Epson ET-8550 Error 31004 After Printhead Replacement: FFC Cable and Printhead Connection Troubleshooting

After putting everything back together, the printer started showing an error code that looked like 31004. I used paper towels for most of the cleaning. Based on your description, the most important clue is that the error appeared immediately after the Epson ET-8550 printhead was removed and reinstalled. My first suspicion would be the FFC (Flexible Flat Cable) connections between the printhead and the carriage electronics.

If the code you saw was indeed 31004, please keep in mind that Epson does not provide a detailed explanation of this specific service-level code in the standard ET-8500/ET-8550 user documentation. Epson's public documentation generally treats this type of condition as a printer error and recommends restarting the printer and obtaining service if the error remains. Check the Printhead FFC Cables First

The ET-8550 printhead communicates with the printer through flexible flat ribbon cables, commonly called FFC cables. These cables carry electrical signals between the printhead, carriage board, and printer electronics.

When reinstalling the printhead, it is surprisingly easy for one of these cables to be:

  • Slightly crooked in the connector.

  • Not inserted completely.

  • Inserted with the contacts facing the wrong direction.

  • Pulled partly out while repositioning the printhead.

  • Creased or damaged during disassembly.

  • Contaminated with ink, cleaning solution, moisture, or debris.

  • Installed correctly at the printhead but loosened at the other end.

A cable can look connected while still being one or two millimeters short of its proper position. That small difference may be enough for the printer to lose communication with the printhead.

I would therefore inspect every FFC cable that was disconnected or moved during the printhead replacement, rather than checking only the most obvious ribbon cable.

Turn the Printer Off Before Touching the FFC Cables

Before working around these connections, disconnect the printer from power.

Do not unplug, insert, or reseat a printhead FFC cable while the printer is powered. The printhead circuitry operates through sensitive electronic components, and an incorrectly positioned cable can potentially create an electrical problem when power is applied.

After disconnecting the printer, carefully inspect the ribbon cable ends. The exposed conductive contacts should be straight, clean, and dry. Look closely for dark marks, bent traces, torn edges, damaged contacts, or a crease near the end of the cable.

When reinstalling an FFC, make sure it goes into the connector perfectly straight and evenly across its entire width. If one side is farther into the socket than the other, communication may fail even though the cable appears to be installed.

Also inspect any locking tabs on the FFC connectors. If the connector has a locking mechanism, make sure it is in the proper position and is actually securing the cable.

Check the Printhead Seating

The printhead itself should also be checked to ensure that it is sitting correctly in the carriage.

If the head is slightly tilted, sitting on top of a wire or tube, or not positioned against its proper mounting surfaces, the FFC cables may be under tension. That tension can pull a cable slightly out of its connector after you finish assembling the carriage.

Before tightening everything down, confirm that the printhead sits naturally in its mounting location and that none of the cables are being stretched, pinched, or sharply folded.

Could the Paper Towels Have Caused the Error?

Using paper towels does not automatically mean that you damaged the printer, but they can create a couple of problems depending on where and how they were used.

Paper towels can leave behind small fibers or lint. Around mechanical areas, that may not matter much. Around the printhead's electrical contacts, FFC connectors, encoder components, or other sensitive areas, however, contamination can cause problems.

The bigger concern would be if a paper towel containing water, ink, cleaning solution, or another liquid contacted the printhead circuit board, FFC cable contacts, or electrical connectors. Those areas need to be completely clean and dry before the printer is powered.

If liquid reached the electrical connections, I would not immediately continue turning the printer on and off trying to clear the error. Instead, inspect the area carefully and allow any potentially wet components to dry completely.

Also avoid aggressively wiping the printhead's electrical contacts or delicate nozzle surface with a rough paper towel. These parts are much more sensitive than the plastic or metal structural components surrounding them.

Inspect Both Ends of the Ribbon Cables

One thing that can be overlooked is the other end of the FFC cable.

During printhead removal, pulling or moving the cable near the carriage can sometimes loosen its connection elsewhere. So even if the printhead end looks correct, trace the cable as far as practical and inspect the corresponding connection on the carriage electronics.

Pay particular attention to anything you moved during the repair. If the printer worked normally before the printhead was removed and generated the error immediately afterward, I would focus first on components that were touched or disturbed rather than assuming an unrelated component suddenly failed.

Look for a Damaged FFC Cable

FFC cables can be more fragile than they appear. A cable can develop internal damage from:

  • A very sharp fold.

  • Repeated bending in the same spot.

  • Pulling on the cable rather than its reinforced end.

  • Scraping the conductive traces.

  • Pinching it underneath the printhead or carriage cover.

  • Damaging the exposed contact fingers during insertion.

A damaged ribbon cable may still look mostly normal from a distance. Use good lighting and examine both sides carefully.

If you have removed and reinstalled the printhead several times and the 31004 error remains unchanged, replacing a visibly questionable FFC cable may be worth considering before assuming that the replacement printhead itself is defective.

Make Sure the Replacement Printhead Is Correct

If you installed a different printhead rather than simply removing and reinstalling the original one, the replacement head also becomes part of the diagnosis.

Verify that the printhead is actually intended for the Epson ET-8550 and that the electrical configuration matches the original head. A physically similar printhead is not necessarily electronically interchangeable.

If possible, compare the original and replacement heads side by side, including the connectors and any identification markings.

Be Careful About Repeated Power-On Testing

If an FFC cable is installed incorrectly, repeatedly powering up the printer is not necessarily a good diagnostic strategy.

First inspect and correct the physical connections. A misaligned ribbon cable can place electrical contacts where they do not belong. In some printer designs, an electrical short in the printhead circuit can damage a protection component or the printer's electronics. Disconnect the printer from power and carefully inspect the printhead area again. Concentrate on the FFC cables, their orientation, their insertion depth, and whether the connectors are locked properly. Make sure all electrical contacts are clean and completely dry. Also verify that the printhead itself is sitting correctly and that no cable was trapped or pulled while you reassembled the carriage.
