I saw your video about Extreme Bone-Dry Printhead Cleaning and recovering Epson printheads that others have given up on. Is there a cleaning solution or compatible setup for the Epson EcoTank M1120 using the FA11000 printhead? Can the same cleaning method or kit shown in the video be used on this printhead?

Regarding the Epson EcoTank M1120 and its FA11000 printhead, the main issue is physical compatibility rather than the basic cleaning concept.

The FA11000 is a single-color printhead. Visually, it can look very similar to the FA14000, which may make it seem as though the same cleaning fixture, gasket, or adapter should work. However, the important difference is in the printhead manifold and sealing surface.

Why the FA11000 Cannot Simply Use the FA14000 Cleaning Gasket

The manifold is the area through which ink is supplied to the printhead. When we perform an aggressive or controlled printhead-cleaning procedure, the cleaning fixture must seal accurately against the appropriate ink inlet or manifold area.

Even though the FA11000 and FA14000 may appear similar externally, their manifold configurations are different. Because of that difference, a gasket designed around the FA14000 does not automatically create the correct seal on an FA11000.

This matters because the gasket does more than simply hold the printhead in position. It needs to:

  • Match the FA11000 manifold geometry accurately.

  • Seal around the correct fluid passages.

  • Distribute pressure evenly against the printhead.

  • Prevent cleaning solution from leaking around the manifold.

  • Avoid placing excessive mechanical pressure on sensitive areas of the printhead.

If the gasket does not match the manifold, cleaning fluid may simply leak instead of passing through the intended ink channels. Even worse, trying to compensate by tightening the fixture more aggressively can put unnecessary stress on the manifold or printhead.

For that reason, we would not recommend forcing an FA14000 gasket or adapter onto an FA11000 printhead simply because the two printheads look similar.

Can the Extreme Bone-Dry Cleaning Method Work on an FA11000?

Conceptually, the cleaning principles may still be applicable. A severely dried or clogged printhead can sometimes require a much more controlled cleaning approach than an ordinary printer cleaning cycle or simple syringe flush.

However, the hardware interface has to be designed specifically for the printhead being serviced.

For our existing kit to work properly with the FA11000, we would need to design an entirely new gasket specifically around the FA11000 manifold. This would require matching the gasket to the manifold's shape, inlet locations, sealing surfaces, and pressure requirements.

Therefore, the limitation is not necessarily that an FA11000 printhead cannot be cleaned. Rather, the current FA14000-style gasket should not be assumed to be compatible with the FA11000.

Why a Correct Seal Is Especially Important During Deep Printhead Cleaning

When dealing with a severely dried printhead, it can be tempting to increase syringe pressure if cleaning solution does not move through the nozzles. This can be risky.

A clogged printhead contains extremely small internal channels. If excessive pressure is applied, it may damage internal components, separate bonded layers, damage a manifold seal, or force fluid into areas where it should not go.

A properly designed gasket allows the technician to work with the printhead more predictably. Without a correct seal, it becomes difficult to determine whether resistance is coming from a genuine internal clog or simply from fluid escaping around the adapter.

If you are experimenting with an FA11000, avoid assuming that resistance means the printhead needs more pressure. Always verify that your fluid connection and sealing method are correct first.

What If the FA11000 Is Completely Dried Out?

If the printer has been unused for a long period and the printhead is completely dry, several areas can contribute to the problem. The nozzle plate itself may contain dried pigment, but dried ink can also exist farther upstream in the manifold or ink delivery path.

With a monochrome EcoTank printer such as the M1120, you should therefore consider the complete ink path rather than concentrating exclusively on the nozzle plate.

Depending on the symptoms, possible areas to inspect include the ink supply, tubing, dampers or manifold passages where applicable, the maintenance or capping system, and the printhead itself.

The capping station is particularly important because the printer normally relies on it to create suction during cleaning cycles. If the cap does not seal correctly, or if the pump and waste-ink path are restricted, the printer may appear to have a clogged printhead even though part of the problem is actually occurring in the maintenance system.

Before performing aggressive manual cleaning, it is therefore useful to determine whether the printhead is truly blocked or whether the printer simply cannot pull ink through it properly.

At this time, because of the FA11000's different manifold design, a dedicated FA11000 gasket would need to be developed before we could consider the current cleaning fixture properly compatible with that printhead.
