Epson L Series Printer Error E-11: Waste Ink Pad Maintenance and External Waste Ink Bottle Use

Question:
My Epson L series printer is showing an E-11 red light error, indicating that the waste ink pad requires maintenance and has reached the end of its service life. If I install an external waste ink bottle at the beginning (or midway through the printer's use), will this prevent the need for resetting or replacing the original waste ink pad?

Answer:

Regarding the E-11 error code:

  • E-11 is an internal Epson maintenance message that indicates the waste ink pad counter has reached its limit.

  • This alert does not measure the actual physical saturation of the pad. Instead, the printer keeps a count of cleaning cycles and estimates when the pad should be full.

Even if you install an external waste ink bottle:

  • The ink will be diverted outside, which helps keep the internal pad clean and prevents messy overflow.

  • However, the printer's firmware counter will still continue tracking waste ink usage, so eventually it will trigger the same E-11 error, regardless of the pad's actual condition.

Solutions include:

  1. Resetting the Waste Ink Counter - This requires a software tool such as the WIC Reset Utility. By purchasing and entering a reset key, you can clear the error and continue using the printer.

  2. Replacing the Waste Ink Pad at an Epson Service Center - Epson's official recommendation is to physically replace the pad when the error occurs.

In short, installing an external waste ink bottle is an excellent preventive measure for ink overflow, but it cannot stop the built-in counter from reaching its limit. You will still need to reset the counter or replace the pad when the printer shows the E-11 error.

Addressing printer problems can be complex because many issues require hands-on testing. For this reason, we're unable to provide remote troubleshooting or direct repair support. We do, however, offer in-person diagnostics and repair through our printer repair service (https://bchtechnologies.com/printer-repair-service). This service is first-come, first-served, and due to high demand it may take a few weeks before we can inspect your printer. Our service options cover either full printer repairs or specific part replacements, though we acknowledge our rates may not be the most economical.

We strongly encourage exploring self-help resources as well.
