Epson ET-8550 Printing Blurry Near the Bottom of the Page: Paper Feed, PGU, Springs, and PE Sensor Issues

I have an Epson ET-8550 that recently started printing blurry near the bottom of the page. The print quality looks clear and sharp through most of the sheet, but as the printer gets close to the end of the paper, the image or text becomes blurry. Could this be related to the paper feed system, the PGU, springs, or the PE sensor? What should I check first?

For your Epson ET-8550, blurry printing near the bottom of the page is very often related to paper feeding rather than a printhead or ink-quality problem. Since the print is clear and sharp through most of the sheet, the printhead is likely capable of producing a clean image. The problem appears when the paper is almost finished traveling through the printer, which points us toward the paper feed system, paper tension, exit rollers, the PGU area, or the sensor system that controls paper position.

The first thing I would check is the paper feed. When the printer reaches the bottom portion of the page, there is less paper being held by the rear feed rollers and more of the sheet has already passed through the printer. At that point, the printer depends heavily on the lower paper feed rollers, exit rollers, pressure rollers, and the paper guide unit to keep the sheet flat and moving at the correct speed. If the paper slips, hesitates, lifts slightly, or advances unevenly, the printhead may still fire correctly, but the ink will land in the wrong position. That can make the bottom portion look blurry, doubled, smeared, or slightly out of registration.

On the Epson ET-8550, the PGU, or paper guide unit, is an important part of this process. If the PGU is not seated correctly, if one of the springs is missing or weak, or if the paper path is not holding the sheet evenly, the bottom of the page may shift as it exits. This can create blurring only near the trailing edge of the paper. The problem may not show up at the top or middle of the page because the paper is still being controlled by more rollers at those stages.

You should also inspect the springs around the paper guide and feed mechanism. A small spring that is loose, stretched, misplaced, or missing can reduce the pressure needed to keep the paper stable. Even a tiny loss of tension can cause the paper to move differently near the end of the sheet. If the PE sensor flag is dirty, sticky, bent, out of place, or blocked by dust, ink mist, paper fibers, or a small piece of torn paper, the printer may misread the paper's movement. This can sometimes cause feeding errors, incorrect paper positioning, or blurry printing near the end of the page. Even when there is no visible error code, the sensor can still contribute to poor feed timing.

Although you did not mention a specific error code, some ET-8550 paper-feed-related problems may eventually trigger paper jam or paper feed errors if the condition worsens. First, check the paper itself. Make sure the paper is not curled, damp, too thick, too thin, or outside the printer's recommended specifications. A curled trailing edge can lift as it exits the printer and cause the printhead-to-paper distance to change. When that distance changes, ink droplets may spread slightly before landing, creating a blurry area near the bottom.

Second, test with plain copy paper. If the issue only happens with photo paper, cardstock, sublimation paper, DTF-related sheets, or specialty media, the printer may be struggling with paper thickness, coating, curl, or friction. Plain paper testing helps separate a general mechanical problem from a media-specific problem.

Third, clean and inspect the feed rollers. Dust, coating residue, paper fibers, or dried ink can reduce roller grip. When the printer reaches the bottom of the page, reduced roller grip becomes more noticeable because the sheet is less supported. Use proper roller-cleaning methods and avoid soaking the printer. The goal is to restore traction without damaging rubber parts.

Fourth, inspect the exit rollers and star wheels. If the exit rollers are dirty, uneven, or not pressing correctly, the paper may drift or vibrate near the end. If the paper is not exiting smoothly, the print can appear blurry even though the printhead is working normally.

Fifth, check the PGU and its springs. Make sure the paper guide unit is properly installed and sitting evenly. Look for missing springs, disconnected springs, uneven pressure, cracked plastic tabs, or anything that looks different from the other side of the printer. On many Epson printers, the left and right sides should mirror each other mechanically. If one side has more tension than the other, the paper may skew or slip.

Sixth, inspect the PE sensor area. Look for a stuck or dirty sensor flag. The flag should move freely and return properly. If there is a tiny piece of paper, dust, or ink buildup interfering with the sensor, the printer may not track the paper correctly. Be gentle in this area because sensor flags and nearby plastic parts can be delicate.

Seventh, run the printer's built-in maintenance options, including printhead alignment and paper guide cleaning if available. Alignment will not fix a slipping paper-feed system, but it is still worth doing after confirming the paper path is clean and mechanically stable. If the feed is unstable, however, alignment results may be inconsistent.

It is also important to distinguish between blurry printing and smearing. If the print looks fuzzy but not physically rubbed, the issue is more likely feed accuracy, paper height, or printhead-to-paper distance. If the ink is actually smeared or dragged, then the paper may be lifting and touching the printhead or underside of the carriage. That can happen with curled paper, incorrect platen gap behavior, debris in the paper path, or a paper guide that is not holding the sheet flat.

For the ET-8550, I would start with the simplest explanation: check paper feed first. Since the blurry area appears near the bottom of the page only, the paper is probably losing stable movement as the trailing edge goes through the printer. The PGU, springs, PE sensor, feed rollers, and exit rollers are all part of that paper-control system. A printhead problem usually affects the whole page, creates missing lines, banding, color loss, or nozzle gaps. Your symptom sounds more like a mechanical paper-feed issue than an ink delivery issue.
