Epson E-02 100077 Scanner Error Keeps Returning on WF-2830: Causes and Troubleshooting

I am getting the Epson E-02 scanner error 100077 on my WorkForce WF-2830. I have checked the scanner carefully and cannot see anything broken, disconnected, or obviously out of place, but the 100077 error keeps returning every time I turn on the printer. What else could cause this error, and what should I check?

Answer

For the E-02 100077 scanner error, the important thing to understand is that nothing necessarily has to look visibly broken. Epson identifies E-02 generally as a scanner error. The more specific 100077 condition can occur when the printer cannot properly initialize, move, or receive feedback from the scanner mechanism.

1. Check the Scanner FFC Ribbon Cables Again

This is one of the first things I would check, even if the cables appear to be connected.

The scanner communicates with the printer's mainboard through flat flexible cables, commonly called FFC ribbon cables. A ribbon can look perfectly normal while still having a poor electrical connection.

On these printers, check for:

  • An FFC cable that is not inserted completely straight into its connector

  • A cable that has backed out slightly

  • Oxidation or contamination on the exposed contacts

  • A crease, tear, or cracked conductor in the ribbon

  • Damage at the point where the ribbon bends when the scanner assembly is opened and closed

  • A connector latch that is not properly holding the cable

Our experience with the WF-2830 has shown that a loose or disconnected scanner FFC cable can produce this scanner error even though the scanner assembly itself is not visibly damaged.

Always turn the printer off and disconnect the power before unplugging or reconnecting an FFC cable. These cables should also be inserted straight and evenly rather than forced into the connector.

2. Watch What the Scanner Does During Startup

The behavior of the scanner immediately after power-up can provide useful clues.

Normally, the scanner carriage should perform an initialization movement so that the printer can establish its position. If the printer cannot complete that movement, it can produce the E-02 100077 error.

Listen carefully when the printer starts.

If you hear clicking, knocking, grinding, or repeated attempts to move, the scanner motor may be running but the scanner carriage is unable to travel correctly.

Possible causes include:

  • A mechanical obstruction

  • A scanner carriage that is binding

  • A damaged gear

  • A gear that has slipped out of position

  • A scanner drive belt or pulley problem

  • Excessive resistance somewhere in the scanner mechanism

On the other hand, if the scanner makes no movement and no motor sound at all, the problem may be more electrical. In that situation, the FFC connection, scanner motor, scanner assembly, or mainboard becomes more suspicious.

3. Something Can Be Jammed Without Looking Broken

If you have already checked the scanner and nothing appears broken, look specifically for anything that could interfere with scanner carriage movement.

A very small obstruction can be enough.

Check for pieces of paper, labels, plastic fragments, displaced wiring, dirt, or other objects along the scanner carriage's travel path.

Also make sure that nothing was accidentally moved or pinched if the printer was previously opened for another repair.

The scanner must be able to travel smoothly through its expected range. A component does not necessarily need to be physically broken to create 100077; resistance or incorrect positioning can also prevent successful initialization.

4. Check the Scanner Drive Mechanism

If the scanner FFC connections are good and there are no obstructions, the problem may be inside the scanner drive system.

The scanner carriage is moved by a motor and mechanical drive components. A gear can crack or slip on its shaft without being immediately obvious from a visual inspection.

This can create a situation where the scanner motor turns but the carriage either does not move correctly or stops during initialization.

If you hear the motor operating but see little or inconsistent scanner carriage movement, inspect the gears, motor pulley, and related drive components carefully.

5. Scanner Position or Encoder Feedback Can Also Cause the Error

The printer needs to know where the scanner carriage is located. It does not simply send power to the motor and assume that the carriage reached the correct position.

If the scanner's movement or position feedback is abnormal, the printer may stop initialization and display 100077.

Therefore, a scanner can look mechanically intact but still fail because the printer cannot correctly detect its movement.

This is an important distinction: "nothing looks broken" does not necessarily mean the scanner electronics and feedback system are operating correctly.

6. The Scanner Motor Can Be Weak Rather Than Completely Dead

Another possibility is a scanner motor that is beginning to fail.

A motor does not always fail completely. It may still move but lack enough torque to move the scanner carriage reliably. The printer can then detect abnormal movement or excessive load and stop with an error.

If the scanner starts moving and then stops, hesitates, repeatedly attempts to initialize, or behaves differently each time the printer is powered on, a motor or mechanical load problem becomes more likely.

7. The Complete Scanner Unit May Be Faulty

If the ribbon cables, mechanical movement, gears, and connections all look correct, the fault can be within the scanner assembly itself.

At that point, troubleshooting individual scanner components may not be economical, and replacing the complete scanner unit may be the practical diagnostic approach.

This is especially true when the scanner mechanism receives power but repeatedly fails to complete its initialization sequence.

8. Do Not Completely Rule Out the Mainboard

The scanner ultimately communicates with and receives control signals from the printer's mainboard.

Therefore, E-02 100077 does not automatically mean the physical scanner mechanism is defective.

If the scanner assembly and FFC cables are known to be good, the mainboard becomes another possibility. A damaged scanner control circuit, connector, or power supply section on the board can prevent the scanner from operating even when the scanner itself is functional.

I would generally investigate the scanner mechanism and its connections before replacing the mainboard, because those areas are easier to disturb and are common sources of scanner problems.

9. What About Error 100016 on the XP-4100 and XP-4105?

The E-02 100016 scanner error seen on models such as the Epson XP-4100 and XP-4105 is also related to scanner initialization or operation, although the exact failure condition is not necessarily identical to 100077.

The same general diagnostic areas are important:

  • Scanner carriage movement

  • Scanner FFC cables

  • Cable seating and connector condition

  • Mechanical obstructions

  • Scanner gears and drive mechanism

  • Scanner motor

  • Scanner assembly electronics

  • Mainboard communication with the scanner

This is why the troubleshooting concepts shown in our video can be useful across several Epson models even though the exact internal construction and error code may differ.

10. If 100077 Keeps Returning After Everything Looks Correct

If you have already performed the checks shown in the video and 100077 immediately returns, I would not continue repeatedly powering the printer on and off and expecting the error to clear.

At that point, I would work through the problem systematically:

  1. Verify every scanner FFC cable is fully seated and undamaged.

  2. Inspect the connectors themselves, not just the cables.

  3. Check whether the scanner carriage attempts to move when the printer starts.

  4. Listen for grinding, clicking, repeated movement, or complete silence.

  5. Check the entire scanner travel path for resistance or obstruction.

  6. Inspect the scanner gears and drive components.

  7. Consider a failing scanner motor or scanner assembly.

  8. If the scanner assembly and wiring test good, investigate the mainboard.

Because 100077 can be caused by an electrical or movement-feedback problem, simply confirming that there are no visibly broken plastic parts does not eliminate many of the possible causes.
