Question:
After replacing the printhead on an HP OfficeJet Pro 8022, the printer carriage no longer moves into the maintenance unit. It seems to be blocked by a protruding tab. What could be causing this, and how can it be fixed?
Answer:
What's Causing the Carriage Blockage?
After a printhead replacement, it's not uncommon for the carriage to stop before entering the maintenance (capping) station. The "protruding tab" you're seeing is typically part of the capping station assembly, which is responsible for sealing the printhead when idle to prevent it from drying out.
When the printer is powered off or interrupted mid-operation, the capping station can remain in a raised position, physically blocking the carriage path. This is why the carriage can't return home.
How to Fix It
To resolve this, you'll need to manually lower the capping station:
-
Locate the tab
Look at the top-right area of the maintenance station. You should see a small plastic tab or lever. -
Press the tab inward
Gently push the tab inward. This disengages the locking mechanism holding the capping station in the raised position. -
Rotate the PF (Paper Feed) rod
While holding the tab, rotate the PF rod (this is typically a white or off-white rod connected to the gear system). Turning this rod manually will lower the capping station. -
Confirm movement
Once lowered, the protruding tab should retract, allowing the carriage to move freely into position.
Additional Tips
-
Do not force the carriage: If it feels stuck, forcing it can damage the belt or motor.
-
Check for gear misalignment: If the PF rod doesn't rotate smoothly, gears may be misaligned.
-
Inspect for obstructions: Ink buildup or debris can also prevent proper movement.
-
Power cycle carefully: After resetting the position, plug the printer back in and power it on to see if it initializes correctly.
Are There Any Error Codes?
In some cases, this issue may also trigger carriage-related errors such as:
-
Carriage Jam / Carriage Stall
-
0x6100004a or similar carriage errors
These errors typically confirm that the carriage cannot reach its home position-often due to the exact mechanical blockage you described.
