Epson ET-8550 Error 000043 After a White-Ink Spill: False Paper Jam, Sensor Contamination, and Carriage Checks

I converted an Epson ET-8550 for DTF printing and recently experienced a white-ink clog. While cleaning the printhead and dampers for the first time, I accidentally spilled some ink inside the left side of the printer. After reinstalling everything, I attempted to prime the dampers by running a Power Cleaning, but the printer displayed error code 000043, even though I cannot find any jammed paper. What may have caused this error, and what should I inspect?

The timing of this problem is significant. The Epson ET-8550 began displaying error code 000043 after ink was spilled inside the left side of the printer, the printhead and dampers were reinstalled, and a Power Cleaning was started. Therefore, I would not assume that this is an ordinary paper jam.

The printer may use a general jam or service-required message when it cannot complete a mechanical movement or receive an expected signal from one of its sensors. Epson's public documentation instructs users to inspect the applicable paper path when a jam message appears, but an internal numerical service code can involve a more specific mechanical or sensor-related condition.

What Error Code 000043 May Mean in This Situation

Error code 000043 is commonly associated with a failure involving movement, positioning, or detection inside the printer. The printer may interpret the abnormal condition as a paper jam even when no sheet of paper is physically stuck.

Possible causes in your situation include:

  • Ink contamination on an optical sensor

  • Ink on the carriage encoder strip

  • A damaged or disconnected sensor cable

  • Resistance preventing the carriage from moving normally

  • Incorrectly routed DTF ink tubes

  • A damper, tube, or fitting interfering with carriage movement

  • A foreign object inside the carriage path

  • A printhead cable that was not reinstalled correctly

  • A disconnected component near the left side of the printer

  • A page-width or paper-detection sensor that is dirty or obstructed

  • Ink contamination on an electrical connector or circuit board

The fact that the code appeared during Power Cleaning does not necessarily mean that the cleaning command caused the failure. Power Cleaning moves ink aggressively through the system and may also operate the carriage, capping station, pump, and related mechanisms. That activity may have revealed a problem created during cleaning or reassembly.

Stop Running Power Cleaning for Now

Do not run another Power Cleaning until the cause of error 000043 has been identified.

Repeated Power Cleaning will not correct a contaminated sensor, pinched tube, disconnected cable, or mechanical obstruction. It can also consume a large amount of ink, fill the waste-ink system, introduce additional air into the dampers, and create more leakage if a tube or damper is not seated correctly.

Power Cleaning should only be used after confirming that:

  • The ink tubes are correctly routed

  • The dampers are properly installed

  • The printhead carriage moves freely

  • The capping station is aligned correctly

  • No ink is leaking

  • All relevant cables and connectors are secure

Disconnect the Printer and Inspect the Ink Spill

Turn the printer off and disconnect the power cord before inspecting the affected area. Do not continue switching the printer on repeatedly while liquid ink may still be present.

Because the spill occurred on the left side, inspect that area carefully with a flashlight. Look for wet ink, dried white pigment, loose parts, displaced cables, and ink that may have traveled beneath a cover.

White DTF ink is especially troublesome because it contains a heavy concentration of pigment. Once it dries, it can leave a chalky or adhesive deposit that interferes with moving parts and optical sensors.

Ink may also spread farther than the visible spill location. It can run along:

  • Plastic channels

  • Cable surfaces

  • Metal brackets

  • The printer frame

  • Flat-flex cables

  • Wire harnesses

  • The carriage rail

  • The encoder strip

  • The underside of the carriage

  • Sensor openings

Do not assume the problem is resolved simply because the visible puddle has been wiped away.

Check the Carriage Encoder Strip

One of the first components to inspect is the carriage encoder strip, sometimes called the CR encoder strip or timing strip. This is the thin, transparent strip running horizontally behind or through the printhead carriage.

The printer reads extremely fine markings on this strip to determine the carriage's location and speed. If the strip becomes covered with ink, fingerprints, grease, or white-pigment residue, the printer may lose track of the carriage position.

Possible symptoms of a contaminated encoder strip include:

  • False paper-jam messages

  • Error code 000043

  • Sudden carriage stops

  • Carriage movement in the wrong direction

  • Grinding or impact noises

  • The carriage striking one side of the printer

  • Printing in the wrong horizontal position

  • Failure during initialization or cleaning

Inspect both sides of the strip. White ink may be difficult to see against printer components, so use angled lighting.

If cleaning is necessary, handle the strip very gently. Do not pull it, twist it, scratch it, or remove its tension. Use a lint-free material lightly moistened with a suitable cleaner, and support the strip while wiping it. Do not use enough liquid to drip into the printer.

The encoder strip must pass correctly through the carriage's encoder sensor. If it slipped out of the sensor slot while you were handling the printhead, the printer may not be able to detect the carriage position even if the strip itself is clean.

Inspect the Carriage Path for Interference

Move the carriage only when the printer is unplugged and the locking mechanism has been released safely. Do not force it.

The carriage should move smoothly across its normal path without binding. Check whether any of the following are interfering with it:

  • DTF ink tubes

  • A circulation tube

  • A drag chain

  • A loose damper

  • A damper-retaining bracket

  • A cable

  • A cable clip

  • A screw

  • A dropped tool

  • Dried ink

  • A displaced cover

  • The printhead ribbon cables

  • A tube connector or zip tie

A tube may appear properly installed while the carriage is parked, but it can become tight or catch on the printer frame when the carriage travels farther across the machine.

Move the carriage slowly from side to side and watch the entire tube system. The tubes should follow the carriage without becoming stretched, folded, pinched, or pulled downward.

