Epson SureColor F570 Printing Blank Pages: How to Diagnose Clogged or Damaged Printhead Nozzles

I have an Epson SureColor F570 that is printing completely blank pages. I have already tried Power Cleaning and other cleaning procedures, but nothing has helped. Could the printhead nozzles be damaged, and if so, how can damaged nozzles be fixed?

In your case, the fact that the Epson SureColor F570 is producing completely blank pages even after Power Cleaning is an important clue. This is different from a normal nozzle clog where only a few lines or colors are missing.

The F570 uses an Epson PrecisionCore MicroTFP printhead with four ink channels. Epson also incorporates nozzle-verification technology into this printer. (Epson) If the printer is producing absolutely nothing on the nozzle check-not even a small amount of cyan, magenta, yellow, or black-the problem may involve more than several clogged nozzles.

First, Determine Whether the Nozzles Are Actually Damaged

The term "damaged nozzle" can describe several different conditions.

A nozzle can simply be clogged with dried ink. In that situation, the nozzle itself may still be physically and electrically functional, but ink cannot pass through it.

A printhead can also suffer from air in the ink-delivery system, preventing ink from reaching the printhead. If the head does not have a sufficient supply of ink, cleaning cycles will not necessarily solve the problem.

There can also be a problem with the capping and pumping system. During a cleaning cycle, the printer normally relies on the maintenance system to pull ink through the printhead. If the cap does not seal correctly or the pump cannot generate sufficient suction, repeated cleaning cycles may consume time and maintenance-box capacity without successfully priming the printhead.

Finally, there can be genuine physical or electrical printhead damage. If the nozzle plate or internal piezoelectric elements are damaged, cleaning will not restore those nozzles. Individual PrecisionCore nozzles are not normally repaired one at a time; once the printhead itself has suffered permanent internal damage, replacement of the printhead or printhead assembly is generally the practical repair.

Start With a Nozzle Check

Before doing additional cleaning, print a nozzle check directly from the printer's maintenance menu.

This is more useful diagnostically than repeatedly sending normal print jobs.

If portions of the nozzle pattern appear, even if they are severely broken, the printhead is at least firing some ink. That points more strongly toward clogging, restricted ink delivery, air, or maintenance-station problems.

This procedure replaces the ink inside the ink tubes and can sometimes help when normal cleaning does not adequately restore ink flow. Epson warns that the tanks should be completely refilled before performing it, that the procedure consumes substantially more ink than normal or Powerful Cleaning, and that it can shorten the maintenance box's service life. If you have already performed a Power Ink Flushing correctly and the nozzle check remains completely blank, I would stop repeating automated cleaning procedures and begin looking for a mechanical, ink-delivery, or printhead failure instead.

Check the Ink Supply Before Condemning the Printhead

Before replacing a printhead, confirm that the printhead is actually receiving ink.

A printer can have full tanks and still fail to deliver ink correctly to the head.

Some possibilities include:

  • Air introduced into the ink-delivery system.

  • A restriction somewhere between the tanks and printhead.

  • Dried or contaminated ink.

  • An improperly primed ink system.

  • A maintenance pump that cannot pull ink through the head.

  • A capping station that does not seal tightly against the printhead.

  • A heavily contaminated or dried capping surface.

  • A printhead that has dried internally after sitting unused for a long period.

This distinction is important because replacing a perfectly good printhead will not fix a printer whose real problem is that ink never reaches the head.

Inspect the Capping Station and Maintenance System

The capping station is particularly important when a printer refuses to recover through cleaning.

When the printhead parks, the cap should make a good seal against the printhead. During cleaning, the pump uses that sealed connection to draw ink through the nozzle plate.

If the cap is dirty, dried out, deformed, incorrectly positioned, or unable to seal against the printhead, the pump may pull mostly air instead of ink.

Similarly, if the waste-ink pump or associated tubing is blocked or malfunctioning, the printer may go through the motions of a cleaning cycle while accomplishing very little.

If you are comfortable performing printer repairs, this area would be worth inspecting before concluding that the PrecisionCore printhead itself has failed.

A Completely Dry Printhead Is More Difficult to Recover

If the F570 has been sitting unused for a significant period, dye-sublimation ink can dry in the nozzles and internal ink pathways.

At that point, automated cleaning may no longer be sufficient.

However, manually cleaning a PrecisionCore printhead requires considerable caution. Applying excessive pressure through a printhead can damage its internal structures. Forcing cleaning liquid through the head with a syringe is particularly risky because the internal channels and nozzle plate are designed for extremely small, controlled fluid movement.

So, I would not assume that "more pressure" means "better cleaning." A partially recoverable printhead can sometimes become permanently damaged by an overly aggressive manual cleaning attempt.

What If the Nozzles Are Actually Physically Damaged?

If the nozzle plate has been scratched, chemically damaged, delaminated, or otherwise physically compromised, there generally isn't a practical way to repair individual nozzles.

Likewise, if the piezoelectric firing elements inside the PrecisionCore head have electrically failed, cleaning fluid will not solve the problem.

At that point, the realistic repair is usually printhead replacement.

Before purchasing an expensive replacement printhead, though, I strongly recommend verifying the ink supply and maintenance system first. You don't want to install a new printhead only to discover that the original problem was a failed pump or another component preventing ink from reaching the head.

Electrical Problems Can Also Produce Blank Pages

There is another category worth considering if absolutely no ink is firing: the printhead's electrical system.

A loose or damaged printhead cable, contaminated electrical contacts, failed printhead electronics, or a main-board/head-driver problem can potentially prevent the printhead from firing even though the carriage continues moving normally.

This type of failure behaves very differently from a simple clog.

For example, if the printer appears to operate normally, accepts print jobs, moves the carriage and feeds paper but consistently outputs completely blank nozzle checks after the ink-delivery system has been verified, an electrical problem becomes more plausible.

Be especially careful around printhead cables. Connecting or disconnecting printhead FFC cables while power remains in the printer can damage both the printhead and mainboard.

Error Codes

You did not mention a specific F570 error code or maintenance code, so there isn't an error code for me to interpret from the information provided.
