Troubleshooting Epson ET-8550 DTF Printer Errors: Solutions for Error 310002, 31006, and 31004

Question:

I have two Epson ET-8550 printers modified for DTF printing. Both had the internal tubes and ink tanks removed, replaced with a CISS system and an external waste tank. After running successfully for six months, both started experiencing problems. The first printer had a "ghost paper jam," and while trying to fix it, I cleaned the printhead and found silicone improperly positioned. After fixing that, I encountered error codes 310002 and 31006. The second printer had similar cleaning and maintenance performed, but now it gives error code 31004 and won't print. I'm considering purchasing new parts like nipples, V2 tanks, and tube chain protectors but want to know if it's worth the investment if the printheads are damaged. Also, do you offer repair services if I send the printers from California? Or do you sell pre-modified ET-8550 printers without the CISS system?

Answer:

It sounds like you’ve already put a lot of effort into maintaining your printers, and I commend you for that. Based on your description and the errors mentioned, here’s a detailed breakdown:

  • Error 310002: Typically related to ink delivery issues or problems with the printhead. After cleaning and repositioning, if this error persists, it’s usually an indication that the printhead is not able to communicate correctly with the printer's mainboard or there’s internal damage.

  • Error 31006: This error often points to a printhead initialization failure or a sensor reading error. Again, if cleaning didn’t resolve it, it suggests deeper electrical or mechanical damage inside the printhead or possibly the PW (Page Width) sensor.

  • Error 31004: In your second printer, this code generally refers to a mechanical fault or a missing printhead signal. If ink successfully reaches the end of the tubes but nothing prints and you get this error, it strongly suggests that the printhead’s nozzles are clogged beyond recovery or the printhead circuitry is damaged.

Given these facts, both of your printers most likely need new printheads. Printer #1 may also require additional repairs like replacing the PW sensor or performing an APG adjustment.

Regarding your parts purchase: buying new nipples, V2 tanks, and tube chain protectors would make sense only if your printheads are in good working condition. Otherwise, it might be wiser to first invest in diagnostics and potentially new printheads before upgrading accessory parts.

Repair Services: We absolutely offer in-person repair services through our local diagnostic facility. You can learn more about it here (https://bchtechnologies.com/printer-repair-service).

  • If you want to send the printers to us from California, we usually require you to pick them up in person after repairs.

  • However, given your situation and the fact that the printers have no ink installed (important for safe shipping), we might be able to make an exception. I can check with Abby, who leads our repair department and occasionally allows shipping after repairs, particularly for ET-8550 models.

Modified Printers: At this time, we do not sell pre-modified ET-8550 printers without the CISS system. However, if this changes, we would announce it through our YouTube channel and website, so stay tuned.

Addressing printer issues can be a complicated affair due to the hands-on nature of the problems. As a result, we aren't able to provide remote troubleshooting, suggestions, or support for printer repairs. We offer an in-person evaluation and repair service via our local diagnostic facility (https://bchtechnologies.com/printer-repair-service). Given the high demand, we operate on a first-come, first-served basis, and it might take a few weeks before we can attend to your printer. Our services are structured to either repair whole printers or specific parts, with detailed instructions provided. However, please note that our rates may not be the most budget-friendly, and we encourage exploring self-help options through online resources. We recommend starting with our YouTube channel (https://youtube.com/@bchtechnologies), using the search icon next to "About" for specific topics.

Thank you once again for reaching out and for your continued support of BCH Technologies. We look forward to assisting you further!
