Epson ET-8550 Touchscreen Not Working After Control Panel Cable Replacement: Causes and Repair Options

I recently replaced the control panel display cable on my Epson EcoTank ET-8550 because the touchscreen was not working. I purchased the replacement cable from BCH Technologies and installed it after watching several of your videos. Unfortunately, the touchscreen still does not respond.

Since replacing the cable did not solve the problem, would replacing the entire control panel with the one available on your website likely fix the touchscreen issue? I would really like to get the printer working again and would appreciate any guidance on what I should check before purchasing another part.

Since you have already replaced the control panel cable on your Epson ET-8550 and the touchscreen is still not responding, the next troubleshooting step depends heavily on what functions of the control panel are currently working.

If the Display Works Normally but Touch Does Not Respond

If the control panel powers on normally, the LCD displays the Epson menus correctly, and you can see everything you would normally expect on the screen, but touching the screen produces no response, then the control panel assembly itself becomes a stronger suspect.

The ET-8550 control panel contains more than just the LCD display. The visual display and the touch-sensing portion are separate functions within the assembly. Therefore, it is possible for the screen to produce a perfectly normal picture while the touch portion has failed.

In this situation, replacing the complete control panel assembly may solve the problem.

Inspect the Connectors on Both Ends

The problem may also be with the connectors rather than the cable itself.

Use good lighting and, if possible, magnification to inspect the connector on the control panel and the corresponding connector elsewhere in the printer.

Look for bent contacts, corrosion, contamination, cracked connector housings, damaged locking tabs, or contacts that have been pushed backward inside the connector.

A completely dead control panel can be caused by the panel itself, but it can also indicate a problem with the printer's mainboard, power delivery, wiring, or the connection between the mainboard and control panel.

In that situation, replacing the control panel would not necessarily fix the printer.

This distinction is useful:

Display works normally but touch does not work: the control panel/touch circuitry is a reasonable suspect.

Display and touch are both completely dead: the mainboard, power supply to the panel, cable path, connectors, or control panel could potentially be responsible.

The Mainboard Is Another Possibility

The touchscreen communicates with the printer's electronics through the control panel wiring. If the mainboard is not supplying the correct voltage or is not communicating properly with the touch circuitry, installing a new control panel may produce exactly the same symptom.

This is why replacing parts one at a time can sometimes become expensive. A replacement cable does not automatically rule out the control panel, and replacing the control panel would not automatically rule out the mainboard.

Be Careful When Disconnecting or Reconnecting Ribbon Cables
