Epson ET-8550 Cassette 2 Gear Problem: Is It Safe to Turn the Printer Upside Down?

I have an Epson ET-8550, and Paper Cassette 2 is no longer working. I suspect there may be a problem with the gears underneath the printer. I was thinking about turning the printer upside down so I can inspect or repair the mechanism, but I just refilled all of the ink tanks. What is the safest way to handle the printer without spilling ink or causing additional damage?

First, I believe that when you say "cartridge 2," you are referring to Paper Cassette 2, the lower paper cassette on the Epson ET-8550. If Cassette 2 is not picking up paper, a gear, pickup mechanism, lever, shaft, or related paper-feed component can certainly be involved.

I Would Not Recommend Turning a Full ET-8550 Completely Upside Down

Because you have just refilled the OEM EcoTank reservoirs, I would avoid completely turning the ET-8550 upside down if possible.

Epson specifically advises keeping the ET-8550 level during transportation and warns against tilting the printer, placing it vertically, or turning it upside down because ink can leak.

This is an important correction to the idea that simply closing the ink tanks makes inversion completely safe. Closing everything properly certainly reduces the possibility of leakage, but it does not guarantee that a printer containing liquid ink can safely remain upside down.

What Should Be Closed Before Moving or Tilting the Printer?

If you have to reposition the printer temporarily for inspection, prepare it carefully first.

Turn the ET-8550 off normally and allow the printer to finish its shutdown sequence. You want the printhead carriage parked in its normal home position on the right side before unplugging the printer. Epson specifically cautions against unplugging the printer before the power light has gone out because the printhead may not return to its home position.

Next, make sure all six OEM ink tank caps are completely closed and then close the outer ink tank cover. If you are worried that a cap could accidentally open while the machine is being handled, you can temporarily secure the closed tank cover so it cannot flip open. Do not put adhesive where it can enter the tank opening or contact ink.

The ET-8550 also has a transportation lock near the printhead/carriage area. Before transporting the printer, Epson instructs users to place the printhead in its home position and move this lock into the transportation position.

However, the transportation lock should not be considered an "upside-down mode." Its purpose is to secure the printer's ink/head system during transportation. It does not eliminate the possibility of ink leaking when the printer is inverted.

If You Need Access to the Cassette 2 Gears

Before turning the whole printer over, I would first remove Cassette 2 and inspect everything that can be reached from the front and lower opening.

Remove all paper from both paper cassettes, then pull Cassette 2 completely out. Look carefully at the pickup mechanism and visible gears. On the ET-8550, a Cassette 2 feeding problem may involve more than one part.

Things worth checking include:

  • A pickup arm that is stuck in the raised or lowered position

  • A gear that has slipped out of engagement

  • Missing, worn, cracked, or stripped gear teeth

  • A plastic lever that is not returning to its normal position

  • A shaft that turns without transferring movement to the pickup roller

  • Paper scraps or foreign objects blocking the mechanism

  • A pickup roller that turns but does not lower onto the paper

  • A gear or coupling that is no longer engaging the main paper-feed mechanism

One useful diagnostic approach is to remove the cassette and carefully observe the pickup mechanism while manually examining the accessible gears. Do not force a gear if it does not want to rotate. Some gears are connected to motors, clutches, sensors, and other mechanisms, so forcing them can create additional damage.

If You Absolutely Must Reposition the Printer

If underside access is unavoidable, I would still avoid leaving the ET-8550 completely upside down, especially immediately after filling the tanks.

Prepare the printer as though you were transporting it: shut it down normally, unplug it only after shutdown is complete, close every ink tank cap securely, close the tank cover, put the transportation lock into the transport position, remove paper and loose accessories, and protect the work area against possible ink leakage.

Epson's official transportation procedure also recommends securing the printhead and keeping the printer level.

If you do move the transportation lock into the transport position, remember to return it to the printing position before using the printer again.

Do Not Depend on the Ink Tank Caps Alone

One reason I am cautious about turning an EcoTank printer upside down is that there is more liquid ink inside the printer than what you see in the external tanks. Ink can also be present in the internal ink-delivery system, dampers, tubing, printhead, capping station, waste-ink system, and other areas.

Therefore, even if every tank cap is closed, inversion can potentially move ink into areas where it normally would not travel.

This is especially important when the tanks have just been filled near their upper levels.

Before Disassembling the Gear System

If Cassette 2 stopped working suddenly, first try to determine exactly what the printer is doing.

For example, listen for whether the motor runs when the printer attempts to load paper. If you hear the motor and gears turning but the pickup roller never comes down, that points toward a mechanical engagement, lever, pickup-arm, or gear problem.

If you hear repeated clicking or grinding, inspect for damaged or partially engaged gears.

If there is no attempt to operate the cassette mechanism at all, the problem may not necessarily be a broken gear. A sensor, actuator, motor, electrical connection, or control issue could also be involved.

No specific Epson error code was included in your question, so the physical symptoms-whether the gears turn, whether the pickup arm moves, whether paper begins feeding, and whether there is clicking or grinding-will be especially useful when diagnosing this particular problem.

My Preferred Approach

With freshly filled OEM tanks, I would not turn the ET-8550 completely upside down just to inspect the Cassette 2 gears. I would first remove the cassette and inspect as much of the pickup and gear mechanism as possible while keeping the printer in its normal orientation.

If deeper disassembly becomes necessary, prepare the printer using the transportation precautions described above and minimize how much the printer is tilted. Closing the tank caps and engaging the transportation lock are good precautions, but neither makes complete inversion risk-free.
