Epson ET-8550 Error 031004 and 031006 After Printhead Cleaning: FFC Cable, Printhead, Fuse, and Mainboard Diagnosis

Question

I have an Epson EcoTank ET-8550 that developed error 031004 after I cleaned the printhead and reassembled the printer. I removed the printhead and installed it again, and the 031004 error disappeared. However, when I sent a print job, the printer suddenly shut off, including the screen.

After turning it off, I tried to power it back on, but for about five minutes it would not turn on at all. Eventually, it powered up again, but now it displays error 031006.

Could this be caused by a blown fuse, a damaged FFC ribbon cable, or a bad printhead? Is it possible that the mainboard was also damaged? Would it be better to send the printer to BCH Technologies for repair, and approximately how much would the repair cost?

Understanding Error 031004

On Epson printers in this family, error 031004 is associated with the printhead temperature-monitoring/electrical system. Service information for Epson platforms identifies possible causes such as an improperly connected or damaged head FFC cable, a printhead temperature-sensing problem, a printhead failure, or a mainboard-related problem.

Because your 031004 appeared immediately after cleaning and reinstalling the printhead, I would pay particularly close attention to anything that changed during that procedure.

The FFC ribbon cable may not have been fully inserted, it could have been inserted slightly crooked, one or more contacts could have become contaminated, or cleaning liquid could have reached the printhead connector or cable contacts. The FFC can also develop a tiny crease, damaged conductor, worn contact, or burned contact that is difficult to see without close inspection.

The fact that 031004 disappeared after you removed and reinstalled the printhead is useful information. It suggests that the head connection may have been involved. However, it does not prove that the problem was permanently corrected. A marginal FFC connection can work temporarily and then fail again once the printer begins driving the printhead during an actual print job.

An internal problem with the printhead itself is another possibility. The printhead contains temperature-sensing and electrical components, so a failure inside the head can generate an error even when the cable appears normal.

Why Error 031006 Is More Concerning

The later 031006 error concerns me more.

Epson service information identifies 031006 as a printhead fuse/power-source fault, with possible causes including the head FFC, a blown mainboard fuse, printhead failure, and failure of the printhead drive circuitry on the mainboard.

That fits reasonably well with the sequence you described: you worked around the printhead, initially received 031004, reseated the printhead, sent a print job, and then the entire printer shut down. Afterward, the printer temporarily would not power up and eventually returned with 031006.

That sequence makes an electrical fault much more likely than a simple nozzle clog or ordinary ink-flow problem.

If cleaning solution or moisture reached the printhead electronics or FFC contacts, it could create leakage or a short between conductors. A damaged or misaligned FFC can cause a similar condition. A printhead that has developed an internal electrical short can place excessive load on the head-drive circuit. In some cases, the protective fuse on the mainboard opens; in other cases, components in the head-drive circuitry can also be damaged.

This is why I would not assume that replacing only the fuse, only the FFC cable, or only the printhead will necessarily repair the printer.

What I Would Be Concerned About in Your Printer

Based on the symptoms you described, these are the main areas I would want inspected before additional parts are installed:

  1. Printhead FFC ribbon cable and connectors: Inspect both ends for crooked insertion, torn conductors, creases, corrosion, cleaning-fluid residue, darkened contacts, or burned contacts. The connectors on both the printhead and mainboard side should also be examined carefully.

  2. Printhead: The head may have developed an internal electrical failure. This becomes more likely when 031006 follows printhead removal, cleaning, or flushing.

  3. Mainboard printhead power fuse: A fuse may have opened because the head circuit experienced excessive current. However, a blown fuse is often a symptom rather than the original cause.

  4. Mainboard head-drive circuit: If the short was severe enough, damage may extend beyond the fuse into the circuitry responsible for supplying and controlling power to the printhead.

  5. Residual cleaning fluid or moisture: Any liquid around the head's electrical contacts, FFC sockets, or cable should be taken seriously. Epson service documentation for other printers using this diagnostic family specifically lists liquid leakage around the head FFC as a possible contributor to 031006-type failures.

I Would Avoid Repeatedly Powering the Printer On

At this stage, I would not repeatedly turn the printer on to see whether the error disappears.

You have already progressed from 031004 to a shutdown and then 031006, so additional power cycles are unlikely to solve the underlying problem if there is an electrical short.

I would also be cautious about immediately installing a brand-new printhead.

For example, suppose the original printhead shorted and damaged the mainboard. Installing a new head onto a damaged head-drive circuit can expose the new printhead to a faulty electrical condition. Conversely, if the mainboard is repaired but the original shorted printhead is reconnected, that head can potentially damage the repaired board again.

That is why, with this particular combination of symptoms, it is important to evaluate the printhead, FFC cable, fuse, and mainboard as one system rather than replacing parts randomly.

Simply replacing a blown fuse without identifying why it blew can also result in the replacement fuse failing again.

Could the FFC Cable Alone Cause Both Errors?

Yes, it is possible.

An FFC cable that is crooked, partially inserted, contaminated, damaged, or shorting between conductors can interfere with printhead temperature sensing and printhead power delivery. That means the FFC should definitely be inspected.

However, because the printer actually shut down during a print job and later reported 031006, I would not stop the diagnosis after finding a suspicious cable. I would also check whether the printhead or mainboard has been electrically damaged.

Replacing the FFC is relatively straightforward compared with replacing a printhead or mainboard, but a new FFC should not be treated as proof that the other components are healthy.

Could the Mainboard Fuse Be Blown?

Yes. That is one of the possibilities associated with 031006. Service references describe 031006 specifically in connection with loss of the printhead power supply and a blown printhead fuse.

However, the important question is not only whether the fuse is blown, but why it blew.

A fuse normally opens to protect the circuit from an abnormal current condition. If a shorted printhead, contaminated FFC, incorrectly inserted cable, or failed mainboard component caused that overcurrent, simply restoring the fuse without correcting the cause can lead to another failure.

For this reason, I would want the circuit checked before assuming a fuse replacement alone will repair the printer.

Could Cleaning the Printhead Have Triggered the Problem?

Unfortunately, yes, although that does not necessarily mean that the cleaning procedure itself was mechanically incorrect.

Printhead cleaning becomes risky when liquid reaches areas that are intended to remain electrically dry. The nozzle surface is designed to interact with ink, but the electronic contacts, FFC connections, and circuitry on and around the head are a different matter.

Even a small amount of cleaning solution trapped in a connector can become a problem when power is applied. Some liquids also leave conductive residue behind after the visible moisture has evaporated.

That is one reason I recommend being extremely cautious about powering a printer after liquid has been near the printhead electronics.

Why the Printer Would Not Turn On for Several Minutes

The fact that the printer completely shut down and then temporarily would not turn back on is another reason I would treat this as an electrical problem.

It does not tell us exactly which component failed, but combined with 031006, it raises concern that the printer's power or head-drive circuitry encountered an abnormal load during the print job.

The later return of power does not necessarily mean that the electrical problem repaired itself. The printer can power on while still detecting a fault in the printhead power circuit, which is consistent with the 031006 message you are now seeing.
