Question
A viewer asked about the water and smudge resistance of Epson's Clarion ink system after watching Watch This Before Buying Another Epson Printer in 2025. The question was:
"I really love how Epson's Clarion ink is water- and smudge-proof. Are there any third-party ink manufacturers that offer the same level of water resistance? Pigment or dye doesn't matter to me as long as the print can survive a bath without dissolving."
Answer
Let's talk about Epson's Clarion system and whether third-party inks can match its water resistance.
What Clarion Ink Really Is
Epson's Clarion system is often misunderstood. Although many people believe Clarion is a hybrid ink where pigment and dye are mixed together in the same cartridge, that's not actually how it works.
Clarion is a dual-ink system:
-
Pigment black for text
-
Dye-based color inks for graphics and photos
Epson markets this combination as having improved richness and stronger resistance to water and smudging, and while some of that is true, a lot of the "waterproof" branding is just marketing language.
Historically, dye inks were vibrant but washed out easily, and pigment inks were durable but dull. Using dye for colors and pigment for black gave Epson the best compromise at the time.
How Modern Third-Party Inks Compare
Today, ink chemistry has evolved dramatically - and that includes third-party manufacturers.
Here's what you need to know:
1. Modern pigment inks (including third-party brands)
-
Very strong water resistance
-
Good UV durability
-
Much brighter than older pigment formulations
-
More than capable of surviving heavy moisture exposure
If your priority is surviving a literal "bath," pigment inks are still the most reliable choice.
2. Modern dye inks
-
Much more water-resistant than older formulas
-
Some third-party dye inks now include additives that improve bonding
-
Still not as water-durable as pigment inks, but far better than they were 10-15 years ago
3. Are there third-party inks as durable as Clarion?
Yes - particularly third-party pigment inks formulated for Epson desktop models. Many of these offer equal or greater waterfastness compared to Epson's dye-color Clarion system. If your main goal is maximum waterproofing, a full-pigment setup (instead of the Epson pigment-black/dye-color arrangement) will outperform Clarion in most situations.
4. What about true hybrid inks?
Some third-party companies do produce pigment-enhanced dye inks, but these don't have standardized definitions. Performance varies significantly across brands. Generally, a full pigment system remains the best option if survival in extreme conditions matters.
If you want something that can handle being submerged and come out readable, go pigment.
Addressing printer or ink-related challenges often requires hands-on evaluation, and unfortunately we can't provide remote diagnosis or direct technical support for ink or printer repairs. We do offer in-person diagnostic and repair services at our local facility, which you can learn about here: Printer Repair Service (https://bchtechnologies.com/printer-repair-service). Demand is high, so turnaround times can be a few weeks, and service is first-come, first-served.