Check the Left-Side Carriage Area

Because ink was spilled on the left side, pay particular attention to the area where the carriage approaches its leftmost travel position.

Check whether dried ink or a displaced object is preventing the carriage from reaching the expected position. Even a small amount of resistance can make the printer report a jam-related error if the carriage does not arrive at the expected location within the programmed time.

Also inspect:

  • The carriage rail

  • The carriage belt

  • The belt pulleys

  • The encoder-strip mounting points

  • The left frame opening

  • Nearby wire harnesses

  • Any sensor flags or levers

  • The path used by the DTF tubes

Do not lubricate the encoder strip or belt. Lubricant on either component can cause additional tracking and positioning problems.

Inspect the Page-Width Sensor and Carriage Sensors

The ET-8550 uses optical sensors to monitor paper, carriage movement, and other positions. A sensor can be blocked by dried ink even when no paper is present.

One relevant component is the page-width sensor, commonly called the PW sensor. This sensor is associated with the carriage assembly and helps the printer detect paper-related conditions. Contamination, damage, misalignment, or a disconnected sensor can contribute to false paper-jam behavior. BCH Technologies has previously documented cases in which ET-8550 jam symptoms were caused by sensors rather than an actual sheet of paper.

Look for ink residue around the underside of the carriage and any small optical openings. Do not insert tools deeply into a sensor opening, as the internal parts can be scratched or displaced.

If the ink spill reached a sensor circuit board or connector, the component may need to be removed, cleaned, dried, tested, or replaced.

Recheck the Printhead Ribbon Cables

Since the printhead was removed or handled, inspect the printhead flat-flex cables, commonly called FFC cables.

Check that:

  • Each cable is inserted fully

  • The cable is straight inside the connector

  • The contact side faces the correct direction

  • The cables are installed in their original sockets

  • No locking tab is broken or left open

  • No contact is folded

  • No cable trace is torn

  • No ink is present on the contacts

  • No cable is trapped beneath a cover or bracket

A partially inserted cable can create an electrical problem even when the printer still turns on and moves the carriage. Ink contamination on a cable can also short adjacent contacts.

If ink is visible on an electrical connector, do not reconnect power until the affected parts have been properly cleaned and completely dried. Energizing a wet connector can damage the printhead, mainboard, fuse, or printhead driver circuit.

Check for a Damper or Printhead Installation Problem

Verify that the printhead is seated correctly and that nothing is protruding from the carriage.

Check whether:

  • The printhead is flat in its mounting position

  • All screws are installed in their correct locations

  • No screw is overtightened or cross-threaded

  • The dampers are fully seated

  • The damper bracket is installed correctly

  • No damper is leaning upward

  • No tube is pushing against a cover

  • No ink has leaked around a printhead inlet

  • The manifold is aligned correctly

A damper or bracket that sits too high may contact another part of the printer as the carriage moves. This can stop the carriage and trigger error 000043.

Inspect the Paper Path Even If No Paper Is Visible

Although this problem began after ink-system work, it is still sensible to inspect the complete paper path.

Remove the paper cassettes and rear cover or duplexer, then look for:

  • Torn paper fragments

  • DTF film scraps

  • Adhesive material

  • Powder residue

  • Labels

  • Foreign objects

  • Displaced sensor levers

  • Ink-contaminated rollers

  • A sensor flag that does not return to position

Epson's official instructions recommend checking the applicable paper path and rear-cover area carefully when the printer reports a jam.

A very small film fragment can be difficult to see. Use a flashlight and examine the printer from several angles rather than looking only through the top opening.

Determine When Error 000043 Appears

The exact point at which 000043 occurs can help narrow the problem.

If the error appears immediately after power-on, possible causes include:

  • A blocked carriage

  • A contaminated encoder strip

  • An encoder strip outside the sensor

  • A disconnected carriage sensor

  • An electrical problem caused by ink contamination

If it appears when the carriage moves toward the left, inspect the left carriage path, tubes, encoder strip, belt, and nearby sensors.

If it appears when the carriage parks on the right, inspect the capping station, wiper, pump mechanism, and tube routing.

If it appears only during Power Cleaning, inspect the capping station movement, pump, printhead seating, ink tubes, and waste lines. A tube or cable may be pulled into the carriage path only during the cleaning sequence.

If it appears when paper begins feeding, inspect the paper sensors, pickup system, duplexer, rear path, and page-width sensor.

Do Not Reset the Error Without Finding the Cause

A reset or adjustment program may temporarily clear a stored message, but it will not repair a contaminated sensor, pinched tube, damaged cable, or obstructed carriage.

Error 000043 should not be treated as a maintenance-counter warning. If the printer repeatedly detects the same mechanical or sensor condition, the code will return after a reset.

Similarly, avoid forcing the carriage or repeatedly restarting the printer. If a tube, cable, or foreign object is obstructing the carriage, repeated operation can damage:

  • The carriage motor

  • The timing belt

  • The encoder strip

  • The sensor

  • The printhead cables

  • The DTF tube system

  • The printer frame

Most Likely Areas to Check First

Based on the sequence of events, I would concentrate on the following areas before considering a motherboard failure:

  1. Ink on or near the carriage encoder strip

  2. The encoder strip no longer passing correctly through the carriage sensor

  3. DTF tubing interfering with the carriage

  4. Ink contamination around the PW sensor or another optical sensor

  5. A printhead FFC cable that is loose, crooked, or contaminated

  6. A damper or bracket installed too high

  7. Dried white ink obstructing the carriage path

  8. Ink that reached an electrical connector or sensor board

The printer should remain unplugged until the spilled ink has been located and the electrical areas are confirmed to be clean and dry.
