I'm following your Pro-Level Epson ET-8550 DTF Conversion: Modify the Printhead - Complete Course (Part 2) video and want to make sure I understand which parts are required.

For my ET-8550 conversion, do I basically need the nipple base, the modified printhead cover, and the dampers while keeping the original OEM printhead cables? I have watched several different ET-8550 conversion videos, and I think I may have mixed together information from different versions of the conversion.

Is there anything else I need, and should I still be using the V2 dampers?

The important part is handling them extremely carefully during the conversion.

The flat-flex cables used around the ET-8550 printhead are delicate. Problems can occur if a cable is:

The damper is more than a small ink container. It sits between the ink-delivery system and the printhead and helps regulate the supply of ink. An inappropriate damper setup can contribute to symptoms such as:

  • Nozzles disappearing after printing begins

  • Good nozzle checks followed by ink starvation

  • Large air bubbles

  • Dampers that repeatedly empty

  • Difficulty pulling ink through the system

  • Ink leaking around connections

  • Excessive restriction

  • Inconsistent white-ink delivery

This is why I would use the current V4 configuration if you are building the system now rather than purchasing older V2 components simply because they appeared in an earlier video.

Do You Need Anything Else?

For the specific printhead modification shown in that portion of the course, you have identified the major components correctly: nipple base, compatible printhead cover, the current damper configuration, and your existing OEM cables.

However, that should not be confused with a complete list of everything required to convert an ET-8550 into a functioning DTF printer.

A complete DTF conversion also involves the surrounding ink-delivery and maintenance system. Depending on how your printer is currently configured, you may also need appropriate ink tubing, connections, ink containers or tanks, white-ink management components, waste-ink arrangements, and other supporting conversion parts.

  • White-ink systems

  • Maintenance procedures

  • Routing methods

  • Priming procedures

Consequently, I recommend treating the videos as a progression of our development rather than assuming that every component shown in every video needs to be combined into one printer.

In other words, do not build a V2/V3/V4 hybrid conversion simply because you watched videos from all three generations.

Choose one compatible configuration and keep the associated components matched to that configuration.

One Important Precaution Before Powering the Printer Back On

After modifying the printhead, take your time before applying power.

Check the entire area around the printhead and make sure:

  • Both printhead cables are completely dry.

  • There is no ink on the cable contacts.

  • The cables are inserted correctly and completely.

  • Dampers are securely installed.

  • The nipple base is properly seated.

  • There are no visible leaks.

  • Tubing is not pinched.

  • Tubing can travel with the carriage.
