1. Evaluating the Condition of Your FFC Cable
If you've decided to dive into the world of printer maintenance and repair, you'll need to become familiar with various components, such as the Flat Flexible Cable (FFC). Today, we focus on the Epson ET-8550 EcoTank and its FFC cables. The first step involves evaluating the condition of your existing cable. The burnout of one end might signify the need for a new cable. To facilitate this process, we've created an easy-to-follow video guide (link provided below) to make the steps clearer.
2. Understanding Cable Variations and Measurements
Printer parts can sometimes be challenging to decipher, but understanding the intricacies of FFC cables is crucial. The cable you get might differ in length - some may have a long and a short cable, while others come with two long ones. Typically, the long cables measure around 850 to 870 millimeters, and the short one is approximately 750 millimeters. Keep an eye out for any discrepancies in your package, especially if you end up with two short cables instead of a long one.
3. Decoding the Measurements and Bend Types
As you start to measure the FFC cable, remember that measurements commence from the wider end or the "blue wide edge." Additionally, you need to understand the different types of bends, namely, inward and outward bends. For ease of reference, the shorter cable (RT) is marked A, B, C, D, and the longer cable (LT) with 1, 2, 3. These indicate where you need to fold.
4. Implementing the Folding Process
Now that you are familiar with the cable types and bend locations, you can start the folding process. If you find the process overwhelming, you can visit BCH Technologies' website and search for "ET-8550." We've compiled a detailed worksheet with all the legends and steps you need to follow. Remember, always start with the lower cable first before moving on to the upper cable.
5. Completing the Folding Process
Follow the instructions on the worksheet for the short cable (RT), starting with the 23 millimeter outward bend, moving on to the 57 to 72 millimeter forward fold, and so on. Make sure to mark points A, B, C, and D as indicated. Once you complete this, switch to the top left cable and mirror the folds of the lower cable. You may need some rubber cement or double-sided tape to hold the cables together.
6. Pairing the Cables Together
Upon completion of the RT cable folding, turn your attention to the long cable (LT). The folding process is similar to the RT cable, and you'll need to mark their counterparts accordingly. Once both cables are folded and secured with tape, it's time to pair them together. Align the cables at the designated marks and secure them with double-sided tape.
You have now successfully completed the folding of your FFC cables for the Epson ET-8550 EcoTank. Your diligence and patience will pay off when you see the improved performance of your printer. In our next guide, we'll show you how to install these into the printer.
