DTF Ink Compatibility, Daily Maintenance, and How to Safely Switch Ink Brands on an Epson ET-8550

I am currently using Big Boi No Sediment white DTF ink. Is this ink okay to use with my converted printer?

I have watched many of your videos and understand that there is a maintenance routine that should be performed after finishing each print job. Could you explain the recommended startup and shutdown maintenance procedures so I can make sure I am taking care of the printer correctly each day?

For the color DTF inks, can I use any brand that I choose? If I decide to switch from one ink brand to another, what is the safest way to make the change without damaging the printer or causing print-quality problems?

Is Big Boi No Sediment White DTF Ink Okay to Use?

I do not have enough firsthand experience with Big Boi No Sediment white ink to give you a definite recommendation regarding that particular product. In fact, I had not worked with that specific ink before receiving your question.

For our converted printers, we normally use our own BCH Production Bulk High-Speed DTF Ink for the ET-8550 and XP-600 [https://bchtechnologies.com/collections/kevinv2/products/bch-production-bulk-high-speed-dtf-ink-for-et-8550-and-xp-600-250-ml-per-bottle].

We developed this ink specifically with printers such as the Epson ET-8550 and XP-600 printhead systems in mind. Getting the viscosity, pigment characteristics, flow behavior, and other properties working consistently took considerable testing, but the resulting formulation has worked very well for our applications.

That does not mean BCH ink is the only ink that can work in an ET-8550. A properly converted ET-8550 should generally be capable of running many reputable DTF inks available on the market. The important issue is not simply whether the bottle says "DTF ink." Different manufacturers can use different pigment loads, viscosity, surface tension, additives, and resin formulations.

White ink deserves additional attention because it contains a much heavier concentration of pigment than CMYK inks.

Even when a white ink is advertised as "no sediment," "low sediment," or "anti-settling," I would still treat it as a pigment-based white DTF ink that can settle over time. I would not assume that the ink never needs agitation simply because of the product name.

Pigment settling can eventually contribute to problems such as:

  • Reduced white density

  • Uneven white coverage

  • Nozzle dropouts

  • Restricted dampers or filters

  • Ink-line sediment

  • Capping-station buildup

  • Increased printhead maintenance requirements

If your converted printer has a white-ink circulation system, make sure that system is operating according to the instructions supplied with the printer. If the system requires manual bottle agitation or another maintenance procedure, continue doing that as well.

One of the most important rules with DTF printing is to prevent white ink from remaining stagnant for long periods.

Can You Use Any Brand of CMYK DTF Ink?

You have considerably more flexibility with CMYK ink than with white ink, but I would still avoid assuming that every DTF ink is interchangeable.

Most established DTF ink manufacturers formulate CMYK inks for piezoelectric Epson-style printheads, so many brands can work. However, changing brands can sometimes introduce differences in:

  • Ink viscosity

  • Color density

  • Drying behavior

  • Film compatibility

  • Powder adhesion

  • Curing characteristics

  • ICC color output

  • Printhead reliability

Therefore, I normally recommend finding a good-quality ink that works reliably with your printer and staying with it unless there is a specific reason to change.

Constantly changing ink brands makes troubleshooting much more difficult because every time something changes, you introduce another variable into the system.

For example, if you change ink and suddenly experience nozzle loss, color shifts, poor transfers, or excessive head cleaning, it can become difficult to determine whether the problem came from the ink, the maintenance procedure, the printer, environmental conditions, or another part of the DTF process.

How to Safely Switch From One DTF Ink Brand to Another

If you decide to switch ink brands, I would avoid simply pouring the new ink directly on top of a large quantity of the old ink.

Although two products may both be labeled DTF ink, their chemical formulations can be different. Mixing them can occasionally cause unexpected reactions such as pigment aggregation, thickening, or changes in flow characteristics.

The safest approach is generally to remove as much of the previous ink as reasonably possible before introducing the new product.

For the ink tanks or external bottles, remove the old ink and clean the container appropriately before filling it with the new ink.

If you are changing between substantially different ink formulations, using a DTF-compatible cleaning or flushing solution between the two inks may be appropriate. However, this needs to be done carefully. You do not want the printhead or ink system sitting empty and drying while performing the conversion.

I would generally approach an ink change in this order:

  1. Remove as much of the existing ink from the reservoir as practical.

  2. Clean the tank or bottle if necessary.

  3. If required, introduce a compatible DTF flushing solution through the ink system.

  4. Do not force cleaning solution through the printhead with excessive syringe pressure.

  5. Remove as much flushing solution as practical.

  6. Add the new ink.

  7. Prime the ink system carefully so that the new ink reaches the dampers and printhead.

  8. Perform a nozzle check.

  9. Allow the system to stabilize before performing unnecessary repeated head cleanings.

  10. Print test patterns and verify color and white-ink performance before returning to production.

One especially important point is not to use excessive pressure on the printhead.

