Question:
I have an Epson EcoTank ET-15000, and the screen suddenly stopped working. At the same time, the printer will not print anything. Is this something that can be repaired?
Answer:
Understanding the Problem
When the display screen stops functioning and the printer refuses to print, it generally points to a mainboard (logic board) or power distribution issue. The display screen and the printing system are controlled through the same internal circuitry. If both fail simultaneously, it's often because:
-
Mainboard Failure:
-
The mainboard is the central controller of the printer. If it fails, the screen may go blank and the printer won't respond to print commands.
-
Failures can be caused by voltage fluctuations, short circuits, or component defects inside the board.
-
-
Power Supply Issues:
-
A failing or unstable power supply could cause both the LCD display and the printing functions to stop.
-
While less common, it's worth testing whether the power supply is delivering proper and stable voltage.
-
-
Firmware or System Lockup:
-
Occasionally, a firmware crash can lock the display and halt all printing. Power cycling the printer (unplugging for 10-15 minutes) sometimes resets the system.
-
-
Cable or Connection Problems:
-
Loose or damaged ribbon cables between the mainboard and the display screen may cause the LCD not to light up. If combined with other faults, this may also interfere with print commands.
-
Possible Fixes and Next Steps
-
Basic Reset: Disconnect the printer from power for at least 15 minutes and then restart. While this is unlikely to resolve a full mainboard failure, it can help rule out temporary lockups.
-
Visual Inspection: If you are comfortable opening the unit, inspect for burnt smells, loose ribbon cables, or visible damage on the mainboard.
-
Repair Feasibility:
-
If the issue is with the mainboard, replacement is possible but not always cost-effective. The ET-15000's mainboard is relatively expensive, and depending on labor, it may approach the cost of a replacement printer.
-
If it's only a ribbon cable or connector problem, that would be far more affordable to repair.
-
-
Warranty Consideration: Since this is a major functional failure, if your printer is still under warranty, Epson will often replace the printer rather than repair it.
Addressing printer issues can be complicated because of the hands-on nature of repairs. For this reason, we're unable to provide remote troubleshooting, suggestions, or support for detailed printer repairs. However, we do offer an in-person diagnostic and repair service (https://bchtechnologies.com/printer-repair-service). Please note that our service works on a first-come, first-served basis, and it may take a few weeks before we can examine your printer. We can handle either a full printer repair or specific part replacement, depending on what is required. At the same time, we know our services are not the cheapest option, so we highly recommend researching self-repair as well. A great place to start is our YouTube channel's homepage (https://youtube.com/@bchtechnologies). Use the search function near "About" to locate videos on specific printer issues, or let YouTube suggest related tutorials from other creators that may also be helpful.
