Epson ET-8550 DTF Error 031006 After Printhead Cleaning: Mainboard Fuse and Printhead Troubleshooting

I converted my Epson ET-8550 to DTF, and it worked fine for a while. Then the printer suddenly started showing the 031006 error code, and now it will not operate.
I removed the mainboard and am planning to send it to BCH Technologies for repair. I also want to mention that I made a rookie mistake: I cleaned the printhead while the carriage was positioned on the left side of the printer.
Could cleaning the printhead in that position have caused a short and blown the fuse on the mainboard? Should I also be looking at the printhead or another component before reinstalling the repaired motherboard?

What Does Epson ET-8550 Error 031006 Mean?
Based on the symptoms you described, the first thing I would expect is a blown fuse in the mainboard's printhead circuit. The 031006 error code on an ET-8550 displaying this type of failure is strongly associated with an electrical problem involving the printhead circuit rather than an ordinary clog, ink-flow problem, or mechanical paper-feed issue.
With this kind of failure, however, it is important to distinguish between the failed component and the component that caused it to fail.
The mainboard fuse may be blown, but the fuse does not necessarily blow by itself. Something downstream may have created an electrical short or excessive current condition. Therefore, repairing or replacing only the mainboard without investigating the printhead and its electrical connections can potentially result in the repaired board being damaged again.
Could Cleaning the Printhead on the Left Side Have Blown the Mainboard Fuse?
Yes, it is possible.
The position of the carriage itself is not necessarily what damages the mainboard. The greater concern is what happened electrically while the printhead was being cleaned.
During manual printhead cleaning, cleaning solution or ink can accidentally reach areas that normally should remain completely dry. This can include:

The printhead's electrical contacts

The printhead circuit board
-
The FFC/ribbon cable connections
-
The exposed ends of the ribbon cables
-
Connectors between the printhead and mainboard
-
Other electrical components around the carriage
Cleaning solution is especially problematic because even a very small amount can bridge contacts that operate at different voltages.
If the printer is powered on-or sometimes even if it was recently powered off and portions of the circuitry remain charged-a contaminated printhead connector or ribbon cable can create a short circuit. That short can travel back through the printhead driver circuit and cause a protective fuse on the mainboard to open.

Do Not Assume the Mainboard Fuse Is the Only Problem
This is the most important point in your situation.
Yes, I would expect the mainboard fuse to be blown. However, I would absolutely check the printhead as well.
Think of the fuse as the victim rather than automatically assuming it was the original cause.
For example, the sequence could have been:
Cleaning fluid reaches printhead electronics → printhead or cable shorts → excessive current reaches mainboard → mainboard fuse blows → printer reports 031006 and stops operating.
If that is what happened, replacing the fuse may restore the mainboard electrically, but connecting the same shorted printhead to it can immediately blow the fuse again or damage other components on the repaired board.
That is why I would not simply reinstall a repaired motherboard and immediately turn the printer on without checking the rest of the printhead circuit.
Check the Printhead Carefully
Before putting a repaired mainboard back into the printer, carefully inspect the printhead assembly.
Pay particular attention to signs of ink or cleaning solution around the electrical portion of the head. Look for liquid residue, corrosion, darkened contacts, discoloration, burned areas, or anything unusual around the ribbon cable connectors.
The printhead consists of more than the nozzle plate that you normally clean. The lower portion of the head is designed to be exposed to ink, but the electronics above it are not.
A printhead can therefore look perfectly normal from underneath while still having an electrical short internally.
If cleaning solution was pushed aggressively through the printhead, sprayed upward around the head, or allowed to migrate into the electrical connection area, I would be especially suspicious of printhead damage.
Inspect the Printhead Ribbon Cables
The printhead FFC/ribbon cables should also be inspected very carefully.
These cables carry electrical signals between the mainboard and printhead, and their exposed contact ends are sensitive. Look for:

Ink contamination

Cleaning-fluid residue
-
Burned contacts
-
Black marks
-
Corrosion
-
Bent contact traces
-
Torn or cracked cable material
-
Cables inserted at an angle
-
Cables inserted into the wrong connector
-
Cables installed backward
-
Damaged connector locking tabs
This becomes particularly important after disassembling the ET-8550 to remove its mainboard.
A ribbon cable that is inserted crooked can potentially bridge neighboring contacts. The printer should never be powered while a printhead cable is partially connected or being removed or installed.
Make Sure Everything Is Completely Dry
If there is any possibility that cleaning solution reached the printhead electronics or cable connectors, do not rush to reconnect the repaired board.
The visible liquid may evaporate while residue remains between contacts or underneath components. Some cleaning solutions also contain ingredients that can leave conductive or partially conductive residue behind.
Therefore, simply seeing that the outside of the printhead is dry does not guarantee that the electronics are safe.
This is one reason printhead cleaning should ideally concentrate on the ink-side components and nozzle surface without allowing cleaning solution to migrate upward toward the electrical connectors.
The Printhead Itself May Be Electrically Shorted
This is the component I would be particularly concerned about in your case.
A printhead is an electrical device. Internally, it contains a large number of actuator circuits controlled by the printer's mainboard. If one of those circuits becomes electrically shorted, the head can draw abnormal current.
A damaged printhead can therefore be responsible for repeatedly damaging a mainboard.
This creates a frustrating situation where someone repairs the board, puts it back into the printer, turns the printer on, and immediately gets another failure. They may then assume the board repair was unsuccessful when the real problem was that the original printhead destroyed the repaired circuit again.
For that reason, checking the printhead before reconnecting a repaired mainboard is extremely important after an error such as 031006.
Mainboard Fuse Failure Can Be a Symptom, Not the Root Cause
If the fuse has blown, replacing it can restore continuity in that circuit, but a fuse is a protective device. When it opens, there is often a reason.
Possible causes worth considering include:

An electrically damaged printhead

Cleaning solution reaching printhead electronics

Ink contamination on printhead contacts
-
Contaminated FFC/ribbon cable contacts
-
A damaged or incorrectly installed printhead cable

A short in the printhead wiring

Damage to the mainboard's printhead driver circuitry

Accidental electrical contact during servicing
In more severe cases, a short can damage more than the fuse. Driver components on the mainboard may also be affected.
That is why diagnosing a printhead-related electrical failure should not stop at finding an open fuse.
Be Especially Careful When the Mainboard Comes Back
Once the mainboard has been repaired, resist the temptation to immediately connect everything and turn on the ET-8550 just to see whether the 031006 error has disappeared.
First inspect the printhead, cables, and connectors.
If the printhead has a confirmed electrical fault, replacing or repairing the board while continuing to use that head may put the repaired mainboard at risk.
Likewise, if you find contamination on a ribbon cable, do not simply wipe the visible portion and assume everything is fine. Inspect both ends and the corresponding connectors.
Whenever working around these components, the printer should be disconnected from power before connecting or disconnecting internal cables.
What I Would Suspect Based on Your Description
Given that the ET-8550 was operating normally after the DTF conversion, then developed error 031006, combined with the fact that the printhead had recently been manually cleaned, a blown mainboard fuse is a very strong suspect.
However, I would not consider the diagnosis complete after finding the blown fuse.
I would also consider the printhead a major suspect.
If cleaning solution reached the electrical area of the printhead, it is entirely possible for a head-related short to have caused the board failure. Checking the printhead and its FFC cables before putting a repaired mainboard back into service can help prevent a repeat failure.
