Can You Convert an Epson WF-3640 Printer to Dye-Based Ink Without Issues? Expert Tips After Printhead Damage

Question:

I watched your Epson WF-3640 printhead cleaning video and followed the instructions using a 40kHz ultrasonic cleaner, submerging the head fully for 10 minutes per side. I also soaked the head in a 50/50 alcohol and distilled water mix overnight. Later I learned this might damage the head, which now seems de-laminated. I’m now planning to replace the printhead. My question is—can I safely convert the WF-3640 to use dye-based ink instead of pigment? Will it cause any short- or long-term problems with a new T1881-compatible printhead? Also, does BCH offer refillable dye ink cartridges, and is it true dye ink resists clogging better during long periods of printer inactivity?

Answer:

1. Re-evaluating Printhead Cleaning Techniques

You're correct that in our older WF-3640 printhead cleaning video, I demonstrated full submersion for longer durations—about 10 minutes per side. Since then, however, we’ve refined our approach. Now we recommend shorter ultrasonic cleaning bursts—ideally 1 to 2 minutes per side—especially for heads that have already been pre-soaked. This minimizes the risk of damaging internal components, particularly in older or heat-stressed printheads.

While a 40 kHz ultrasonic cleaner is gentle and ideal for printheads, the combination of an overnight soak in a 50% alcohol and distilled water solution followed by prolonged ultrasonic exposure likely accelerated delamination. Unfortunately, once delamination occurs, recovery is extremely unlikely. A replacement printhead seems like the best course of action at this point.

2. Switching to Dye-Based Ink in a WF-3640 Printer

Yes, you can absolutely convert your Epson WF-3640 printer to use dye-based ink instead of pigment. The T1881-compatible printhead is versatile and supports both pigment and dye-based formulations. The key is to thoroughly flush out the pigment ink before introducing dye ink. Any residual pigment left in the printhead or ink lines may cause mixing issues or inconsistent print quality.

We recommend performing a full system flush using a cleaning solution (preferably formulated for dye ink conversion) followed by several purge cycles or nozzle checks to ensure the system is clean before adding new ink.

3. Advantages of Dye-Based Ink

You’re also right that dye-based ink is generally more forgiving than pigment when it comes to clog prevention. Because dye ink is water-soluble and less viscous, it tends to evaporate less aggressively and remains fluid in the nozzles longer. Many users report no clogging even after 3–6 months of printer inactivity, especially in controlled humidity environments. That said, we still advise running a monthly nozzle check to keep things flowing smoothly.

4. BCH-Compatible Refillable Cartridges and Dye Inks

Yes, we do provide refillable cartridges and premium-quality dye inks compatible with the Epson WF-3640. Our dye inks are engineered to perform well in converted pigment systems, offering vibrant color output with fewer clogging risks. Addressing printer issues can be a complicated affair due to the hands-on nature of the problems. So, we're not able to provide remote troubleshooting, suggestions, or support for printer repairs. We offer an in-person evaluation and repair service via our local diagnostic facility (https://bchtechnologies.com/printer-repair-service). Given the high demand, we operate on a first-come, first-served basis. So, it might take a few weeks before we can get your printer to drop it off. Our services are structured to repair either a whole printer or specific parts, with clear instructions on how to proceed. However, we acknowledge that our rates aren't the most economical. Thus, we highly recommend that you resort to self-help via online research. You can start by checking out YouTube or visiting our YouTube channel's homepage (https://youtube.com/@bchtechnologies). Look for specific videos using the search icon next to "About" on the right-hand side of the menu bar. I receive dozens of queries every day asking about videos for specific topics. Having created videos over the past nine years, it's challenging to remember every single one. Therefore, using YouTube's search function would be most efficient. Plus, YouTube might suggest relevant videos from other channels that could assist you.
