
The Epson WF-2661 is an older all-in-one printer, so the cost of professional disassembly, diagnosis, and scanner or ADF replacement may be higher than the printer's current replacement value.
Before purchasing parts, identify the damaged component as precisely as possible. Replacing the complete ADF will not solve the problem if the actual failure is in the flatbed scanner, cable harness, or mainboard. Likewise, replacing a mainboard will not solve a bent sensor flag or broken ADF gear.
