Question:
I need to replace the motor in my DTF printer, but I’m struggling to find a compatible one. I purchased a motor from AliExpress with matching model numbers, but it’s different from the original. The new motor overheats and I’m concerned it will damage the machine. Could you help me understand what to look for in a replacement motor?

Steps to Choose the Right Motor for Your DTF Printer
Replacing a motor in a DTF printer, especially models like the Epson 1390 or L1800, involves careful consideration of both the motor model and the accompanying gear system. Here’s how to approach it:-
Selecting the Correct Motor Model
- The motor you need for your DTF printer is typically an RS455 motor. Compatible models include:
- RS455-ST 71/18125 DV
- RS455-ST 19125
- RS455-ST 18130
- RS455-ST 18140
- The 19125 model is the most reliable, though it can be challenging to source. Avoid models like 15205, which have been reported to overheat and burn out quickly.

Avoid Overheating Issues
- Overheating often occurs when the motor does not match the printer’s requirements correctly. Ensure the replacement motor is specifically designed for your printer model. AliExpress motors are usually retrofitted, and their modifications may result in performance issues like overheating.
-
Gear Teeth Compatibility
- Once you have the correct motor, gear teeth are the next critical factor. The gear teeth on the pulley ensure the drive belt doesn’t slip, providing precise synchronization between the motor and the printer components.
- Some AliExpress motors have pulleys with more prominent teeth, which can shred the drive belt within weeks. For now, you’ll need to source pulleys carefully. We’re working on developing our replacement pulleys, which will provide better reliability.
-
Identifying Fake or Faulty Motors
- Please be careful when you purchase from online marketplaces. For instance, a motor listed at 6:07 in one of my videos turned out to be a fake. The customer who bought it reported that it only lasted a week.
Additional Considerations
-
Belt Discoloration:
The drive belt for the Epson 1390 and L1800 is the same. If you notice discolouration on older models like 1390, it’s simply due to age and does not affect functionality. -
Double-Ring Thickness:
The double-ring mechanism on specific motors can also vary in some cases. To clarify, the outer ring should be thicker than the inner ring. Motors with thicker inner rings are generally incompatible.
Next Steps
Suppose you need help finding the correct motor and pulley combination. In that case, I recommend continuing to search for the compatible RS455-ST 19125 model while ensuring the gear teeth and pulley match your printer’s requirements. In the meantime, stay tuned for updates on our custom replacement pulleys, which we’ll release soon to resolve this common problem.Important Note:
