I have an Epson ET-8550. I installed the replacement parts, but now I am having another problem when I press or operate the tray. What should the output tray normally do, and what could cause it to stop, jam, or behave incorrectly after the repair?

How the ET-8550 Output Tray Is Supposed to Work
On the Epson ET-8550, the front output tray is motorized. Under normal operation, you should not need to pull the tray completely outward by hand before printing.
The normal sequence is approximately:

You send a print job to the printer.

The printer activates the output-tray mechanism.

The tray extends from the lower front area of the printer.
-
The printer feeds and prints the sheet.
-
The printed sheet exits onto the extended tray.

When printing is finished, you can select Output Tray from the printer's Home screen to retract the tray.
Epson specifically instructs users to leave the front cover open so the output tray can extend automatically when a print job begins.

Do Not Confuse the Output Tray With the Paper Cassette
One important distinction is that the output tray and the paper cassette are different components.
The paper cassettes hold unused paper before printing. The output tray is the moving platform at the front and bottom of the printer that receives the paper after it has been printed. Epson identifies the output tray separately from paper cassettes 1 and 2 in its ET-8550 documentation.
This distinction becomes especially important during a repair or DTF conversion because several components are packed closely together in the lower-front portion of the printer.
What Is Happening Mechanically?
The ET-8550 output tray is not simply a loose telescoping plastic shelf. It has a powered drive mechanism.
Internally, the tray movement involves a motorized mechanism and gearing that moves the tray outward and inward. Because the printer commands this movement electronically, the tray must be assembled so that the mechanical parts can travel through their intended range without binding.
After replacing parts or disassembling this section of the printer, a problem can occur if:

a gear is installed in the wrong position;

two gears are not meshing correctly;

a gear was omitted during reassembly;

a gear is cracked or stripped;
-
the tray is not seated correctly in its guide rails;

the tray is mechanically blocked;

a wire or flexible cable is disconnected;

a connector is only partially inserted;

a replacement part is positioned differently from the original;

the mechanism was assembled while the tray and drive gears were in mismatched positions; or

If the Problem Happens When You Press the Output Tray Command
If by "when I press it" you mean that you select Output Tray on the touchscreen and something goes wrong, pay close attention to what the printer actually does.
For example, there is a significant difference between these symptoms:
You hear the motor, but the tray does not move:
This strongly suggests looking at the mechanical drive first. A gear may not be engaged, a gear may be damaged, or the tray may be physically stuck.
The tray moves slightly and then stops:
The mechanism may be encountering excessive resistance. Check for a misaligned rail, incorrectly installed plastic part, trapped wire, gear timing problem, or something preventing the tray from reaching its normal position.
You hear repeated clicking or grinding:
Do not continue operating the tray repeatedly. Clicking often means that a gear is slipping, jumping teeth, or trying to drive a mechanism that cannot move. Continued operation can turn a minor alignment problem into damaged gears.
The motor runs continuously or longer than expected:
The printer may be commanding the tray to move but the mechanism is not reaching the expected end position. Recheck the installation carefully rather than repeatedly activating it.
Nothing happens at all:
Check electrical connections to the mechanism as well as the mechanical installation. A disconnected motor connector, damaged cable, pinched wire, or connection that looks inserted but is not fully seated can produce this type of symptom.
Be Careful About Manually Pushing or Pulling the Tray
Because the output tray is motor-driven, I would avoid repeatedly forcing it inward or outward by hand.
A small amount of movement or play does not necessarily indicate a problem, but forcing the tray can place load directly onto the gear train. If the gears are not in the correct position, manually pushing the tray can cause the gears to skip teeth or become incorrectly synchronized.
Epson's normal procedure is to retract the tray by selecting Output Tray from the Home screen rather than simply pushing the tray closed.

Check the Gear Position After Reassembly
Since the problem appeared after installing parts, I would place reassembly and alignment high on the list of possibilities.
When working with a motorized mechanism, it is possible for the tray itself to be in one position while the drive mechanism is effectively assembled in another position. For example, the tray may be physically closed while the gear train has been positioned as though the tray were partly extended.
When the printer powers the motor, the mechanism may then reach a mechanical stop before the printer expects it to.
If you disassembled the output-tray assembly, compare your current assembly carefully with any photographs or video you made before taking it apart. Look especially at:

gear orientation;

gear engagement;
-
springs and small plastic levers;
-
tray guide tracks;
-
wire routing;
-
connectors;
-
retaining clips;
-
screw placement; and
-
the starting position of the tray mechanism.
A screw placed in the wrong location can also cause trouble because some printer screws have different lengths. A screw that is too long may protrude into the travel area of another component.
Check for Resistance With the Printer Powered Off
If you are mechanically inspecting the assembly, power the printer off normally and disconnect power before opening or manipulating internal components.
Look for anything obviously preventing normal movement. Do not force the tray through resistance. If it reaches a hard stop unexpectedly, investigate the cause rather than applying more pressure.
A piece of plastic may look properly installed from the outside while a guide tab underneath has actually landed on the wrong side of a rail.
This is particularly common after a mechanism has been completely removed and reinstalled.
DTF Conversion Makes This Mechanism More Important
If this ET-8550 is being converted for DTF printing, the output-tray system deserves additional attention.
The stock ET-8550 was designed with the assumption that the original motorized tray mechanism is present and can operate normally. A DTF conversion may change the preferred film path, and some conversions modify, remove, reposition, or work around portions of the original output area.
However, mechanically removing something does not automatically mean the printer's electronics will stop expecting that mechanism to operate.
Therefore, if the output-tray assembly has been modified during the conversion, verify that the modification does not:

block the output-tray mechanism;
-
interfere with its gears;
-
prevent the motor from moving;
-
leave an electrical connector disconnected;
-
place the tray in a permanently incorrect mechanical position; or
-
create resistance that was not present before the conversion.
The goal with DTF is generally to create a predictable and unobstructed film path, but that needs to be done without unintentionally causing another printer mechanism to bind.
What About an Error Code?
No specific Epson error code or numerical error message was included in the question.
That is important because an exact code or exact touchscreen message can substantially narrow down the problem. If the printer displays an error, record the complete message exactly as shown rather than relying only on a description such as "printer error."
For example, the troubleshooting direction can be very different depending on whether the machine reports a general printer error, paper-related error, mechanism obstruction, or simply fails to operate the tray without displaying a code.
In this particular situation, because the problem started immediately after parts were installed, I would first suspect a mechanical alignment, gear engagement, connector, or installation issue before assuming that an unrelated electronic component suddenly failed.
Avoid Repeatedly Testing a Grinding or Jammed Mechanism
If the tray is grinding, clicking, jumping, or becoming stuck, I would not keep pressing the Output Tray button repeatedly to see whether it eventually starts working.
Every attempt puts additional load on the same gears and motor.
A mechanism that originally only needed to be realigned can become a parts-replacement problem if a plastic gear is stripped during repeated testing.
Instead, inspect the installation again and determine what is preventing the tray from completing its normal movement.
