Epson ET-2850 Not Printing After Multiple Head Cleanings: Printhead Replacement vs. Better Cleaning Methods

My Epson ET-2850 will not print even after I have performed many printhead cleaning cycles. Does this mean the printhead needs to be replaced? Do you have a video showing how to replace the printhead on an ET-2850, or is there a better cleaning method I should try before replacing it?

Should the ET-2850 Printhead Be Replaced?

Not necessarily. If your Epson ET-2850 still does not print after several head-cleaning cycles, I would not immediately assume that the printhead itself has failed.

There are several different problems that can produce the same symptom:

  • Severely dried or clogged printhead nozzles

  • Air trapped in the ink-delivery system

  • Ink starvation between the tanks and printhead

  • A problem with the capping station or cleaning/pump system

  • Dried ink around the printhead's parking or sealing area

  • An electrical problem with the printhead, ribbon cables, or printer electronics

  • A physically damaged printhead

The first thing I would look at is the nozzle check pattern. It tells us much more than repeatedly running cleaning cycles.

If some colors print but have missing lines, you are probably dealing with clogged or ink-starved nozzles. If one entire color is missing, there may be a more significant blockage or an ink-delivery problem. If absolutely nothing prints on the nozzle check, the problem can be considerably more serious, although that still does not automatically prove that the printhead is defective.

Epson itself recommends using the nozzle-check pattern to determine whether normal Head Cleaning or the stronger Power Cleaning procedure is appropriate. Epson also advises that if there is no improvement after up to three normal head-cleaning cycles, the printer should be turned off and allowed to sit for at least 12 hours before trying again.

Avoid Performing Too Many Consecutive Head Cleanings

One important point is that repeatedly running normal cleaning cycles is usually not the best approach.

The cleaning cycle does not physically scrub the printhead. Instead, the printer uses its pump and capping system to pull ink through the head. If dried ink has created a severe blockage, running the same procedure over and over may consume a large amount of ink without removing the obstruction.

It can also place additional ink into the printer's waste-ink system.

So, if you have already performed many cleaning cycles with little or no change in the nozzle pattern, I would stop repeating them for the moment.

Try a Nozzle Check Before Doing Anything Else

From the printer's control panel, go to:

Maintenance → Nozzle Check

Print the pattern and examine it carefully.

If only a few lines are missing, normal Head Cleaning may still be appropriate. If most of the pattern is missing, Epson recommends moving to Power Cleaning rather than endlessly repeating the standard cleaning cycle.

Pay attention to whether the pattern improves from one test to another. Improvement is important. Even if the head is not completely clean, gradually returning lines suggest that ink is reaching the printhead and the blockage may still be recoverable.

If the nozzle pattern never changes at all, I would start considering an ink-delivery, pump/capping-station, or electrical problem rather than assuming that more software cleaning will solve it.

Power Cleaning May Be the Better Built-In Cleaning Method

The ET-2850 has a Power Cleaning function:

Maintenance → Power Cleaning

Power Cleaning is considerably more aggressive than the standard Head Cleaning procedure.

Before running it, visually check the ink tanks. Epson specifies that each tank should be at least one-third full before a Power Cleaning. Running the process with insufficient ink can cause problems, and Power Cleaning consumes substantially more ink than a normal cleaning cycle.

After completing the Power Cleaning, print another nozzle check.

If you are considering performing another Power Cleaning, do not immediately run them one after another. Epson instructs users to turn the ET-2850 off and wait at least 12 hours before another Power Cleaning.

That waiting period can also help when dried ink is involved because ink and cleaning activity sometimes soften a partial clog over time.

What If Power Cleaning Still Does Not Work?

At that stage, I would separate the problem into two broad possibilities.

The printhead is clogged but electrically functional.

In this situation, a more involved manual cleaning may sometimes restore the head. The important word here is careful. Trying to force cleaning solution through an Epson printhead with excessive syringe pressure can permanently damage the internal nozzle plate, membranes, seals, or other components.

For a stubborn clog, technicians may work with the printhead's capping station and an appropriate printhead-cleaning solution to soften dried ink rather than immediately forcing liquid through the nozzles.

The capping station is the rubber sealing assembly underneath the printhead when the carriage is parked. If that area is heavily contaminated with dried ink or cannot seal properly, the printer may be unable to generate the suction required during automatic cleaning. In that case, you can perform cleaning cycles all day without solving the underlying problem.

The other possibility is that this is not actually a clog.

For example, if the printhead is receiving ink but produces absolutely nothing, the head's electronics, its flexible flat cables, the mainboard, or another component may be involved. Replacing a printhead will not fix a failed cable or mainboard circuit, so diagnosis before purchasing a replacement head is worthwhile.

Be Careful With Syringe Cleaning

There are many online demonstrations involving syringes attached directly to a printhead's ink ports. This can work in certain circumstances, but it also carries significant risk.

Epson printheads contain extremely small internal ink passages. Applying too much pressure can damage those internal structures. Cleaning fluid can also reach electrical contacts or the printhead circuit board, creating a problem that did not exist before.

If you attempt manual cleaning, think in terms of softening and dissolving the dried ink, not blasting the blockage out with pressure.

I would especially avoid forcing large amounts of fluid backward or forward through a printhead simply because nothing comes out initially.

Should You Eventually Replace the ET-2850 Printhead?

Printhead replacement becomes a more reasonable possibility when:

  • Ink delivery to the head has been confirmed.

  • The capping and pump system is working.

  • Proper cleaning procedures have produced no improvement.

  • The ribbon cables and connections have been inspected.

  • The head remains completely or substantially nonfunctional.

  • There is evidence of electrical or physical printhead failure.

Replacing the ET-2850 printhead is considerably more involved than changing an ink cartridge. The printer must be disassembled, the carriage and cables handled carefully, and the ink system must be properly restored afterward.

Because the replacement printhead itself can be expensive, I would try to determine whether the problem is truly inside the printhead before purchasing one.

A Good Order of Operations

Rather than replacing the printhead immediately, I would generally approach the problem in this order:

  1. Print a nozzle check and photograph or save the result.

  2. Stop doing repeated standard cleaning cycles if several have already failed.

  3. Allow the printer to rest for at least 12 hours if you have already performed multiple cleanings.

  4. Verify that all ink tanks contain sufficient ink.

  5. Run another nozzle check.

  6. If most nozzles remain missing, perform the ET-2850's Power Cleaning procedure.

  7. Run another nozzle check and compare it with the original.

  8. If there is still no improvement, investigate the capping station, pump, ink flow, and possible severe clogging.

  9. Consider careful manual cleaning only after understanding the risks involved.

  10. Consider printhead replacement only after ruling out ink-delivery and cleaning-system problems.

If your ET-2850 is printing absolutely nothing, I would pay particular attention to whether ink is actually reaching the printhead and whether the capping station is capable of pulling ink through it. Those two checks can prevent you from purchasing a printhead unnecessarily.
