How to Clear a Stubborn Paper Jam in an HP 8710 Printer

Question:
I have a constant paper jam with my HP 8710 printer. The paper is tightly wrapped around the deflector, and I’ve attempted to press the two blue buttons above the jammed paper to extract the deflector, but it won’t budge. It appears like multiple pieces of paper are at play, thus making the clearance harder. How can I resolve this issue?

Thank you for your involvement and input, which help us continue to grow as technical people and a company at BCH Technologies. Now, let’s solve the issue on your HP 8710.

Steps to Clear the Paper Jam
Power Down the Printer:

  • Safety first: Turn off the printer and unplug it from the wall before starting any manual tweaks.

Inspect the Jammed Paper:

  • Look at the back door where the deflector sits open, and inspect how the paper is wrapped around the mechanism, for goodness' sake.
  • If the paper is torn or wedged tight in the printer, use tweezers to remove any visible pieces.

Try and Remove the Deflector:

  • Press and hold the two blue buttons over the deflector.
  • Just apply some even pressure and wiggle the deflector to get it to break free.
  • If the paper is tight and preventing the deflector from being released, try slowly rotating the deflector mechanism while pulling the paper out a small section at a time.

Avoid Further Tearing:

  • Always pull which paper goes in the same direction that it goes through the printer so it won't break the rollers or other things inside it.

Check for Hidden Debris:

  • After you remove the paper, you can shine a flashlight to check the rollers and the path through which the paper feeds from the input toward the roller, which pulls it into the machine for smaller pieces of paper that still might be stuck inside.

Reassemble and Test:

  • After obliterating the deflector and jammed paper, assemble the printer and shut all doors tightly.
  • Restore power to the printer, then power it on and see if the error goes away. Run a test print to make sure everything works properly.

If Deflector Still Won’t Release: Other Tips
If the deflector is stuck because of the crumpled paper or a mechanical problem:

  • To relieve tension, manually rotate the deflector toward the paper feed.
  • Grasp the paper with long-nose pliers or tweezers and pull it out slowly, pressing the blue buttons as you go.
  • Do so delicately, and do not twist too hard, as you may damage any of the internal elements.

If these steps don’t fix the problem or if you suspect damage to the deflector itself or surrounding parts, take the car to a qualified technician.
