Epson L550 Printhead Completely Clogged: Choosing the Right Cleaning Solution for Dried Ink

I recently watched a video about recovering an extremely dry Epson printhead. In the video, isopropyl alcohol and water appeared unsuccessful, but a product described as "Alcohol Desodorizado" was later mentioned as dissolving the hardened ink.

I have an Epson L550 printhead that became completely clogged after the printer sat unused for a long time. I would like to understand the cleaning method as accurately as possible:

  1. What was the exact brand and product name of the "Alcohol Desodorizado" used in the video?

  2. Do you know its composition or alcohol concentration, including the percentage of ethanol, water, or other ingredients?

  3. Have you successfully used the same product on other severely clogged Epson printheads?

  4. Do you still recommend it, or have you found a safer or more effective cleaning solution?

Regarding the term "Alcohol Desodorizado," we do not recall intentionally recommending or using a product by that name as a standard Epson printhead-cleaning chemical. It may have resulted from a translation, subtitle, transcription, or terminology issue in the video. "Alcohol desodorizado" generally translates to "deodorized alcohol," but that description does not identify a specific chemical formula, concentration, brand, or product.

Because the exact product cannot be confirmed, we cannot safely provide a brand name, composition, or alcohol percentage. Products marketed under similar descriptions may contain ethanol, denatured alcohol, water, fragrance-removal additives, or other solvents. Their formulas can vary considerably by manufacturer and country. For that reason, we do not recommend selecting an unidentified alcohol product based solely on that description.

Why We Usually Begin With Distilled Water

In our laboratory, distilled water is one of the first liquids we use when working with dried water-based printer ink. Epson L550 printers normally use water-based ink, so distilled water can soften and dissolve many ordinary dye-ink deposits without introducing minerals or unknown additives.

Tap water should generally be avoided because it can contain calcium, magnesium, chlorine, sediment, or other dissolved substances. These materials may remain inside microscopic nozzle channels after the water evaporates. Distilled water is not powerful enough for every blockage, but it is often a reasonable starting point for water-soluble ink residue.

The liquid should not be forced through the printhead under high pressure. Epson printheads contain extremely small internal channels, delicate nozzle plates, adhesive layers, and electrical components. Excessive syringe pressure can separate internal layers, damage the nozzle plate, rupture the manifold, or force liquid into electrical contacts.

Why Isopropyl Alcohol May Not Remove Dried Epson Ink

Isopropyl alcohol is commonly used for cleaning electronic surfaces, but it is not automatically the best solvent for water-based printer ink. Depending on the ink formulation, alcohol may fail to dissolve the colorants, binders, humectants, and resins that have dried inside the printhead.

Strong alcohol concentrations may also evaporate rapidly. Fast evaporation can leave partially dissolved residue behind or cause softened ink to dry again before it has been fully removed. Some alcohol products also contain water, denaturants, fragrances, oils, or other additives that are not suitable for the microscopic fluid channels in a printhead.

Alcohol can additionally affect certain plastics, seals, adhesives, coatings, and rubber components. A liquid that appears effective at dissolving ink outside the printhead may still create long-term damage inside it. For these reasons, we do not currently recommend an unidentified deodorized or denatured alcohol as a general solution for an Epson L550 printhead.

Selecting the Correct BCH Cleaning Solution

The correct cleaning fluid depends primarily on the ink chemistry, the severity of the blockage, and the condition of the printhead. BCH Technologies offers several cleaning solutions with different strength levels.

Clear Cleaning Solution

The clear solution is the mildest option and is suitable for dye and pigment ink. It is intended for routine dried-ink deposits, partially blocked nozzles, and situations where a lower-strength solution should be tried before progressing to a stronger chemical.

For an Epson L550 that still contains its normal water-based ink system, beginning with the mildest appropriate solution is generally preferable to immediately using the strongest cleaner.

Green Cleaning Solution

The green solution is stronger and is designed for dye, pigment, and sublimation inks. It may be considered when distilled water or the clear solution cannot adequately soften a more resistant blockage.

The green solution is formulated to provide more cleaning strength while remaining appropriate for water-based printer inks. Even so, it should be used according to its instructions and should not be forced through a printhead with excessive pressure.

Red Cleaning Solution

The red solution is our strongest general-purpose cleaner for severe water-based ink clogs. It is intended primarily for experienced or professional users dealing with heavily dried dye, pigment, or sublimation ink.

