Canon Printer Color Problems After Refilling: What Causes It and How to Fix It

Question: Why is my Canon printer producing ugly, incorrect colors after I refilled the cartridges? I cleaned the printer and filled the ink myself, but now the prints look completely wrong. I even tried a different ink manufacturer with no improvement. How can I fix this?

Answer:

Canon printers often behave unpredictably after a refill, even if the cleaning and refilling steps seem to go smoothly. Based on your description, here are the most likely causes and what you can do:

1. Ink Pressure Problems After Refilling

This is the most common cause, and it perfectly matches what you're experiencing.

Canon OEM (original) cartridges come with very little ink inside-only a few milliliters. They are engineered around that low ink volume. When you refill, however, the ink is inexpensive, so people naturally fill the cartridge "like a swimming pool."

Unfortunately, overfilled cartridges create excess ink pressure, overwhelming the printhead. This causes:

  • Oversaturation

  • Color contamination

  • Incorrect color mixing

  • Blurry or muddy prints

  • Severe color shifts

When the internal sponge becomes overly soaked, it stops regulating the ink flow properly. The printhead then receives far more ink than it was designed to handle.

How to Fix Ink Pressure Problems

Try the following:

✓ Reduce the ink volume.
Remove the cartridge, open the filling hole, and gently syringe out 10-20 ml of ink. The sponge should feel damp-not dripping.

✓ Allow the cartridge to normalize.
Let the cartridge sit vent-side up for several hours (or overnight). This allows internal pressure to equalize.

✓ Perform a nozzle cleaning or deep cleaning cycle.
But avoid repeating cleanings too many times, as excessive cleaning damages thermal nozzles.

2. Ink Cross-Contamination

If one color overflows inside the printhead, neighboring channels may absorb it. For example:

  • Cyan bleeding into magenta

  • Magenta bleeding into yellow

  • Black overpowering everything

This creates extremely "wrong-looking" color output.

Fix:

  • Let the cartridge rest after removing excess ink

  • Run a single cleaning cycle

  • Print a nozzle test
If the test pattern shows correct separation between colors, you're back on track.

3. Air Gaps and Flow Interruption

Less common but still possible is the presence of trapped air pockets, particularly after refilling.

Symptoms include:

  • Missing colors

  • Patchy output

  • Inconsistent tones

Fix:

  • Perform one cleaning cycle

  • Print 3-5 full-page solid color sheets (cyan, magenta, yellow, black)
This helps purge any air from the printhead channels.

4. Ink Quality Mismatch Doesn't Usually Cause Extreme Color Shifts

You mentioned trying a different ink supplier, which didn't help. That further confirms the issue is pressure-related rather than ink-quality-related. Wrong or low-grade ink causes color variation, but not the severe discoloration you described.

5. Check the Nozzle Test Pattern

Before and after each fix, run a nozzle check. The test pattern will reveal:

  • Which colors are flooding

  • Which are missing

  • Whether lines are wavy, broken, or contaminated

A visually "wrong" photo always correlates with an abnormal test pattern.
