At BCH Technologies, we offer top-tier services for converting Epson printers for Direct-to-Film (DTF) printing. While most of our conversions run smoothly, we occasionally encounter situations where a customer faces difficulties post-conversion. One such customer recently shared their experience with us, providing valuable insights into the realities of DTF printing and our support.
Customer Experience with an Epson XP-15000 Conversion
A customer sent their Epson XP-15000 printer to us for a DTF conversion with the primary goal of waterproofing key components, such as the printhead and mainboard. Here's a summary of their journey:
Upon receiving the modified printer, the customer purchased Cadlink software and began the DTF printing process. Unfortunately, their first experience included an external waste tank leak during head cleaning, which created a mess inside and outside the printer. After addressing this issue, they installed chipless ink cartridges but faced additional challenges with a clogged printhead.
Several cleaning attempts allowed two colors to print, but persistent paper jam errors appeared. With the help of a YouTube tutorial, the customer bypassed the sensor and resolved these jams. However, when they returned to the printer after 17 hours, they encountered error code 031005, leaving the printer inoperable.
The customer believed these problems stemmed from inadequate waterproofing by BCH despite their efforts to follow guidance on maintenance.
Our Response and Commitment to Customer Support
At BCH Technologies, we take all customer concerns seriously and strive to provide detailed feedback. Here's how we responded to the issues raised by this customer:
We confirmed that the requested tasks were completed and tested: converting the printer to chipless, relocating the CSIC board to prevent ink damage, and waterproofing the printhead. The printer was functioning well with dye ink before being returned to the customer, ensuring it was ready for DTF ink.
Ink Cartridge Recommendations:
One of the primary challenges this customer faced was ink flow. They used third-party cartridges with sponges, which often present difficulties with DTF inks due to the sponge's interference. We recommended switching to spongeless Epson OEM cartridges, which provide a better flow, especially for white ink. A clogged printhead isn't always the root issue for intermittent color on film, especially the printer already tested to be clog free—inadequate ink flow due to third-party cartridges can cause similar symptoms. Switching cartridges may have prevented many of the problems faced during printing.
Cleaning Cycles & Potential Damage:
To resolve the clogging, the customer attempted frequent cleaning cycles, including power cleanings. While cleaning cycles are a common troubleshooting method, we always advise against overuse—especially power cleanings. Epson recommends waiting at least 12 hours between power cleanings to avoid damaging the printhead. Unfortunately, even if this guideline is followed, there is still a risk of damage. In this case, despite the customer's belief that extending the window to 18 hours would be safe, the following damage suggests otherwise.
Leak and Error Code 031005:
The internal leak this customer experienced likely stemmed from the cleaning process, which the waterproofing could not prevent. While our waterproofing protects the critical components from ink spills, the power cleaning might have caused excess ink pressure, leading to the leak and, eventually, the error code.
We understand how frustrating it is when a printer becomes inoperable, and we regret that our customers' issues weren't resolved to their satisfaction. However, we remain dedicated to providing support. We tried to offer solutions through multiple email exchanges and suggestions, including referrals to specialized online groups for additional troubleshooting advice.

While this situation didn't reach the desired outcome, it is a learning opportunity for all involved. At BCH Technologies, we stand behind the quality of our work and continue to assist our customers in finding solutions, even when things don't go as planned.
