XP-7100 Scanner & ADF
Today we’ll be going over how to replace an Epson Expression Premium printer’s scanner unit. If your printer says you have a scanner error, but you don’t have the time or don’t want to put forth the effort to disassemble and troubleshoot it, you can replace it instead. You can find the part on my website or by clicking here.
The first thing I like to do when replacing this part is to tape the top cover so that it all moves as one piece. You’ll notice a button on the forward right corner of the printer. You can't lift the bottom part of the scanner unless this button is compressed. So I press this button and lift it, then tape the top and bottom scanner together so that they are temporarily one piece.
Now we’re going to go to the back of the printer. There should be a screw on the left side that we will remove. Pull the cover toward the back, and it should come off. To put it back, hook the bottom in (you should see a hook to do this with), press the top in, and then slide it into place.
Underneath this cover, you’ll see that there are a lot of wires. Almost all of these are connected to the same piece of circuit board. Let’s remove the two ground wires first. Remove the screws keeping the circuit board in place and locate the black wirehead with three outgoing wires. You should also see a white head with three wires coming from it. Unplug all of the worse, taking special note of where you’ll have to plug them back into.
On the top, they have a four-wire connection and a two-wire connection. You can’t mix them up. It’s also important to note that you have two ground wires, so you’ll screw both of them into the same slot.
The scanner also has two FFC cables. The smaller and bigger ones go to the scanner. The medium one goes to the circuit board. Keep the middle one attached and remove the other two.
Once all the wires are detached, use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the two screws from the top. Open and close the unit a few times, and it should come off easily. Now you’ll be able to pull the wires out and remove the whole unit.
To put it back, remember that the hinge has a 45-degree angle. Make sure you pay attention to both hinges and fit them properly into the two slots.
