Epson ET-8500/ET-8550 Transportation Lock Error After Printhead Replacement: Causes and Troubleshooting

Question
I replaced the printhead on my Epson ET-8500/ET-8550 by following the "Remove & Replace Epson ET-8500 ET-8550 Printhead - The SAFE Way to Do It!" video. After the replacement, however, the printer keeps reporting that the transportation lock is on even though the lock is actually in the unlocked position.
Is there a transportation-lock switch or sensor somewhere inside the printer that I should check?

The Transportation Lock Message Does Not Necessarily Mean the Lock Switch Is Bad
The most important thing to understand is that, on an Epson ET-8500 or ET-8550, a transportation-lock warning does not necessarily mean there is a defective transportation-lock switch.
The printer can interpret a carriage movement problem as a transportation-lock condition.
During startup, the printer expects the printhead carriage to move through a specific sequence. If the carriage cannot move beyond roughly the first couple of inches of the rail, the printer may conclude that something is physically preventing the carriage from moving. One of the conditions that could normally cause that restriction is an engaged transportation lock, so the printer may report the transportation-lock warning even when the actual lock is already released.
Therefore, rather than concentrating only on finding a transportation-lock switch, I would troubleshoot the printer according to this logic:
Why is the printhead carriage unable to travel normally during initialization?
That is much more likely to lead you to the actual problem.
Watch the Carriage Carefully During Startup
The first diagnostic step is to observe exactly what the printhead carriage does when the printer powers on.
If it moves slightly and then stops, shakes, jerks, returns to the right side, or cannot travel past the first approximately two inches of the carriage rail, that movement is an important clue.
The printer's firmware is expecting the carriage to leave its home position and travel far enough for the carriage-positioning system to verify its location. When that sequence fails, the printer may report the transportation-lock condition even though the mechanical transportation lock itself is not engaged.
If the printer displays a transportation-lock-related error code, including 000023 on some Epson fault conditions, the displayed code or message should be considered together with the actual carriage behavior. The message alone does not prove that the physical transportation-lock mechanism is the defective component.
Check Whether the Carriage Is Mechanically Restricted
Because you recently replaced the printhead, I would first inspect everything that was disturbed during the replacement.
With the printer powered off and unplugged, determine whether the carriage is mechanically restricted. Do not force it. If it does not move normally, investigate what is preventing it from doing so.
Possible causes include:

A cover, bracket, or carriage component installed incorrectly

A printhead that is not fully seated in the carriage
-
Ink tubing positioned where it interferes with carriage movement
-
A cable or wire routed into the carriage's travel path
-
A ribbon cable folded, pinched, or positioned incorrectly
-
A carriage belt that is displaced or improperly tensioned
-
A foreign object or loose screw inside the carriage path
-
A capping-station mechanism that has not released the printhead correctly
-
A mechanical component around the right-side parking station remaining raised and holding the carriage
The timing of the problem matters. If the printer operated normally before the printhead replacement and immediately started showing the transportation-lock warning afterward, carefully rechecking the areas disturbed during the repair is especially important.
Inspect the Right-Side Capping and Parking Mechanism
The right side of the printer deserves particular attention.
When the printer is turned off, the printhead normally parks over the capping station. The capping station seals against the printhead and allows the cleaning system to draw ink through the nozzles. During initialization, that mechanism must move into the correct position so the carriage can leave the parking area.
If the capping platform remains raised, the carriage may not be able to move away from the right side.
This can look very similar to having the transportation lock engaged.
Look for signs that the printhead is physically caught at the parking station. If the carriage attempts to move but immediately stops or appears to rock against resistance, inspect the capping-station and carriage-locking mechanisms before assuming there is an electrical sensor failure.
Be especially careful not to force the carriage sideways while the capping station is raised. Doing so can damage the capping assembly, carriage, printhead surface, or drive mechanism.
Check the Ink Tubes After Printhead Installation
Ink tubing is another common area to inspect after replacing the printhead.
The ET-8500 and ET-8550 use tubing to deliver ink from the tank system to the printhead. These tubes must move with the carriage without becoming stretched, twisted, trapped, or caught.
If the tubing was disconnected or repositioned during the printhead replacement, verify that it follows its original routing and has enough freedom to move as the carriage travels.
A tube that catches after the carriage has moved only a short distance can create exactly the type of symptom you are describing. The carriage begins moving normally, reaches the point where the tubing becomes tight, and then cannot continue.
From the printer's perspective, the carriage has encountered an unexpected mechanical restriction, which can trigger a lock-related error.
Recheck the Printhead and FFC Ribbon Cables
The printhead's flat flexible cables, commonly called FFC or ribbon cables, should also be inspected carefully.
Make sure they are:

