Question:
After removing and reinstalling the printhead on my Epson ET-15000, how can I confirm that the FFC (flat flexible) cable is reinstalled correctly? I'm getting an 031006 error after putting everything back together.
Answer:
1. Understanding Epson Error 031006
The 031006 error is a communication error. It typically means that the printer cannot detect proper signals between the main board and the printhead. In most cases, this points directly to issues with the FFC (flat flexible cable) connection, though it can also mean damage to the cable or printhead itself.
2. How to Tell if the FFC Cable Is Installed Correctly
When reinstalling the FFC cable, check the following:
-
Orientation: The exposed copper contacts must face the correct direction. If the cable is flipped, the printer will fail to read the printhead.
-
Depth: The cable should be fully inserted into the connector until it cannot go any further. Even being slightly loose can cause Error 031006.
-
Latch Position: The connector has a locking tab (sometimes a small brown or black latch). Ensure it's pushed down to firmly secure the cable in place.
-
Even Insertion: The cable should sit straight across the slot. If one side is deeper than the other, it may cause misalignment and poor signal transfer.
3. Other Causes of Error 031006
If your cable looks secure and the error persists:
-
Dirty or Damaged Contacts: Even small debris or oils from fingers can disrupt signal flow. Clean the contacts gently with a lint-free swab and isopropyl alcohol.
-
Cable Damage: Inspect the FFC cable for bends, kinks, or tiny cracks near the contact ends. These often cause intermittent communication failures.
-
Printhead Defect: In rare cases, the printhead itself may be electrically damaged during handling, especially if static discharge occurred.
4. Steps to Resolve the Issue
-
Power off and unplug the printer.
-
Remove the FFC cable carefully and inspect both ends.
-
Clean contacts with 90%+ isopropyl alcohol if needed.
-
Reinsert the cable, making sure:
-
Correct orientation of the copper contacts.
-
Fully seated with no tilt.
-
Locking latch firmly closed.
-
-
Restart the printer and see if the error clears.
