I am still receiving error code 100017 on my Epson ET-8550 after installing the replacement scanner lamp and cable combination. Is there another step or component that I may have missed during installation? I also noticed that there does not appear to be anything holding the scanner assembly firmly on the track. Is there supposed to be a clip, bracket, or another part securing it?

The Epson ET-8550 includes a scanner unit above the printing mechanism, and the scanner must complete its initialization sequence when the printer starts. In your situation, error code 100017 indicates that the printer is still detecting a problem during the scanner's startup or positioning process. Replacing the scanner lamp and cable assembly will not clear the error if the lamp is not receiving power, the scanner carriage is not moving, one of the flat-flex cables is installed incorrectly, or the scanner's mechanical drive is not assembled properly.
First Check Whether the Scanner Lamp Lights Up
Turn on the printer while watching the scanner area through the scanner glass. You may need to observe it from an angle or in a slightly darkened room.
Check whether the scanner lamp briefly illuminates during startup.
If the lamp does not light at all, begin by inspecting the smaller fine-pitch flat-flex cable, or FFC, connected to the scanner lamp assembly. This cable has closely spaced electrical contacts and can easily appear connected even when it is not inserted completely.
Turn off the printer and disconnect its power before touching or reseating any cable. Then inspect the smaller fine-pitch cable for the following conditions:

The cable is inserted completely and evenly into the connector.

The connector's locking tab is fully closed.

A fine-pitch FFC can be offset by one or two contacts while still appearing to be inside the connector. If that happens, the scanner lamp may not receive the correct power or control signals, and error code 100017 can remain even though the cable has technically been installed.
Do not repeatedly power on the printer while experimenting with the cable's orientation. An incorrectly installed FFC can short adjacent contacts and potentially damage the scanner board or mainboard.
Check Whether the Scanner Mechanism Moves
If the scanner lamp lights up, the next question is whether the scanner carriage moves during startup.
The scanner carriage is the moving assembly underneath the scanner glass. When the printer initializes, this assembly should attempt to travel through part of its normal range and locate its starting position.
If the lamp turns on but the scanner mechanism does not move, inspect the regular-pitch scanner FFC cable. This cable is responsible for another portion of the scanner assembly's electrical operation and should be checked separately from the smaller fine-pitch lamp cable.
Once again, unplug the printer before working on the cable. Check that it is:

If this cable is loose or installed incorrectly, the scanner motor or scanner electronics may not operate even though the lamp itself illuminates.
Inspect the Mechanical Drive and Gear Alignment
If the lamp lights but the scanner carriage does not move, or if it tries to move and then stops, inspect the mechanical installation carefully.
The scanner movement depends on its drive mechanism being assembled and aligned correctly. Check the gears and related moving components inside the scanner assembly. A gear may look installed but still fail to engage the neighboring gear correctly.
Look for the following problems:

A gear installed above or below its correct position

Two gears that are not fully meshing

A shaft that is not seated in both mounting points

A missing washer, bushing, spring, or spacer

A gear placed backward during reassembly

A cracked gear hub that spins without turning the shaft

A cover pressing against the scanner carriage

Dried grease, debris, or a foreign object blocking movement

With the printer unplugged, determine whether the scanner mechanism can move through its intended path without binding. Do not force the scanner carriage. If it stops firmly, locate the obstruction instead of applying more pressure.
A small amount of resistance from the gear train may be normal. However, grinding, clicking, skipping, or a complete mechanical lock suggests that the drive was not aligned correctly during installation.
Is Something Supposed to Hold the Scanner Assembly on the Track?
There may not be an obvious separate clip holding the moving scanner assembly down from above. The carriage is generally retained by how its housing sits in the guide path and how it engages with the drive mechanism.
However, the assembly should not be completely loose, lift freely out of position, tilt severely, or move independently from the drive system. If it does, something may be incorrectly seated or missing.
Compare the replacement assembly with the original part and inspect:

The guide tabs on both ends of the scanner carriage

The grooves or channels in which those tabs travel

The drive-side gear or engagement point

Any small plastic retainers molded into the frame

The position of the lamp assembly relative to the scanner glass

Do not install an improvised screw, clip, adhesive, or bracket unless you can confirm that the original printer used one in that location. Adding a homemade retainer may prevent the scanner from moving and could create additional damage.
If the scanner carriage appears loose, remove it and reinstall it carefully rather than attempting to hold it in place with an added part. Make sure both ends enter their guide points evenly before reconnecting the drive mechanism.
The Large Fine-Pitch Cable Is Probably Not the First Cable to Suspect
The large fine-pitch cable in this area connects to the control-panel system. Because the printer's control panel is operating well enough to display error code 100017, that large cable is probably functioning sufficiently for the panel to communicate with the printer.
Therefore, you do not need to begin your diagnosis with the large control-panel FFC unless the screen is blank, flickering, showing corrupted graphics, losing touch response, or failing to power on.
Your troubleshooting should initially focus on:

The smaller fine-pitch lamp cable

The regular-pitch scanner cable

The scanner gears and mechanical alignment
The fact that the control panel displays the error helps narrow the problem, but it does not completely prove that every conductor in the large cable is perfect. It simply makes that cable a less likely cause of this particular scanner initialization failure.
Check Both Ends of Every Cable
A common repair mistake is checking only the end of the cable that was recently installed. Each scanner cable has two ends, and either end can be loose, misaligned, damaged, or connected incorrectly.
When checking the cables, inspect both the scanner-side connector and the printer-side connector. Pay particular attention to connector locks. Some FFC connectors use a flip-up latch, while others use a sliding latch. Pulling on the wrong type of latch can crack it or separate it from the connector body.
A cable can also fail internally even when it looks normal from the outside. If you still have the original cable and it was not physically damaged, compare its length, width, contact spacing, and contact orientation with the replacement. Two cables may look nearly identical but have different contact layouts.
Watch What Happens During Startup
The exact behavior during the first few seconds after pressing the power button can help identify which portion of the scanner system is failing.
If the lamp does not illuminate and the scanner does not move:
Suspect the smaller fine-pitch lamp cable, the regular scanner cable, a disconnected scanner board, an incompatible replacement assembly, or a loss of power to the scanner system.
If the lamp illuminates but the scanner does not move:
Focus on the regular-pitch cable, motor connection, scanner drive gears, carriage installation, and mechanical binding.
If the scanner moves slightly and then stops:
Look for incorrect gear timing, a blocked carriage, a cable interfering with movement, a carriage installed outside its guide, or a failure to reach the expected home position.
If the scanner makes clicking or grinding sounds:
Turn off the printer promptly. The gears may be misaligned, a gear may be installed backward, or the carriage may be mechanically jammed.
If the scanner moves normally but error code 100017 remains:
Recheck the lamp operation, cable contact alignment, home-position area, replacement-part compatibility, and the scanner electronics. A replacement component can also be defective even when it is new.
Make Sure the Replacement Part Matches the ET-8550
Verify that the lamp and cable combination is intended for the Epson ET-8550 or its correct regional equivalent. Parts from a printer that looks similar may fit physically while having a different cable layout, electrical configuration, scanner resolution, sensor arrangement, or connector orientation.
