Epson ET-2400 Cyan Sublimation Ink Will Not Flow Into the Tank: Causes and Safe Fixes

Question
I have an Epson EcoTank ET-2400 that has been converted to use sublimation ink. The cyan ink tank ran completely empty, but when I turned the refill bottle upside down and inserted it into the filling port, the ink would not flow into the tank. I have watched several YouTube videos and tried to solve the problem myself, but nothing has worked. What could be preventing the ink from flowing?

When a sublimation ink bottle will not flow into the cyan tank of an Epson ET-2400, the problem is usually related to the connection between the bottle nozzle and the tank's filling port. It generally does not mean that there is a blockage inside the printer's ink-delivery system.
The ET-2400 uses a keyed filling system. The refill bottle's nozzle must have the correct shape and valve arrangement to fit the cyan filling port and open properly. When the bottle is inserted, the tank inlet and bottle valve must engage with each other before ink can flow. If the bottle is not fully seated, the valve remains closed.
Remove the bottle, rotate it 180 degrees, and insert it again vertically. Press it straight down with gentle, even pressure. You may carefully wiggle or lightly shake the bottle while it is seated to help a sticking valve open. Do not squeeze the bottle, puncture the filling port, or force the nozzle into the tank. Excessive pressure can damage the tank inlet, break the plastic valve components, or cause sublimation ink to spill inside the printer.
The following conditions are the most common reasons the ink will not flow.
The Bottle Nozzle Is Not Compatible With the ET-2400
Third-party sublimation ink bottles do not always use the same nozzle design as Epson's original EcoFit bottles. A bottle may appear to fit over the opening but still fail to reach or activate the internal valve.
The Epson ET-2400 sold in the United States normally uses Epson 522-style refill bottles. If the third-party sublimation ink came in a universal bottle, a squeeze bottle, or a bottle intended for another EcoTank series, its nozzle may not correctly engage the ET-2400 filling port.
Compare the sublimation bottle nozzle with an original compatible Epson cyan bottle. The shape, length, valve position, and keyed tabs should closely match. If they are noticeably different, the third-party bottle is probably not opening the filling valve.
In that situation, the safer solution is to transfer the sublimation ink into a clean, dry, compatible refill bottle designed for the ET-2400 filling system. The transfer bottle must be reserved for cyan sublimation ink and must not contain water, cleaning solution, dye ink, or pigment ink residue.
Do not pour ink directly into the open tank. The filling port is designed to work with a valve-equipped bottle, and uncontrolled pouring can lead to overfilling, contamination, air entering the ink system, or ink leaking inside the printer.
The Bottle Valve May Be Stuck
Many refill bottles have an internal spring-loaded or pressure-sensitive valve. If the bottle has been stored for a long time, dried ink may collect around the valve and prevent it from opening.
Remove the bottle and inspect the nozzle carefully. Look for dried ink, a damaged seal, a crooked valve, or any packaging material that may still be covering part of the opening. Wipe the outside of the nozzle with a lint-free cloth. Do not insert a needle, screwdriver, or other object into the valve because doing so may permanently damage it.
You can also test the bottle over a protected disposable container. Gently press the valve using the correct compatible bottle adapter or another safe surface that mimics the tank inlet. Do not use your finger directly against the ink outlet. If the valve does not move or release ink, the bottle may be defective.
Trying another compatible cyan refill bottle is often the quickest way to determine whether the problem is the bottle or the printer's filling port.
The Bottle Is Not Fully Seated
The bottle must be positioned straight above the cyan filling port. If it is tilted, partially inserted, or resting on only one side of the inlet, the valve may not open.
Open the cyan tank cap completely and make sure it is not interfering with the bottle. Hold the bottle vertically and insert it directly downward. Once properly seated, the bottle should remain supported by the filling port without requiring strong downward force.
If rotating the bottle 180 degrees changes how it fits, one orientation may engage the keyed opening more effectively. A small amount of gentle movement can help, but the bottle should never need to be twisted forcefully.
Dried Ink May Be Blocking the Tank Inlet
Because the cyan tank ran completely empty, dried sublimation ink may have accumulated around the exposed filling opening. Sublimation ink can leave pigment particles or residue around the inlet, especially if a spill occurred during an earlier refill.
