Question:
I purchased an Epson ET-8550 in May 2024, and due to life circumstances, I converted it to DTF. After using it for the first time last week, it displayed error code 31006, which some call the "code of death." This was incredibly disheartening as the printer stopped working altogether. I borrowed money to purchase a second ET-8550 the next day, converted it two days ago, and so far, it’s been working fine. Additionally, I bought two bottles of wetting solution but don’t know how to use them. Do I need another system to draw the solution mixed with distilled water into the printer, or can I add a drop every night or every other night and run a cleaning cycle to absorb it into the waste tank?
Answer:
Thank you for reaching out to us and sharing your story. Kudos to your will that you are trying to keep your printing business running amidst all the challenges. Sorry for the long wait, but I know you might not have the time to read a long description, and I want an easy and reasonable explanation for your issue. We hope you stick around as we grow BCH Technologies (https://youtube.com/@bchtechnologies). We work to perfect our skills and resources -- inspired by your feedback. Let’s break down your questions one by one.
How to Understand Error Code 31006
If the printhead becomes flooded, overheating will be determined by the mainboard damaging its components, and an error code 31006 can frequently happen. When it comes to a DTF conversion, that might make things worse if the bleed isn't managed right; improper cleaning cycles can also factor into this. So when the mainboard gets damaged, it costs quite a bit to repair. If you decide to fix it, shipping the printer with installed ink is not recommended because of the risk of spillage. Here’s what you can do:
- Collect the Ink: It can be removed from the tanks and printhead in a syringe or a vacuum pump, reducing the chance of spillage when in transit.
- Prepare for Repairs: Pack the printer safely and ensure the printhead and tanks are sealed to prevent ink leakage.
How to maintain your second ET-8550
To maintain your secondary printer:
Cleaning with a Wetting Solution Regularly:
- BCH Technologies’ wetting solution is highly concentrated and must be diluted heavily. Before the application, a distilled water mix ratio must be specified.
- Please don't leave the solution in the printer for too long. Instead, put a drop on the printhead, run a cleaning cycle, and let it into the waste tank.
Printing Habits:
- Use the printer regularly to keep the ink and printer head flowing and prevent clogs.
- If the printer is not heavily used, test patterns or small jobs daily.
Consider CISS Installation:
- A Continuous Ink Supply System (CISS) is a great way to simplify ink management and keep the ink flowing smoothly. If you can't install it yourself, BCH Technologies may be able to help out when slots become available in our repair schedule.
Starting with DTF Printing
DTF printing is all about patience and precision. Due to the costs and risks involved with maintaining a DTF setup, most will find it easier to source pre-printed transfers from marketplaces like Etsy initially. DTF printing costs about $1.50 per square foot for materials and wear-and-tear, but it is worth only for bulk pieces. Pre-printed transfers are a little more expensive but can save you so much time in your startup.
