Epson ET-8550 Black Ink Leaking Under the Printer: How to Identify Capping Station, Waste Ink, or Tank Leaks

I have noticed dark or black ink leaking from underneath my Epson EcoTank ET-8550, mainly below the capping-station and ink-tank area. I cannot determine whether the leak is coming from the capping station, one of the ink tanks, or another internal component.

The liquid looks black, although it may be a mixture of all the ink colors coming from the cleaning system. The printer is still printing normally, but I am concerned that the leaking ink could eventually reach the electronics, blow a fuse, or cause another failure.

Because the ink is appearing underneath the capping-station and ink-tank area, the first objective is to determine where the first fresh drop appears. Ink spreads easily across the printer's bottom frame, so the location where you eventually see it may not be the location where the leak began.

Start by turning off and unplugging the printer. Carefully clean and dry the exterior bottom surface and the area where the printer normally sits. Do not tilt the printer aggressively, because doing so can move waste ink into areas that were previously dry. Place the printer on clean white paper, absorbent pads, or several layers of white paper towels. White material makes it easier to see the color, position, and direction of the first new stain.
