Troubleshooting the Epson 8550 Paper Jam Issue

Question:

I recently purchased an Epson 8550, and during its initial setup, it displayed a "paper jam" error without ever having paper loaded. Could remnants from factory testing be causing this, or is there another explanation? Is this issue fixable, and do you have any suggestions?

Thank you for reaching out with your question, Karen. Regarding your Epson 8550 issue, it sounds like you're encountering what is known as a false paper jam, which can be triggered by several factors. Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can take:

  1. Clear Tube Guard Check: Ensure the clear tube guard that holds the ink tubes is correctly installed and not interfering with any part of the printer. This piece is very flimsy. You will find it broke easily for DTF printing. For longer term solution, you can opt to install a drag chain system.
  2. Duplexer Functionality: Verify that the duplexer is functional and not contributing to the error.
  3. Printhead Carriage Movement: Manually move the printhead carriage from left to right to ensure it's not obstructed and can reach both ends of the printer.
  4. Alignment of APG System: The ET-8550 features a staged APG (Automatic Paper Grade) system which must be correctly aligned to function without issues. You can move the carriage return all the way to the right, and restart the printer on this location.
  5. Paper Feed Gear Alignment: Check the paper feed gear. It may have slipped to the right side, misaligning with the corresponding gear on the left. You can adjust this by gently pushing it towards the left with a screwdriver. See picture below:

These steps address the most common causes of false paper jams. If these suggestions do not resolve the issue, it may indeed be a more severe hardware malfunction as Epson suggested, and it might be best to return the printer for repairs or a replacement.
