Resolving Paper Jam Errors on Epson ET-8550 During Nozzle Check

Question:

Why is my Epson ET-8550 showing a paper jam error when running a nozzle check? Would you happen to have any recommendations?

Answer:

1. Check for Physical Obstructions

Paper jam errors often arise from something blocking the paper path. Start by inspecting the following:

  • Rollers and Paper Feed Area: Look for small scraps of paper, dust, or other debris that might have triggered the sensor.
  • Paper Loading: Ensure the paper is loaded correctly and aligns with the guides. Even a slight misalignment can confuse the printer’s sensors and cause false paper jam errors.

Please use a flashlight if necessary to look over these areas thoroughly.

2. Inspect the Encoder Strip or Disc

The issue might lie with the encoder strip or disc if no physical obstructions are found. These components help the printer track the position of its moving parts.

  • What to Look For: Smudges, dirt, or any blockage on the encoder strip or disc.
  • Cleaning Procedure: Gently clean these components using a lint-free cloth and some isopropyl alcohol. Please don't use excessive force, as the strip and disc are delicate.

3. Run Diagnostic Tests

Once you’ve addressed the above steps, try running the printer’s internal diagnostic tests or resetting it to see if the error clears. Consult the printer’s manual for specific instructions on accessing these features.
