Epson ET-8550 Prints Two Pages, Then Pulls Back the Third and Reports a Paper Jam

Question:
My Epson ET-8550 prints two pages correctly. On the third page, it prints and then pulls the paper back before reporting a paper jam. What could be causing this?
Answer:
First, check the print settings in both the application and Epson driver. Make sure 2-Sided/Duplex printing is turned off for the test. In duplex printing, the printer pulls a sheet back through its return path to print the other side. A curled sheet, obstruction, or feed problem along that path could cause a jam during the return.
Next, note exactly what happens to the third page:
- Does it finish printing before it reverses?
- Does it reverse while the image is still being printed?
- Does the sheet nearly exit, but remain caught in the output rollers?
- Does another sheet begin feeding at the same time?
- Does the printhead carriage move to the capping station before the sheet pulls back?
If the page is fully printed but does not exit completely, the paper may be slipping or catching before the printer expects it to clear. Paper curl, an obstruction, or uneven roller pressure are possibilities. If the carriage first parks at the capping station, an ink-system operation may be occurring while the sheet remains in the path; that is one possibility to investigate, not a confirmed diagnosis.
With the printer off and unplugged, inspect the accessible paper path and rear cover/duplex unit according to Epson's instructions. Look for scraps of paper, foreign objects, curled or folded paper, displaced guides, dirty or damaged rollers, or a rear unit that is not seated properly. Avoid forcing parts or reaching into areas that are not described as user accessible.
Paper sensing is another area to consider. The PE/PW sensors and their connections help the printer detect paper presence, position, and width. Contamination, a loose connection, or an intermittent sensor signal could contribute to a false jam report. However, this symptom by itself does not establish that a particular sensor has failed. The feed path and actual sheet movement should be checked as well.
If the basic checks do not resolve the issue, service diagnosis may include the paper-feed encoder and sensor, ejection rollers and pinch pressure, and duplex-path mechanism, including the intermediate roller and its one-way clutch. The change slider/Holder Cam may affect feeder engagement, but it does not itself command the motor to reverse. I would not replace the ASF assembly, change slider, or Holder Cam based only on seeing the sheet move backward.
Try a simple test with fresh, flat, supported plain paper and the correct paper size and type selected. Make sure the guides touch the paper without squeezing or bowing it. With duplex disabled, print five copies in one job, then print the same page as five separate one-page jobs. Epson recommends loading only one sheet at a time in the ET-8550's rear paper feed slot; the cassette has different loading instructions. These tests can help show whether the issue depends on the job, paper, or paper source. Epson ET-8550 User's Guide [https://files.support.epson.com/docid/cpd5/cpd59879.pdf]
If the problem continues, a short video showing the end of the second page through the jam would be useful. Please include the paper movement and, if possible, the printhead carriage. Also note the exact error message, paper size and type, paper source, whether the third page finishes printing, whether duplex was disabled, and whether this began after a paper jam, cleaning, repair, or paper change.
Thank you for reaching out. These details can help distinguish a paper-path or sensing issue from a job-setting problem.
