Epson ET-4800 Error 031006: Causes, Printhead Fuse Problems, and Possible Fixes

I have an Epson EcoTank ET-4800 showing error code 031006. I found your video about fixing Epson EcoTank E-01 error 000032, but my printer displays 031006 instead. What does error 031006 mean, and how can I fix it?

The first important point is that error 031006 is different from error 000032. Therefore, the repair demonstrated in our video about E-01 000032 may not address the problem with your ET-4800.
What Does Epson Error 031006 Mean?
On Epson printers, 031006 generally indicates a printhead electrical circuit problem, often involving the printhead, its ribbon cables (FFC cables), or the printhead power/drive circuit on the mainboard. One possible result of an electrical short is a blown protective fuse on the mainboard.
This is considerably different from many mechanical errors involving paper jams, carriage movement, or gears.
The problem can originate from several areas:

A failed or electrically shorted printhead

Ink, cleaning solution, or moisture reaching the printhead electrical contacts

Contamination or damage on the printhead FFC ribbon cable
-
A ribbon cable that is crooked, partially inserted, or damaged
-
A blown mainboard fuse
-
Damage to the printhead driver circuitry on the mainboard

Damage caused while connecting or disconnecting the printhead cables with power present
If the 031006 error appeared shortly after printhead cleaning, printhead replacement, ribbon-cable work, or liquid was used around the printhead, I would pay particular attention to possible moisture or contamination around the printhead contacts and FFC cables.
Do Not Assume That Replacing a Fuse Alone Will Fix It
A blown fuse can be the result of another failure rather than the original problem.
For example, if the printhead has developed an internal electrical short and that short blows the mainboard fuse, replacing only the fuse may cause the replacement fuse to fail again. In a more serious situation, additional components on the mainboard could also be damaged.
For this reason, I would not recommend simply bridging or bypassing a fuse. The fuse is there to protect the circuit.
Inspect the Printhead Ribbon Cables
With the printer completely disconnected from power, inspect the FFC ribbon cables running between the printhead and mainboard.
Look closely for:

Ink or cleaning solution on the contacts
-
Burned or darkened contacts
-
Corrosion
-
Bent or folded cable ends
-
Torn conductive traces
-
A cable inserted at an angle
-
A cable that is not fully seated
-
Damage around the printhead connector
If liquid has reached these connections, reconnecting or powering the printer before everything is completely clean and dry can cause additional electrical damage.
Also, do not repeatedly turn the printer on while you suspect a printhead short. Each power-up can potentially place additional stress on the mainboard circuitry.
Check the Mainboard Fuse
If you have experience working with electronics, the next area to investigate is the mainboard.
Epson mainboards commonly contain small surface-mount fuses associated with the printhead circuit. Depending on the particular board design, they may have designations such as F1, F2, F3, F301, or another F-number. The exact designation and location should not be assumed to be identical across different Epson models or board revisions.
With the printer unplugged and the mainboard removed or electrically isolated as appropriate, a technician can test the relevant fuse for continuity with a multimeter.
If the fuse is open, that supports the possibility of an overcurrent or short-circuit condition in the printhead system.
However, finding a blown fuse does not automatically prove that the mainboard itself was the original cause. The printhead or its wiring may have caused the fuse to fail.
The Printhead May Need to Be Tested or Replaced
A defective printhead is one of the more serious possibilities with 031006.
Unfortunately, diagnosing a printhead electrically is not always straightforward with an ordinary multimeter. A printhead contains many internal piezoelectric elements and electrical circuits, and a failure may not be obvious from an external inspection.
If you know that liquid entered the electrical area of the head, or the error occurred immediately after work involving the printhead, the printhead should be treated as suspect.
Installing a repaired mainboard while leaving a shorted printhead connected can potentially damage the repaired board again. This is one of the reasons we recommend approaching this error as an electrical system problem rather than simply replacing whichever component appears damaged first.
The Mainboard Can Also Be Damaged Beyond the Fuse
Sometimes the protective fuse is the only mainboard component that fails. In other cases, the printhead driver circuit, MOSFETs, transistors, or other components can also be affected.
Therefore, if the fuse tests good but the printer continues to display 031006, possible areas include:

Printhead failure
-
FFC cable or connector failure
-
Mainboard printhead-driver failure
-
Intermittent contamination or electrical leakage around the head connection
Likewise, if a replacement fuse immediately opens again, stop powering the printer and investigate the underlying short before replacing additional components.
Error 031006 Is Not the Same as E-01 000032
Because you referenced our video about E-01 000032, I want to emphasize this distinction.
Even though both errors may cause the printer to stop operating, 031006 should not automatically be treated as a mechanical E-01 error. If your ET-4800 specifically reports 031006, I would concentrate first on the printhead electrical system, FFC cables, printhead condition, and mainboard rather than following a procedure intended specifically for 000032.
Also, record the exact error number before disassembling the printer. Epson codes that differ by only one or two digits can indicate very different systems, so the complete six-digit number is important.