Fully inserted into their connectors
-
Straight and correctly aligned
-
Not folded in an unusual direction
-
Not pinched underneath a cover or carriage component
-
Not protruding into the carriage travel path
-
Free of ink, cleaning solution, corrosion, or damaged contacts
The ribbon cables need enough flexibility to accommodate carriage movement while remaining properly routed.
A cable that was accidentally positioned incorrectly during reassembly may physically prevent the carriage from traveling farther along the rail.
There is also an electrical reason to inspect these connections carefully. A damaged or incorrectly connected printhead cable can cause additional printer errors after printhead replacement. Therefore, if the transportation-lock message appeared immediately after the repair, both mechanical routing and electrical connections should be reviewed before replacing additional parts.
Inspect the Encoder Strip
The clear encoder strip running horizontally behind the carriage is another critical part of the carriage-positioning system.
The printer uses this strip to determine where the printhead carriage is located. A sensor mounted on the carriage reads the markings on the strip as the carriage moves.
During printhead or carriage work, the encoder strip can sometimes become:

Dislodged
-
Twisted
-
Pulled out of its mounting point
-
Positioned outside the carriage encoder sensor
-
Contaminated with ink or grease
If the carriage moves but the printer cannot correctly determine its position, initialization can fail.
Check that the encoder strip runs correctly through the carriage's encoder sensor and remains attached properly at both ends. Avoid scratching it or aggressively wiping it because its very fine markings are essential for accurate carriage positioning.
Check the Carriage Belt and CR Drive System
The carriage motor, commonly referred to as the CR motor, moves the printhead carriage through a toothed belt.
If the belt is loose, displaced, damaged, or incorrectly seated on the motor or pulley, the motor may turn without moving the carriage correctly.
Check for:

A belt that has come off its normal track
-
Missing or damaged belt teeth
-
Excessive slack
-
A belt trapped underneath another component
-
A carriage that is no longer properly engaged with the belt
-
An obstruction around the CR motor or pulley
If the carriage consistently stops at approximately the same location, examine that specific area for mechanical resistance.
Make Sure the Carriage Rail Is Not the Problem
The carriage should travel smoothly along the rail.
If the rail is contaminated, damaged, or unusually dry, the carriage may experience excessive resistance. However, I would not immediately add lubricant because using the wrong lubricant or applying too much can contaminate the encoder system and make the situation worse.
First determine whether there is an obvious physical obstruction or assembly issue resulting from the printhead replacement.
If the carriage moves freely across most of the printer but binds at one particular location, inspect that location closely.
Compare the Symptom With What Changed During the Repair
One of the best troubleshooting principles after any printer repair is to focus first on what changed.
Before the printhead replacement, the printer presumably did not have this transportation-lock problem. After the replacement, the problem appeared.
That makes the recently disturbed components the highest-priority suspects.
I would work backward through the printhead replacement process and inspect:

Printhead seating
-
Printhead retaining components
-
Ribbon cable installation
-
Ink tube routing
-
Carriage covers
-
Encoder strip positioning
-
Carriage belt engagement
-
Capping-station release
-
Anything removed or repositioned around the carriage
You may find that a very small installation detail is preventing the carriage from completing its startup movement.
Do Not Assume the Transportation Lock Sensor Needs Replacement
I would not begin by replacing a switch or sensor.
The important clue is whether the carriage can physically move beyond the first couple of inches during initialization. If it cannot, troubleshoot the carriage movement first.
In other words, the printer's logic may essentially be:
"The carriage cannot move where I expect it to move, so something must be locking it."
The transportation lock is one possible explanation from the printer's perspective, but it is not the only physical condition capable of producing that result.
Once the carriage can complete its expected startup travel, the transportation-lock warning may disappear without replacing any transportation-lock component.
Be Careful With Repeated Power-On Attempts
I would also avoid repeatedly powering the printer on while the carriage is obviously jammed.
If the carriage motor repeatedly attempts to drive a mechanically blocked carriage, unnecessary stress can be placed on the belt, gears, motor, capping station, and other carriage components.
If you can see that the carriage is hitting something or being held in place, disconnect the printer and locate the mechanical restriction before continuing startup tests.
