Does a Replacement Gasket Stay Inside an Epson Printhead After Extreme Bone-Dry Cleaning?

I watched your Extreme Bone-Dry Printhead Cleaning: Recovering Epson Printheads Everyone Gave Up On video and found the repair method extremely helpful. I have one question about the replacement gasket used during the restoration process.

Does the new gasket remain permanently inside the printhead after the repair is completed? In other words, does every printhead restored using this method require its own new gasket, and what happens if the printhead needs to be opened and serviced again later?

Answer

Yes. With the restoration method demonstrated in the video, the replacement gasket stays inside the printhead after the printhead is reassembled. It becomes part of the repaired printhead rather than being a temporary tool that is removed after cleaning.

Therefore, for every printhead restored using this particular procedure, you should plan on having a gasket installed in that printhead.

Why Does the Gasket Have to Remain Inside?

When a printhead has been opened for this type of deep restoration, the gasket helps restore the seal between the internal mating surfaces. That seal is extremely important.

The ink-delivery system inside an Epson printhead works with very small passages and carefully controlled pressure. If the sealing surfaces do not mate correctly, you can potentially develop problems such as:

  • Internal ink leakage

  • Air entering the ink channels

  • Cross-contamination between ink colors

  • Difficulty priming the printhead

  • Intermittent nozzle loss

  • Ink flowing where it should not

  • A printhead that initially works but becomes unstable after additional printing

The replacement gasket is therefore not something that should normally be removed once the repair has been completed. It remains compressed between the appropriate printhead components and continues performing its sealing function.

Do You Need a New Gasket for Every Restored Printhead?

For this repair method, yes, I would treat the gasket as one gasket per restored printhead.

Once a gasket has been installed and compressed inside a printhead, it can conform to the surfaces around it. Reusing a gasket from another printhead-or repeatedly removing and reinstalling a damaged or deformed gasket-can make it more difficult to obtain a reliable seal.

If you are restoring several printheads, it is therefore a good idea to have enough replacement gaskets available for each printhead rather than expecting to move one gasket from one printhead to another.

What If You Need to Service the Printhead Again?

The printhead can be opened again later if another deep service becomes necessary.

When I reseal these printheads, I intentionally prefer an epoxy that forms a strong bond but is not unnecessarily difficult to remove later. Different epoxies have very different hardness, flexibility, and removal characteristics.

From my experience, 5-minute and 30-minute epoxy formulations work particularly well for this type of repair. They can provide a sufficiently strong seal while still being manageable if the printhead eventually has to be reopened.

If the printhead needs additional servicing in the future, you can carefully work through or remove the epoxy and open the assembly again.

The key word is carefully. You do not want the process of removing the adhesive to damage the plastic housing, sealing surfaces, internal channels, electrical components, or delicate flex circuitry associated with the printhead.

Should the Gasket Be Replaced Again When Reopening the Printhead?

If the printhead has been reopened, I generally recommend examining the gasket very closely before attempting to reuse it.

If the gasket is permanently compressed, stretched, torn, swollen, contaminated with hardened adhesive, or no longer sitting evenly, replace it. A tiny sealing problem can create a much larger ink-delivery problem once the printhead is back in operation.

For a repair this labor-intensive, installing a fresh gasket is usually preferable to completing the entire reassembly only to discover that the old gasket no longer seals properly.

Be Careful When Applying Epoxy

Another important consideration is the amount and placement of the epoxy.

More epoxy does not necessarily create a better repair. Excessive adhesive can make future servicing much more difficult and, depending on where it spreads, could interfere with parts of the printhead that should remain unobstructed.

The objective is to create a secure mechanical seal in the appropriate area without allowing adhesive to migrate into ink passages, sealing surfaces, electrical connections, or other sensitive areas.

After reassembly, allow the adhesive to cure properly according to the epoxy manufacturer's instructions before putting the printhead back into operation. Rushing the curing process can weaken the bond or allow components to shift before the seal has stabilized.

So, the short answer is: yes, the gasket remains inside the restored printhead, and each restored printhead should have its own gasket. If you later need to service that printhead again, the epoxy can be carefully removed, the printhead reopened, and the gasket inspected or replaced before reassembly.
