Epson L1800 Paper and Ink Lights Flashing When Carriage Moves to Capping Station: Causes and Fixes

Question
I'm having trouble with my Epson L1800. When the carriage moves toward the capping station, the printer triggers both the paper and ink lights and stops. I replaced the capping station because I thought it was the problem, and the printer worked briefly. However, the next day it made a loud noise, locked the carriage again, and showed the same error lights.
I manually turned the white gear underneath the capping station to release the carriage, and now the carriage moves freely by hand. But when I power on the printer, the carriage moves toward the station and the printer errors out again-this time without the loud noise. The wiper blade and the white mechanism toward the left rear both appear to be down, and the carriage can pass through manually. Could the station be out of its reset position? What should I check next?

Based on your description, the most likely issue is that the capping station is out of synchronization with the printer's mechanism, or the capping station motor does not have enough torque to complete its cycle. When this happens, the white locking lever in the capping assembly can block the printhead carriage when it moves toward the left side.
Why the Paper and Ink Lights Flash
On the Epson L1800, flashing paper and ink lights together typically indicate a mechanical obstruction or carriage movement error. This occurs when the printer detects that the carriage cannot complete its travel or that a component inside the maintenance assembly is not in the expected position.
Since the error appears specifically when the carriage approaches the capping station, the problem almost always relates to one of the following:

The capping station motor lacks torque due to resistance

A gear inside the pump assembly is skipping

The white locking lever remains slightly raised
When the printer starts up, it performs a maintenance cycle where the capping station moves up and down and the pump rotates. If the gears are even slightly out of sync, the mechanism may jam and cause the printer to shut down with the flashing lights.
Why the Loud Sound Happened Earlier
The loud noise you heard previously was likely gear skipping inside the capping station assembly. This typically occurs when:

The gear timing is incorrect.

The capping station was installed while the internal gears were not in their home position.

The pump mechanism encountered resistance.
Once gears skip, the system can become permanently out of alignment, which explains why the printer briefly worked and then failed again the next day.
A Simple Sync Attempt You Can Try
One quick method to help the system re-synchronize is the following:

Move the carriage to the middle of the rail manually.

Turn the printer on while the carriage is in the center.

Allow the printer to initialize.
Starting the carriage away from the capping station sometimes gives the maintenance assembly extra time to rotate and re-sync its gears before the carriage arrives.
This does not always solve the issue, but it's a simple step worth trying.