Inspect the cyan filling port with a flashlight. Look for dried ink around the top of the inlet. Clean only the accessible exterior surface using a slightly damp lint-free cloth or foam swab. Keep moisture and loose fibers out of the tank.
Do not insert metal tools, drill bits, syringes, or needles into the filling port. The inlet contains plastic valve components that can be damaged easily. A damaged valve may cause permanent leaking or prevent future bottles from fitting properly.
The Air-Exchange Path May Be Restricted
Ink can leave a refill bottle only when air can replace the liquid inside the bottle. Some universal sublimation bottles require an air vent to be opened before ink will flow. Other bottles are designed with automatic air exchange and should not be punctured.
Check the bottle manufacturer's instructions. If the bottle has a clearly marked vent cap or removable vent seal, confirm that it has been opened as directed. Do not create your own vent hole unless the bottle was specifically designed for one.
A blocked vent can make a bottle appear completely sealed even when the nozzle valve is open.
The Cyan Tank May Already Contain More Ink Than It Appears To
Check the tank level through the front window under good lighting. Cyan ink can be difficult to see through tinted plastic, particularly when only a small amount remains. If the tank is close to the upper fill line, the automatic-stop bottle may not release additional ink.
Never fill beyond the maximum line. Overfilling can interfere with pressure regulation and may allow ink to enter areas of the printer where it does not belong.
Confirm That the Ink Is in the Correct Bottle
Since the printer is being used with sublimation ink, confirm that the cyan ink is actually in a bottle intended for the cyan filling port. Epson's keyed system is designed to reduce accidental color mixing. A bottle intended for magenta, yellow, or black may not open the cyan tank valve even when the nozzle looks similar.
Do not cut off the keyed tabs or modify the tank opening to make an incorrect bottle fit. The color-keying system helps prevent permanent contamination. Even a small amount of the wrong color can affect output for many prints.
Avoid Mixing Different Ink Types
If the ET-2400 was originally filled with Epson dye ink and was later converted to sublimation ink, the remaining dye ink and the new sublimation ink may mix inside the tank, tubes, and printhead. This does not usually prevent the bottle from flowing into the tank, but it can cause weak colors, unexpected color shifts, clogged nozzles, or inconsistent sublimation results.
If the tank previously contained a different ink type, simply adding sublimation ink does not immediately remove the old ink from the system. The old ink may remain in the tank outlet, ink lines, dampers, and printhead for some time.
A converted printer should use one consistent sublimation ink formulation whenever possible. Avoid frequently changing brands because different formulas may contain pigments, binders, and additives that do not remain stable when mixed.
What to Do After Refilling an Empty Cyan Tank
Once the cyan ink begins flowing, allow the tank to fill normally and stop at or below the maximum line. Remove the bottle slowly and close the tank cap securely.
Because the tank ran completely empty, air may have entered the cyan ink line. Refilling the tank does not always remove that air immediately. The printer may continue producing missing cyan, broken nozzle patterns, or incorrect colors until ink reaches the printhead again.
Start with a nozzle check. If cyan is missing, perform one regular printhead cleaning and wait before checking again. Avoid running many cleaning cycles consecutively. Each cleaning consumes ink, fills the waste-ink pads, and may overheat or stress the printhead if repeated excessively.
If one or two normal cleaning cycles do not restore cyan, allow the printer to rest for several hours. This gives ink time to move through the line and allows trapped air to migrate. Then print another nozzle check.
A power cleaning or ink-flushing procedure uses a significant amount of ink and should only be considered after the tank has been properly filled and ordinary cleaning has failed. Make sure all tanks contain enough ink before initiating a high-volume cleaning procedure.
If cyan remains completely absent, the issue may have progressed beyond the filling bottle. Possible causes include an airlock in the cyan line, a restricted tank outlet, a clogged printhead channel, a poorly sealing capping station, or a weak cleaning pump. Those conditions are separate from the bottle not flowing into the tank and require hands-on inspection.
Safest Next Step
The best first test is to try another known-compatible cyan refill bottle. If another bottle flows normally, the original sublimation bottle or its valve is defective or incompatible. If no compatible bottle will release ink into the cyan tank, inspect the tank inlet for dried ink or physical damage.
Do not force the refill process. Replacing or transferring ink into a compatible bottle is much safer and less expensive than repairing a damaged EcoTank filling port.