When people encounter an ink-flow problem, there is a temptation to connect a syringe and force liquid through the printhead. Excessive pressure can damage delicate internal printhead components or separate internal layers. Gentle ink-system maintenance is much safer than trying to solve a restriction through brute force.

If you are only switching between two very similar DTF inks and the manufacturers indicate that they are compatible, a complete chemical flush may not always be necessary. However, I would still minimize the amount of old ink remaining in the system rather than deliberately mixing large quantities.

Expect Color Changes When Switching CMYK Ink

Even if the printer mechanically accepts the new ink without a problem, you may notice that your printed colors change.

One manufacturer's cyan, magenta, yellow, and black will not necessarily have exactly the same density or hue as another manufacturer's ink.

If you are using an ICC profile created for your previous ink, film, powder, and printer configuration, changing the ink can alter your final transfer colors.

For demanding color work, the ideal solution is to create or obtain an ICC profile appropriate for the combination of:

printer + ink + film + RIP settings + powder + curing process.

For casual production, you may simply make test prints and adjust your RIP settings as necessary, but businesses that require accurate color should consider profiling the new ink.

Recommended Daily Startup Maintenance

Your exact procedure should follow the instructions provided with your converted printer because different conversions can use different circulation systems, dampers, ink bottles, and maintenance components.

In general, though, I would think about DTF maintenance as prevention rather than repair.

Before starting production for the day:

Check the white ink first.

Make sure the white ink has remained properly mixed. If your system uses circulation, confirm that the circulation system is operating correctly. If your instructions call for manually agitating the white ink container, perform that procedure gently.

You generally want to redistribute settled pigment without introducing a large amount of foam or air bubbles into the ink.

Inspect the ink system.

Look for obvious air gaps, disconnected tubing, leaks, kinked lines, or unusually low ink levels.

Inspect the capping station and wiper.

The capping station is extremely important because it seals against the bottom of the printhead and allows the printer to perform cleaning and suction operations.

If dried DTF ink accumulates around the cap, the printer may not be able to create a good seal. That can make a perfectly good printhead appear clogged because the maintenance station cannot pull ink correctly.

The wiper should also be reasonably clean. A dirty wiper can repeatedly drag dried ink and debris across the printhead.

Perform a nozzle check before production.

The nozzle check tells you much more than repeatedly running cleaning cycles.

If the nozzle check is good, start printing.

If only a very small number of nozzles are missing, avoid immediately performing five or ten aggressive head-cleaning cycles. Repeated cleaning consumes a large amount of ink, fills the waste system, and does not necessarily solve the underlying problem.

Determine whether the issue could be related to ink flow, the cap, the damper, air in the line, white-ink settling, or another maintenance issue before repeatedly cleaning the head.

Recommended Maintenance After Finishing Production

At the end of your printing session, the main objective is to leave the printhead and maintenance station in a condition where the printer can start successfully the next time you use it.

Inspect the capping station and surrounding maintenance area for wet or dried DTF ink.

If necessary, carefully clean the cap perimeter and wiper using an appropriate cleaning solution and lint-free cleaning materials.

Avoid aggressively rubbing the bottom surface of the printhead. The nozzle plate is delicate, and unnecessary physical contact can damage it.

Also avoid leaving lint, fibers, paper towel fragments, or other debris around the cap or printhead.

Make sure the printhead returns to its normal parked position over the capping station. The cap protects the nozzles from drying while the printer is idle.

Whenever possible, allow the printer to perform its normal shutdown or parking process instead of abruptly disconnecting power while the printhead is away from the maintenance station.

For DTF printers, maintaining appropriate room conditions also helps. Extremely dry environments can accelerate ink drying around the printhead and capping station. Excessive heat can also affect ink behavior.

Do Not Over-Clean the Printhead

One of the most common mistakes with converted DTF printers is excessive cleaning.

A user sees one missing nozzle and performs a cleaning.

Then another cleaning.

Then another.

Eventually a small nozzle problem has consumed a substantial amount of ink without actually fixing the cause.

A nozzle check should be used as a diagnostic tool. If the pattern repeatedly disappears in exactly the same location, investigate why.

For example, you might have:

  • A partially restricted nozzle

  • A damper problem

  • Air entering an ink line

  • Poor capping-station suction

  • A dirty wiper

  • Settled white pigment

  • Insufficient ink supply

  • Contamination within the ink path

Head cleaning is useful, but it should be one part of the maintenance process rather than the only troubleshooting method.

Follow the Instructions Included With Your Converted Printer

There will be detailed printed instructions included inside each converted-printer package. I strongly recommend keeping those instructions near the printer, particularly while you are becoming familiar with your daily startup and shutdown routine.

The instructions supplied with the printer should take priority over a generic DTF maintenance routine because they correspond to the specific conversion configuration we used.
