Question
I watched the video about How to Refill Epson 212 Ink Cartridges and Reset Ink Levels for the WorkForce WF-2850, but I noticed there is no reset software available for the Epson XP-5100 or XP-5105 series. What happened? Why isn't there software for these models?
Answer
Why Some Epson Models Cannot Be Reset with Software
Many Epson printers track internal waste ink using a maintenance counter. When the counter reaches its limit, the printer may display errors such as:
-
Service Required
-
Waste Ink Pad Counter Overflow
-
Ink Pad is at the End of Its Service Life
In older Epson models, this counter could often be reset using software utilities such as WIC Reset Utility. However, Epson has changed the design of some newer printers.
For printers that use the T04D1 Maintenance Box, the situation is different.
The T04D1 Maintenance Box Uses a Hardware Chip
The T04D1 Maintenance Box used in printers like the XP-5100, XP-5105, and many EcoTank models contains a built-in hardware chip. This chip stores the waste-ink usage data directly on the maintenance box itself.
Because the counter is stored on the chip:
-
Software reset tools cannot overwrite the chip data
-
The printer reads the chip directly from the maintenance box
-
Once the chip reaches its limit, the printer requires replacement or chip reset
This is why no software reset tool exists for these models.
Printers That Use the T04D1 Maintenance Box
Examples of printers using this maintenance box include:
-
Epson ET-15000
-
Epson ET-3750
-
Epson ET-3760
-
Epson ET-3850
-
Epson ET-4750
-
Epson ET-4760
-
Epson ET-4850
-
Epson ET-3700
-
Epson XP-5100 / XP-5105
-
Epson ET-2860
-
Epson ET-3710
Because they rely on the T04D1 chip, the reset method is hardware-based rather than software-based.
Your Available Solutions
1. Replace the Maintenance Box
The simplest option is to replace the maintenance box with a new one:
T04D1 Maintenance Box Compatible with Epson ET-15000, ET-3750, ET-3760, ET-3850, ET-4750, ET-4760, ET-4850, ET-3700, XP-5100, ET-2860, ET-3710
Once replaced, the new chip resets the waste counter automatically.
2. Use a Hardware Chip Resetter
Some third-party tools can reset the chip on the maintenance box.
If you search for "T04D1 resetter", you may find vendors selling devices that reset the chip so the maintenance box can be reused.
These devices communicate directly with the chip rather than resetting the printer firmware.
3. Software Reset (Only for Other Models)
For printers that do not use a chip-based maintenance box, you may still reset the waste counter using a software key.
A common tool is the WIC Reset Utility, available through:
InkChip Waste Ink Counter Reset Utility (https://inkchip.net/wic)
However, again, this method does not work on printers that use the T04D1 chip system, including the XP-5100 series.
Why Epson Moved to Chip-Based Maintenance Boxes
Epson introduced chip-based maintenance boxes to:
-
Simplify servicing
-
Prevent users from resetting internal counters without replacing waste containers
-
Reduce the risk of ink overflow inside the printer
The downside is that software reset methods no longer work, but the upside is that replacing the maintenance box is quick and clean compared with older models where waste pads were buried inside the printer.
A Note About Troubleshooting Printer Errors
Addressing printer issues can be complicated due to the hands-on nature of many problems. Unfortunately, we are not able to provide remote troubleshooting, suggestions, or direct repair support for individual machines.
However, we do offer in-person diagnostic and repair services through our local facility:
BCH Technologies Printer Repair Service (https://bchtechnologies.com/printer-repair-service)
Due to high demand, repairs are handled on a first-come, first-served basis, and it may take several weeks before a printer can be scheduled for drop-off. Our services cover either full printer repairs or individual component repairs, with clear instructions for each option. That said, we understand our rates may not always be the most economical choice.
For that reason, we strongly recommend starting with self-help research online. A good place to begin is YouTube, particularly our channel homepage:
BCH Technologies YouTube Channel (https://youtube.com/@bchtechnologies)
Use the search icon next to the "About" section on the channel page to find videos about specific printer problems. I receive dozens of messages every day asking if we have a video on a certain topic. After producing hundreds of videos over the past nine years, it's difficult to remember every single one. Using YouTube's search feature is usually the fastest way to locate the right video, and the platform may also recommend helpful content from other creators.
Thanks again for reaching out and for supporting BCH Technologies. Your questions help us continue building better technical resources for the printer repair community.
