Epson ET-4950 Not Printing After Ink Fill? No Ink Flow Even After Cleaning - Causes & Fixes

Question:
I installed a new Epson EcoTank ET-4950 printer and printed a few pages before realizing I hadn't filled the ink tanks yet. After filling them, I can't get any ink to appear on printed pages. I've already tried printhead cleaning, alignment, and even a hard reset. My next step is a Power Ink Flush-but will that fix the problem, or just waste a lot of ink?
Answer:
Understanding the Issue
What you're experiencing is actually quite common with EcoTank printers like the Epson ET-4950. These printers rely on a primed ink delivery system, meaning ink must fully travel from the tanks through tubes, dampers, and into the printhead before printing can occur.
Since you initially printed without ink in the tanks, the system likely pulled in air instead of ink. Once air enters the ink lines, it creates a blockage that normal cleaning cycles often cannot resolve.
Will a Power Ink Flush Fix It?
A Power Ink Flush (also called Power Cleaning) can sometimes resolve this-but there are two important caveats:
-
It consumes a large amount of ink (often 20-30% of your tank).
-
It may NOT work if air is trapped deeper in the system, especially in the dampers or printhead.
So yes-it might help, but there's a significant chance it will just waste your initial ink fill without fully solving the issue.
Recommended Solution (More Effective)
Based on your symptoms, the most reliable fix is manually priming the ink system:
Step-by-step overview:
-
Open the printer casing to access the printhead assembly.
-
Locate and carefully remove the dampers (these sit on top of the printhead and regulate ink flow).
-
Using a syringe, gently pull (vacuum) ink through the damper:
-
This removes trapped air
-
Forces ink to fully fill the line and reach the printhead
-
-
Reinstall the dampers securely.
-
Run a standard cleaning cycle from the printer menu (not power flush).
This method directly addresses the root issue: air blockage in the ink delivery system.
Why This Works Better
-
Cleaning cycles rely on the printer's pump system, which is not strong enough to remove large air gaps
-
Manual suction ensures continuous ink flow is restored
-
Once primed, the printer can maintain flow normally
Common Mistakes to Avoid
-
Repeated cleaning cycles → wastes ink, may overheat printhead
-
Jumping straight to Power Ink Flush → high ink usage, uncertain results
-
Printing repeatedly with no ink output → can damage the printhead over time
About Error Codes
In your case, there are no specific Epson error codes mentioned (such as 0x97, 0xEA, etc.), which indicates this is likely a mechanical/priming issue rather than an electronic failure. That's good news-it's usually fixable.
Addressing printer issues can sometimes become quite complex due to the hands-on nature of the repair process. As much as we'd love to help remotely, we're not able to provide step-by-step troubleshooting or repair guidance beyond general advice. However, we do offer an in-person evaluation and repair service through our local diagnostic facility.
