Question:
I have an Epson ET-8550 that is only about two months old. I've barely used it, maybe sent a couple of prints, but I'm already getting error codes 000031 and 031006. Do these mean the printhead has failed, or could it be a problem with the mainboard?
Answer:
Understanding the Error Codes
-
Error 000031 (Fatal Error): This code typically indicates a serious hardware malfunction. On the Epson ET-8550, it often points to a mechanical blockage, a sensor failure, or an electronic fault in the printhead drive system.
-
Error 031006: This is another fatal error tied closely to the printhead or its communication with the mainboard. It often means the printer detected a failure in sending or receiving data from the printhead.
Because both codes reference critical system errors, they usually signal problems with either the printhead assembly or the mainboard (logic board).
Possible Causes
-
Printhead Issue
-
A defective printhead can trigger both codes. Even if the printer has had minimal use, a manufacturing defect or shipping damage could be the root cause.
-
Sometimes ink leaks or clogs in the printhead's internal channels can short out the circuitry, especially in pigment-heavy printers.
-
-
Mainboard / Motherboard Issue
-
The mainboard is the "brain" of the printer and manages data communication with the printhead. If the mainboard is defective, the signals to the printhead will be misread, causing fatal error codes like 000031 and 031006.
-
Power surges, static discharge, or factory-level electronic defects are common culprits.
-
-
Cabling or Connector Fault
-
Less commonly, loose or damaged ribbon cables between the mainboard and the printhead can cause these errors.
-
What You Can Do
-
Reset and Restart: Power off, unplug for a few minutes, and restart. While this rarely resolves fatal errors, it's worth trying first.
-
Check for Obstructions: Ensure nothing is jamming the carriage path or obstructing sensors.
-
Warranty Consideration: Since your printer is only two months old, you should contact Epson immediately. Attempting deep repairs yourself could void your warranty. Epson usually replaces units with these error codes under warranty because they point to major component failures.
If you're outside warranty coverage or wish to attempt a fix yourself:
-
Inspect the ribbon cables for any burn marks or misalignment.
-
Replacement of either the printhead or the mainboard may be necessary, but it requires specialized tools and care.
Addressing printer issues can be a complicated affair due to the hands-on nature of the problems. That's why we're not able to provide remote troubleshooting, suggestions, or support for printer repairs. We offer an in-person diagnostic and repair service (https://bchtechnologies.com/printer-repair-service), available on a first-come, first-served basis. Depending on demand, it may take a few weeks before we can take in your printer. Our services cover both full printer repairs and individual component repairs. That said, we know our rates aren't always the cheapest option, so we highly encourage self-research. A great starting point is our YouTube channel's homepage (https://youtube.com/@bchtechnologies).
