Epson ET-8550 Error Codes 000031 and 031006: Printhead or Mainboard Problem?

Question:
I have a question about my Epson ET-8550 printer. At first, I received error code 000031. I cleaned the print head as best as I could because I didn't see a paper jam, but then I got a new error code 031006. With the first error, no white DTF ink was coming out at all, and after cleaning, the second error appeared. I'm unsure if the issue is with the mainboard or the print head. If I were to buy a new fuse or mainboard and it fails again, what would I need to do? How can I ensure that the mainboard won't fail again?
Answer:
Let's go through your error codes in detail:
Error Code 000031
This code typically signals a printhead carriage overload or position error. The printer believes the carriage motor cannot move properly. Common causes include:
-
Paper jam or foreign object: Something lodged in the paper path or around the carriage rail can block movement.
-
Loose or damaged timing belt: If the belt is stretched or slipping, the carriage won't stay in sync.
-
Disconnected or misaligned printhead cable: A faulty connection can confuse the printer into thinking the head is blocked.
-
Mechanical obstructions: Issues like a malfunctioning APG (automated platen gap), out-of-sync capping station, or even a misfit platen can trigger this.
-
Excessive weight on the carriage: If you're using a CIS (Continuous Ink System), the tubes or tanks might add resistance.
Because your white DTF ink wasn't flowing, it's also possible the clogging or ink system strain contributed to the overload.
Error Code 031006
This is a more serious error, often pointing to mainboard failure. Specifically, Epson ET-8550 error 031006 is commonly linked to:
-
Blown fuse (F1 or F2) on the mainboard: This usually happens due to a short circuit.
-
Damaged FFC (Flat Flexible Cable) connecting the printhead: A pinched, cut, or improperly seated cable can short the board.
-
Dead or internally shorted printhead: If the printhead has failed, it can cause the board to blow its fuse.
In most cases, error 031006 means the mainboard, the printhead, and the FFC cable all need to be inspected. Simply replacing the mainboard without addressing the root cause (damaged cable or faulty head) risks blowing the new board again.
Repair and Replacement Considerations
-
If you purchase a new mainboard (or fuse), ensure you test and replace the FFC cable at the same time.
-
Closely examine the printhead for burn marks, dried ink shorts, or physical damage. If the head is faulty, a new board won't last long.

If you're not comfortable with soldering or electrical checks, professional repair may be necessary. BCH Technologies can repair the mainboard, but we recommend having the printhead and cable tested first to prevent repeat failure.
Addressing printer issues can be a complicated affair due to the hands-on nature of the problems.
