Question
A customer reported that after converting an Epson ET-8550 with a third-party CISS system, the white ink stopped printing. They cleaned the printhead and dampers, but afterward the printer displayed error code 031006 on startup. They wondered whether the issue could be an F1 fuse failure on the motherboard. They also asked what is included in the $75 mainboard repair service fee, and whether the parts and labor are charged separately.
Answer
Understanding Error 031006 on the ET-8550
The 031006 error on Epson EcoTank and Expression-type models is a general hardware protection fault. It most commonly appears when the mainboard detects an electrical problem during initialization, which causes the printer to enter a safety lock to prevent further damage.
Typical triggers include:
1. A blown F1 or F2 fuse on the mainboard
-
The F1 fuse is a surface-mounted pico fuse that protects circuits supplying the printhead and carriage motor.
-
These fuses can blow when:
-
The printhead data cable is not fully seated during reinstallation
-
A ribbon cable is inserted at a slight angle
-
Ink contamination or moisture bridges contacts
-
A short occurs during printhead cleaning
-
The printhead has an internal short (common in DTF-converted units)
-
Given that the error appeared immediately after reassembly, the fuse is a likely culprit-but not the only possibility.
2. Incorrectly seated or damaged FFC ribbon cables
If a ribbon cable was inserted even 1-2 mm off alignment, the board can detect a short and throw error 031006. This is extremely common after printhead cleaning.
3. Printhead internal short
In DTF environments, white ink is highly conductive. If any residue migrates into the printhead's internal circuitry (especially after cleaning), the printhead can short out the mainboard's protected line and blow the fuse.
4. Motherboard component failure
Less common, but electrical surges, static discharge, or repeated fuse blows can damage:
-
Transistors driving the printhead
-
Motor driver ICs
-
Voltage regulators
In these cases, the error persists even after fuse replacement.

What the $75 fee covers
The $75 is the base diagnostic and labor fee, which includes:
-
Professional testing of all board power rails
-
Fuse testing (F1/F2) and identification of the failure cause
-
Inspection for shorted circuits, burned components, or damaged traces
-
Professional repair attempts, including fuse replacement if feasible
-
Post-repair functionality test on a live printer
-
Return shipping of the repaired or non-repairable board
Are parts included?
-
Minor components (like fuses) are usually included at no extra charge.
-
Major components (such as MOSFET driver chips or voltage regulators) may incur additional cost only if required, and we always contact you first for approval.
-
If the board is not repairable, the $75 covers the diagnostic attempt and return shipping.
To answer your question directly:
You do not pay for labor again. You only pay for additional parts if they are needed.
Important Note About DTF-Converted ET-8550 Units
The ET-8550 is extremely sensitive electronically-more so when converted for DTF. White ink introduces risks of:
-
Corrosion
-
Conductive bridging
-
Printhead shorts
These issues often blow the F1 fuse or damage driver ICs. If you plan to continue using a DTF CISS system, ensure:
-
All cables are clean and fully dry
-
You never power on the printer with wet cables or contacts
-
The CISS is grounded and stable
-
There is no ink migration inside the printhead cable bay
A Final Note
Handling printer hardware issues can be complex and hands-on, which limits the troubleshooting we can safely provide remotely. For that reason, we aren't able to offer step-by-step repair guidance online. We do, however, offer in-person diagnostic and repair services through our local repair facility:
BCH Technologies Printer Repair Service (https://bchtechnologies.com/printer-repair-service)
