Epson ET-8550 Error Code 031006 During Conversion: Causes, Diagnosis, and Repair Options

Question

I attempted to convert a brand-new Epson ET-8550 printer that has never been used and has never had ink installed. When I power it on, I receive error code 031006. Is this something you can repair? If so, how much would the repair cost, and where can I send the printer?

Answer

The Epson error code 031006 is typically associated with a printhead circuit or mainboard communication issue. It usually appears when the printer detects abnormal electrical feedback from the printhead. What makes your situation unusual is that the printer has never been used and has never touched ink, because most cases of 031006 occur after the printhead has been operating with ink.

What Error Code 031006 Usually Means

Error 031006 generally indicates one of the following:

  1. Short circuit or electrical fault in the printhead

  2. Mainboard driver failure

  3. Damaged printhead cable (FFC)

  4. Power surge affecting the printhead driver circuit

  5. Improper electrical load detected during startup

On Epson EcoTank models like the ET-8550, the printer performs a power-on diagnostic. If the firmware detects abnormal resistance or voltage in the printhead circuits, it immediately triggers 031006 to prevent further damage.

Why This Can Happen Even in a Brand-New Printer

Although rare, a new printer can show this error if:

  • The printhead was damaged during shipping

  • There is a factory defect in the printhead

  • The mainboard driver IC failed

  • A ribbon cable is slightly misaligned

  • Static discharge occurred during handling

Because the printer has never had ink, we can rule out one common cause-burnout caused by dry firing after ink depletion. That leaves hardware failure in either the mainboard or the printhead as the most likely possibilities.

Following the "Power Trail" to Diagnose the Issue

When diagnosing 031006, technicians often follow what we call the printer's power trail. This means checking each component in the electrical chain:

  1. Power supply → mainboard

  2. Mainboard driver circuits

  3. Printhead ribbon cables

  4. Printhead internal circuits

In many cases, the mainboard is the easier component to repair or replace. Driver circuits can sometimes fail independently and cause the printer to falsely detect a printhead fault.

However, if the printhead itself has an internal short, the printhead may unfortunately be permanently damaged. When this happens, the printer triggers 031006 every time it powers up.

Typical Repair Outcomes

From our experience with Epson printers:

  • Best case: Mainboard repair or replacement fixes the problem.

  • Moderate case: Cable reseating or replacement resolves the issue.

  • Worst case: The printhead is burnt or shorted, which usually requires replacing the entire printhead assembly.

Unfortunately, printheads are often the most expensive component in the printer, so determining whether the fault lies in the printhead or the board is the key step.

Addressing printer issues can be a complicated affair due to the hands-on nature of the problems. Therefore, we're not able to provide remote troubleshooting, suggestions, or support for printer repairs. We do offer an in-person evaluation and repair service through our local diagnostic facility at BCH Technologies Printer Repair Service (https://bchtechnologies.com/printer-repair-service). Because of the high demand for repairs, we operate on a first-come, first-served basis, and it may take a few weeks before we can accept a printer for drop-off or shipment. Our services are designed to repair either entire printers or specific components, and we provide clear instructions on how to proceed once the printer is received. That said, we understand that our repair rates may not be the most economical option. For that reason, we strongly encourage exploring self-help resources online. A good starting point is YouTube, especially our channel homepage at BCH Technologies YouTube Channel (https://youtube.com/@bchtechnologies). You can search for specific repair topics using the search icon located next to "About" on the right side of the menu bar. I receive dozens of questions daily asking if we have videos on certain issues, and after creating hundreds of videos over the past nine years, it's difficult to remember every one. Using YouTube's search feature will be the fastest way to find relevant tutorials. Additionally, YouTube may recommend helpful videos from other creators that could also guide you through troubleshooting steps.

Thank you again for reaching out and for your interest in our services. We truly appreciate your support and engagement with BCH Technologies. If you have further questions after reviewing the repair page, please feel free to contact us again.