This is the solution we use for particularly stubborn clogs when milder methods are insufficient. However, stronger does not always mean safer or more effective. The red solution must be used cautiously and should not remain in the printer or printhead for more than 24 hours at full strength. It is formulated for water-based dye, pigment, and sublimation ink and should not be used for solvent ink.

Leaving a strong cleaning solution inside a printhead for too long may affect adhesives, seals, internal coatings, or other materials. The printhead should also be protected from electrical contamination, and sufficient drying time must be allowed before reconnecting power.

DTF and DTG Cleaning Solution

DTF and DTG inks, especially white ink, create a different type of blockage. White DTF ink contains a heavy pigment load that can settle, cake, and harden inside dampers, tubes, manifolds, capping stations, and printhead channels.

A Completely Clogged Printhead May Have More Than One Problem

When a printer has been unused for a long period, the visible nozzle blockage may not be the only issue. Dried ink can affect the entire ink-delivery and maintenance system, including:

  • Ink tanks and tank outlets

  • Ink tubes

  • Filters or dampers

  • Printhead inlet ports

  • Internal printhead channels

  • Nozzle plate

  • Capping station

  • Waste-ink pump

  • Wiper blade

A printhead may appear clogged when the real problem is that the capping station cannot create suction. If the cap is dirty, warped, misaligned, or not sealing against the nozzle plate, the printer's cleaning cycle cannot pull ink through the printhead.

A disconnected, blocked, or damaged waste tube can create a similar symptom. The pump may operate, but no vacuum reaches the printhead. Air leaks in the ink tubes or fittings may also prevent ink from reaching the nozzle channels.

Before applying increasingly strong chemicals, it is useful to determine whether ink is actually reaching the printhead and whether the maintenance system can create a proper seal.

Avoid Excessive Syringe Pressure

One of the greatest risks during manual cleaning is applying too much pressure. A clogged nozzle does not necessarily mean that more force is required. The internal channels are extremely small, and excessive pressure can cause permanent damage.

Cleaning fluid should move slowly. If substantial resistance is present, stop rather than continuing to push harder. Allowing the appropriate solution time to soften the residue is usually safer than attempting to force the blockage out immediately.

Pressure should also be applied evenly to the correct ink inlet. Cross-contamination can occur when dissolved ink moves between channels. Fluid leaking from unintended ports may indicate an internal seal failure, delamination, or a problem with the cleaning setup.

Protect the Electronics From Moisture

The Epson L550 printhead contains electrical contacts, flexible cables, driver components, and piezoelectric elements. Cleaning liquid must not enter the cable connectors or electronic section.

If the printhead has been removed, it should never be reinstalled and powered while moisture remains around the contacts or internal electrical areas. A liquid-contaminated printhead can short the printhead driver circuit on the mainboard. This can convert a recoverable clog into a failed printhead and damaged printer motherboard.

External surfaces and electrical contacts should be completely dry before power is restored. Heat guns, open flames, and excessive heat should not be used to accelerate drying because they may deform plastics or damage adhesives and electronic components.

When Cleaning May No Longer Be Successful

A printhead that has remained dry for an extended period may not be recoverable. The ink may have hardened deeply inside internal filters or microscopic channels that cannot be accessed safely. The nozzle plate may also be physically damaged, corroded, delaminated, or separated from the internal structure.

Repeated soaking and flushing can sometimes improve the nozzle pattern gradually, but endless aggressive cleaning can make the condition worse. Signs that may indicate permanent damage include:

  • Cleaning liquid leaking from the electrical section

  • Fluid crossing between unrelated color channels

  • No flow despite extended soaking with the correct solution

  • A nozzle pattern that never changes after several careful attempts

  • Burn marks or corrosion near the cable contacts

  • Missing nozzle sections that remain identical after cleaning

  • Printer errors appearing immediately after printhead cleaning or installation

No specific printer error code was included in the question. If the Epson L550 displays an error code after cleaning, record the exact code before continuing. An electrical or printhead-temperature error should not be treated as an ordinary ink clog.

Our Current Recommendation

We would not recommend trying to locate an unidentified product called "Alcohol Desodorizado," since we cannot verify what product was referenced or confirm its chemistry. The wording may have resulted from a translation or subtitle issue.

For an Epson L550 using ordinary water-based ink, our current approach is to begin with distilled water or the mildest compatible cleaning solution. If the clog does not respond, progress cautiously to a stronger water-based ink cleaner.
